A child most infantine, Yet wandering far beyond that innocent age, In all but its sweet looks and mien divine; Even then, methought, with the world's tyrant rage A patient warfare thy young heart did wage, When those soft eyes of scarcely conscious thought Some tale, or thine own fancies, would engage To overflow with tears, or converse fraught With passion o'er their depths its fleeting light had wrought." Shelley "And I smiled, as one never smiles but once; Then first discovering my own aim's extent' Which sought to comprehend the works of God, And God himself, and all God's intercourse With the human mind." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Margaret Fuller Ossoli, Vol. 1 I did not then, nor do I new, find any beauty in these 'ceremonies. What had they to do with the sweet play ful child? Her life and death were alike beautiful, but 'all this sad parade was not. Thus my first experience Of life was one of death. She who would have been the 'companion of my life was severed from me, and I was 'left alone. This has made a vast difference in my lot. 'her character, if that fair face promised right, would 'have been soft, graceful and lively; it would have tem pered mine to a gentler and more gradual course. Excerpt: ...I summoned the elder girls, who have been my 'especial charge. I reminded them of the ignorance in 'which some of them were found, and showed them 'how all my efforts had necessarily been directed to 'stimulating their minds, --leaving undone much which, 'under other circumstances, would have been deemed 'indispensable. I thanked them for the favorable opin'ion of my government which they had so generally 'expressed, but specified three instances in which I had 'been unjust. I thanked them, also, for the moral 'beauty of their conduct, bore witness that an appeal to 'conscience had never failed, and told them of my hap'piness in having the faith thus confirmed, that young 'persons can be best guided by addressing their highest 'nature. I declared my consciousness of having com'bined, not only in speech but in heart, tolerance and 'delicate regard for the convictions of their parents, with 'fidelity to my own, frankly uttered. I assured them of ' my true friendship, proved by my never having cajoled 'or caressed them into good. Every word of praise had 'been earned; all my influence over them was rooted 'in reality; I had never softened nor palliated their 'faults; I had appealed, not to their weakness, but to 'their strength; I had offered to them, always, the lofti'est motives, and had made every other end subordinate 'to that of spiritual growth. With a heartfelt blessing, 'I dismissed them; but none stirred, and we all sat for ' some moments, weeping. Then I went round the circle 'and bade each, separately, farewell.' PERSONS. Book excerpt: The award-winning author of The Peabody Sisters takes a fresh look at the trailblazing life of a great American heroine Thoreau s first editor, Emerson s close friend, the first female war correspondent, and a passionate advocate of personal liberation and political freedom. "Megan Marshall's brilliant Margaret Fuller brings us as close as we are ever likely to get to this astonishing creature. She rushes out at us from her nineteenth century, always several steps ahead, inspiring, heartbreaking, magnificent." Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, author of Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity "Megan Marshall gives new meaning to close reading from words on a page she conjures a fantastically rich inner life, a meld of body, mind, and soul. Drawing on the letters and diaries of Margaret Fuller and her circle, she has brought us a brave, visionary, sensual, tough-minded intellectual, a first woman who was unique yet stood for all women. A masterful achievement by a great American writer and scholar. Evan Thomas, author of Ike s Bluff: President Eisenhower s Secret Battle to Save the World "Megan Marshall s Margaret Fuller: A New American Life is the best single volume ever written on Fuller. Carefully researched and beautifully composed, the book brings Fuller back to life in all her intellectual vivacity and emotional intensity. Marshall s Fuller overwhelms the reader, just as Fuller herself overwhelmed everyone she met. A masterpiece of empathetic biography, this is the book Fuller herself would have wanted. You will not be able to put it down." Robert D. Richardson, author of Emerson: The Mind on Fire Praise for The Peabody Sisters: Three Women Who Ignited American Romanticism A stunning work of biography and intellectual history. Deftly weaving material from the letters and journals of all three sisters, Ms. Marshall . . . performs the intellectual equivalent of a triple axel. William Grimes, New York Times This beautifully written book is at once an intimate portrait of three remarkable sisters and a study of women s place in the vibrant intellectual and literary culture of nineteenth-century New England. The product of twenty years of research, Megan Marshall s tour de force is impossible to put down. Drew Gilpin Faust, author of The Republic of Suffering "
