Book Hawaii s Story by Hawaii s Queen

Download or read book Hawaii s Story by Hawaii s Queen written by Liliuokalani and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen is a book written by Queen Liliuokalani, the last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. It was published in 1898, five years after the overthrow of the Kingdom. In it, Liliuokalani gives her account of her upbringing, her accession to the throne, the overthrow of her government by pro-American forces, her appeals to the United States to restore the Hawaiian monarchy, and her arrest and trial following an unsuccessful 1895 rebellion against the Republic of Hawai'i.Her appeals immediately after the Hawaiian Revolution were acted upon by her friend, President Grover Cleveland, who demanded her reinstatement from the President of Hawai'i, Sanford B. Dole, following a confidential investigation and report by James Henderson Blount submitted July 17, 1893. Dole refused Cleveland's demands. Cleveland then referred the matter to the United States Congress. The Congress investigated further and produced the Morgan Report on February 26, 1894 which concluded that the U.S. had no role in the Hawaiian Revolution. Following the Morgan Report, the Turpie Resolution of May 31, 1894 ended any hope for further assistance in regaining her throne, and her further appeals for help were rebuffed by the Cleveland administration. In 1898, the same year the book was originally published, Hawai'i was formally annexed by the United States of America. This book is seen by many in the Hawaiian sovereignty movement as a key source documenting the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. Many of her assertions regarding the overthrow are contradicted by other primary sources, including the Morgan Report and the Native Hawaiians Study Commission Report of 1983.In either case, many people believe that the work is successful in conveying the frustration and sadness by the Queen and her supporters both for her loss of the throne, as well as the end of the independent nation of Hawai'i upon annexation to the United States.

Book Hawaii s Story by Hawaii s Queen

Download or read book Hawaii s Story by Hawaii s Queen written by Liliʻuokalani and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of a Hawaiian queen living in the Victorian era is fascinating to anyone seeking rare historical pieces and materials about political leaders. It tells about Liliuokalani, the last queen of Hawaii, whose ancestors were first converts to Christianity and creators of the constitution. She lived in the turbulent times of the Victorian era, a problematic period for Hawaii and herself. Her life was full of events – from marriage and coronation to revolution and imprisonment. The book is written in the first person and claims to be a personal memoir of the real princess. It describes in detail her childhood, marriage, a world tour, acquaintance and friendship with President Cleveland and his wife, a visit to Great Britain, meetings with nobility and then the overthrow of the monarchy in Hawaii, and other political events leading to the annexation of Hawaii to the US in the late 19thcentury, which she didn't support. The book is considered an important document and one of the key historical sources for the Hawaiian sovereignty movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revolt in Paradise: The Social Revolution in Hawaii After Pearl Harbor The handful of men whose word hitherto had been almighty in Hawaii may seem to emerge out of the fol lowing pages as ogres full-blown, evil men without scruple. That is not their nature. Almost without exception, the autocrats who ruled Hawaii are men with a highly inbred sense of righteousness. They are men with too deeply in herent a conscience to depart one iota from their code. But that, precisely, was the key to their wickedness. It was this code and the ruthless manner in which they enforced it that made of Hawaii a community in chains. The code was harsh and on the surface it was outdated. At first glance it seemed to be a remnant of the fire and brimstone fervor with which the missionary forebears of these autocrats ruled the Islands after their arrival in 1820. Missionary descendants kept their tight grip on the island community because they had discovered it was something worth holding on to. Destiny had passed their role 'onto them, and their task was a holy one which kept them tremendously rich. Download or read book Autobiography of Protest in Hawaii written by Robert H. Mast and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiography of Protest in Hawai‘i explores the state's social and economic fabric through the comments of 35 progressive activists. The activists, ranging in age from the mid-30s to the late 70s, comment on their involvement on issues such as housing, labor, land use, poverty, environment, sexual harassment, seniors, and sovereignty. Almost one-half are women and there is an even split between those born in Hawai‘i and those born elsewhere. The book begins with an overview of political activism in Hawai‘i, and then records the oral history of the individual activists. Each was asked to respond to factors that shaped their moral and political lives. They were invited to explore the forces and events in their past that led them to take on an activist role. The activists were also asked to provide personal assessments of insights gained from their experiences and how they can be applied today, their analysis of Hawai‘i at that time, and some speculation on Hawai‘i's future. The result is a book that produces some very interesting and controversial viewpoints on Hawai‘i's political socialization and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Osorio investigates the effects of Western law on the national identity of Native Hawaiians in this impressive political history of the Kingdom of Hawaii from the onset of constitutional government in 1840 to the Bayonet Constitution of 1887, which effectively placed political power in the kingdom in the hands of white businessmen. Making extensive use of legislative texts, contemporary newspapers, and important works by Hawaiian historians and others, Osorio plots the course of events that transformed Hawaii from a traditional subsistence economy to a modern nation, taking into account the many individuals nearly forgotten by history who wrestled with each new political and social change. A final poignant chapter links past events with the struggle for Hawaiian sovereignty today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A confidant of Governor John Burns, a member of the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of Honolulu, a business associate of developer and financier Chinn Ho, a trustee of the Bishop Estate - Matsuo Takabuki has been at the heart of many of the sweeping social, financial, and political changes that have fundamentally altered Hawaii in the last half century. An Unlikely Revolutionary is Takabuki's own story, told in his characteristically straightforward manner, of his life and work as one of the "movers and shakers" behind Hawaii's transformation from an isolated, agriculture-based territory to a highly diverse, competitive modern community. In September, An Unlikely Revolutionary was featured on the front page of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
