Book Memoirs of Stephan Geese

Download or read book Memoirs of Stephan Geese written by Stephan Geese and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an adage celebrated in many patriotic songs that defines the homeland the place where you were born, which always will have a special place in your heart and that you will revere as long as you live. No matter what circumstances separated you from your birthplace, whether because your homeland was lost to the victor of a war, forcing natives to flee and live as tolerated refugees in exile or you left it voluntarily, in search of a better life. Finding a substitute that can fully replace the lost homeland is not easy, it is very often impossible. This book recounts the turbulent and dramatic life of the author in search of a new homeland. It ended in Miami, where an officer of the US Immigration and Naturalization Services greeted him with a warm “Welcome to America” and he felt, he finally arrived home, where he belonged, in the land of the free, the land that he learned to love, and his new homeland. Sometimes he is visiting his native homeland using Google Earth, to find it foreign, strange, and very distant in his memory.

Book excerpt: In the autumn of 2018 Stephen Rutt and his partner moved to a house near the Solway Firth in Dumfries. As they settled into their new home thousands of pink-footed geese were arriving on the Firth from the Arctic Circle to make it their winter home. The arrival of huge flocks of geese in the UK is one of the most evocative and powerful harbingers of winter; a vast natural phenomenon to capture the imagination. And so begins an extraordinary odyssey. From his new home in the north to further afield in wide open spaces of the south, Stephen traces the lives and habits of five of the most common species of goose in the UK. With an expert eye and clear, elegant prose he paints perfect portraits of these large, startling, garrulous and cooperative birds. But this is also a compact and beautifully written study of the place the goose has in our culture, our history and, occasionally, on our festive table. A vivid tour of the inbetween landscapes they inhabit and a celebration of the short days, varied weathers and long nights of the season during which we share our home with these birds.

Book excerpt: An intimate and inspirational exploration of Stephen Hawking--the man, the friend, and the physicist. Stephen Hawking was one of the most famous and influential physicists in the world. He left a mark in our culture that touched the lives of millions. His books have inspired countless scientists-to-be, and his research on the laws of black holes and the origin of the universe charted new territory. Recalling his nearly two-decades as a friend and collaborator with Stephen Hawking, Leonard Mlodinow brings a complex man into focus like no one has before. He introduces us to Hawking the colleague, for whom no detail is too minor to get right, a challenge for a man who could only type one word per minute. We meet Hawking the friend, who creates such strong connections with those around him that he can communicate powerfully with just the raise of an eyebrow. We witness Hawking the genius, who, against all odds, flourishes after he is diagnosed with ALS and pours his mind into uncovering the mysteries of the universe. Brilliant, impish, and kind, Hawking endeared himself to almost everyone he came into contact with. This beautiful portrait is inpirational and is sure to stick with you long after you've read it.

Book The Dangerous Animals Club

Download or read book The Dangerous Animals Club written by Stephen Tobolowsky and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From legendary character actor Stephen Tobolowsky, comes a collection of memoiristic pieces about life, love, acting, and adventure, told with a beguiling voice and an uncommon talent for storytelling. The Dangerous Animals Club by Stephen Tobolowsky is a series of stories that form a non-linear autobiography. Each story stands on its own, and yet there are larger interconnecting narratives that weave together from the book's beginning to end. The stories have heroics and embarrassments, riotous humor and pathos, characters that range from Bubbles the Pigmy Hippo to Stephen's unforgettable mother, and scenes that include coke-fueled parties, Hollywood sets, French trains, and hospital rooms. Told in a vivid, honest, and wondrous voice, Tobolowsky manages to render the majestic out of the seemingly mundane, profundity from the patently absurd, and grace from tragedy. This book marks the debut of a massively talented storyteller.
