Dear Sir, I return the pamphlet with many thanks for the perusal of it. With heartfelt regret, I join with all the citizens of Washington in bidding you farewell. Mrs. Law unites with me in wishing you health and as much happiness as this life can afford. In most countries, those who leave the public treasury in a good state, have their own finances made flourishing also, but with you the " metu conscia recti" is the sole reward. I remain, with unfeigned esteem, respect, and regard, THOS. LAW. TO MRS. WOLCOTT. Washington, January 31, 1801. ' The Report of the Committee on my letter was unanimously agreed to and is entirely satisfactory. I have been treated with attention by the citizens and members of Congress. God be praised that my sincere exertions for the public good have not, as has sometimes happened to others, been ungratefully requited. The stereotyped charges of defalcations and frauds in the public affairs with which that infamous organ of the Jefferson party, the Aurora, and the other Jacobin presses teemed, received a momentary stimulus from two occurrences of this winter. Fires successively took place in the buildings occupied by the War and Treasury Departments; in the former on the 8th day of November, in the latter on the 20th of January. Furious attacks were at once made upon the federal officers, of which Wolcott received his full proportion. He had been present at the fire in the War Department, and had recommended that the room to which it was at first confined, should not be opened until the arrival of assistance; advice, the neglect of which ensured the destruction of the building. He had also been present at that in the Treasury, and Mr. Dexter, the Secretary, being...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Administrations of Washington and John Adams, Vol. 1 of 2: Edited From the Papers of Oliver Wolcott, Secretary of the Treasury No writer probably ever escaped criticism by depre cating it. Least of all can one claim an exemption who has awakened anew, quarrels which, if not forgotten, have been suffered to slumber, and renewed a war fare which had slackened in its animosity. The editor of these volumes certainly can claim no favour as a right, and solicits none in mercy. He has ventured to put his case on the merits and must stand or fall by them. Book John Adams Slavery and Race

Download or read book John Adams Slavery and Race written by Arthur Scherr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing the first full investigation of second U.S. president John Adams' attitudes toward slavery, blacks, and the Haitian Revolution, this iconoclastic study illuminates the inner and outer worlds of Adams for scholars and general readers. John Adams was a Founding Father of the United States who not only played a key role in laying the foundation of the nation but is also highly regarded as a great speaker, thinker, lawyer, revolutionary, diplomat, vice president, and president. But was Adams an opponent of slavery and a believer in racial equality? The historical evidence points to the contrary. This book is the first to discuss at any length John Adams's views on race, slavery, and slavery extension by examining his writings, politics, and diplomacy. Historian Arthur Scherr, an expert who is uniquely knowledgeable about Adams's views on slavery, race, and the Haitian Revolution, reveals Adams's attitudes toward slavery and race in and out of office, spotlighting his views on slavery during the American Revolution, his perspective regarding race as vice president and president of the United States, and his opinions in retirement. Readers will be able to form their opinions based on factual documentation of Adams's statements and actions regarding the key events involving slavery and race during this period: the gradual emancipation of slaves; U.S. aid to Haiti, the only black-governed nation in the world, and to its Governor-General Toussaint Louverture in gaining its independence; and the U.S. government's decision to permit slavery in new states and territories formed from public lands such as the Old Northwest and the Louisiana Purchase.

Book John Adams

Download or read book John Adams written by John Ferling and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Ferling has nearly forty years of experience as a historian of early America. The author of acclaimed histories such as A Leap into the Dark and Almost a Miracle, he has appeared on many TV and film documentaries on this pivotal period of our history. In John Adams: A Life, Ferling offers a compelling portrait of one of the giants of the Revolutionary era. Drawing on extensive research, Ferling depicts a reluctant revolutionary, a leader who was deeply troubled by the warfare that he helped to make, and a fiercely independent statesman. The book brings to life an exciting time, an age in which Adams played an important political and intellectual role. Indeed, few were more instrumental in making American independence a reality. He performed yeoman's service in the Continental Congress during the revolution and was a key figure in negotiating the treaty that brought peace following the long War of Independence. He held the highest office in the land and as president he courageously chose to pursue a course that he thought best for the nation, though it was fraught with personal political dangers. Adams emerges here a man full of contradictions. He could be petty and jealous, but also meditative, insightful, and provocative. In private and with friends he could be engagingly witty. He was terribly self-centered, but in his relationship with his wife and children his shortcomings were tempered by a deep, abiding love. John Ferling's masterful John Adams: A Life is a singular biography of the man who succeeded George Washington in the presidency and shepherded the fragile new nation through the most dangerous of times.

Book The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted

Download or read book The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted written by Frederick Law Olmsted and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers document the personal and professional life of the foremost landscape architect in American history. Frederick Law Olmsted relocated from New York to the Boston area in the early 1880s. With the help of his stepson and partner, John Charles Olmsted, his professional office grew to become the first of its kind: a modern landscape architecture practice with park, subdivision, campus, residential, and other landscape design projects throughout the country. During the period covered in this volume, Olmsted and his partners, apprentices, and staff designed the exceptional park system of Boston and Brookline—including the Back Bay Fens, Franklin Park, and the Muddy River Improvement. Olmsted also designed parks for New York City, Rochester, Buffalo, and Detroit and created his most significant campus plans for Stanford University and the Lawrenceville School. The grounds of the U.S. Capitol were completed with the addition of the grand marble terraces that he designed as the transition to his surrounding landscape. Many of Olmsted’s most important private commissions belong to these years. He began his work at Biltmore, the vast estate of George Washington Vanderbilt, and designed Rough Point at Newport, Rhode Island, and several other estates for members of the Vanderbilt family. Olmsted wrote more frequently on the subject of landscape design during these years than in any comparable period. He would never provide a definitive treatise or textbook on landscape architecture, but the articles presented in this volume contain some of his most mature and powerful statements on the practice of landscape architecture.
