Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Court of England, Vol. 2 of 3: The Pretenders and Their Adherents On the part of the adherents Of the Stuarts there was certainly no slight ground for fearing that the example set by the Presbyterian clergy in Edinburgh might produce a disagreeable effect on the minds of their respective congregations. NO one, indeed, knew better than Charles himself that the battle which he had to fight, both in Scot land and England, was not so much against the military legions of the house of Hanover as against the prejudices which attached to his cause from the recollection of the overweening bigotry of his grandfather, James the Second, to whom, when compared with his Object of enslaving the religious principles of his subjects, the loss Of three crowns had appeared light in the scale. In Scotland, more especially, the name Of James the Second, ever Since the revolution of 1688, had invariably been denounced from the pulpit as the bugbear of Protestantism; and therefore it is not to be wondered at that his descendants, who unfortu nately inherited from him the same religious prin ciples, should have shared the stigma which had SO long attached itself to the dreaded bigotry Of their predecessor. As regarded Henrietta herself, she took no pains to disguise her partiality for the Prince: the state of her feelings, however, will be best discovered by the following romantic incident, as related by Lord Kensington in one of his letters to Charles. The Princess, it seems, had conceived a passionate longing to obtain a sight of a miniature of Charles, which Lord Kensington was in the habit of wearing round his neck for though others, writes the ambassador, as the Queen and Princesses, would Open it, and consider it, the which ever brought forth admira tion from them, yet durst not this poor young lady look any otherwise on it than afar off, whose heart was nearer unto it than any of the others who did most gaze upon it. Accordingly, immediately after the acces sion of William, he was advanced to a higher rank in his profession; he was entrusted with the Office of remodelling the army, and of reducing some of the newly raised regiments; was sworn of the Privy Council, and appointed a gentleman of the bed chamber. On the 9th Of April, the same year he was created Earl of Marlborough, and shortly afterward was sent to Holland, in command Of the English forces intended to serve in the army of the allies under the Prince of Waldeck. Marlborough arrived at Rotterdam in the month of May, and in August following was present at the battle of Walcourt, where the English troops distinguished themselves in a very creditable man ner by their personal gallantry. It was on this occasion that the Prince of Waldeck, while com mending Lord Marlborough's conduct to King William, observed, I have seen more of the art of war in a day than some generals in many years.
