Book excerpt: Out of Print for Over 150 Years. Howard's Memoirs of Sir Sidney Smith Who was the greatest British admiral of the Napoleonic Era? Horatio Nelson? Perhaps. But, great as Nelson was, a strong case could be made that Sir Sidney Smith was at least his equal. His exploits were every bit as daring as those of Nelson, and in some ways he accomplished even more. But Nelson got the "good press" and Smith did not, and does not even today. In 1793, during the retreat from Toulon, Smith destroyed more French ships than had been destroyed in any British fleet action prior to that. Yet, he was blamed by Nelson and Collingwood (neither of whom were there) for not destroying more. The first person to defeat Napoleon on land-head-to-head-was not Wellington; it was Smith at the Battle of Acre. Everyone knows about Nelson at Trafalgar; but few people realize that there would probably have been no Trafalgar if Smith had not stopped Napoleon in the east. In 1839, Edward Howard, a writing colleague of Frederick Marryat, wrote the first of two seminal biographies that have appeared of Sir Sidney Smith. It was the only one seen and approved by Smith prior to his death. This valuable source document is reprinted here in it's entirety. A portion of the sale of this book is being donated to The 1805 Club for the maintenance of Sir Sidney Smith's tomb in the Pere LaChase Cemetary in Paris. Download or read book The Dieppe Raid written by Robin Neillands and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1942, a full two years before D-Day, thousands of men, mostly Canadian troops eager for their first taste of battle, were sent across the Channel in a raid on the French port town of Dieppe. Air supremacy was not secured; the topography of the town and its surroundings - hemmed in by tall cliffs and steep beaches - meant any invasion was improbably difficult; the result was carnage, the beaches turned into killing grounds even as the men came ashore, and whole regiments literally decimated. Why was the Raid ever mounted? Was the whole thing even, as has been darkly alleged, expected and even intended to fail, a cynical conspiracy to prove to the Americans, at the expense of so many Canadian lives, the impracticability of staging the Normandy landings for another two years? Robin Neillands goes behind the myths to tell what really happened, and why.

Book excerpt: Written by award-winning African novelist Mariama Bâ and translated from the original French, So Long a Letter has been recognized as one of Africa’s 100 Best Books of the 20th Century. The brief narrative, written as an extended letter, is a sequence of reminiscences —some wistful, some bitter—recounted by recently widowed Senegalese schoolteacher Ramatoulaye Fall. Addressed to a lifelong friend, Aissatou, it is a record of Ramatoulaye’s emotional struggle for survival after her husband betrayed their marriage by taking a second wife. This semi-autobiographical account is a perceptive testimony to the plight of educated and articulate Muslim women. Angered by the traditions that allow polygyny, they inhabit a social milieu dominated by attitudes and values that deny them status equal to men. Ramatoulaye hopes for a world where the best of old customs and new freedom can be combined. Considered a classic of contemporary African women’s literature, So Long a Letter is a must-read for anyone interested in African literature and the passage from colonialism to modernism in a Muslim country. Winner of the prestigious Noma Award for Publishing in Africa.

Download or read book The Life and Correspondence of Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith written by John Barrow and published by . This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Britain's Most Overlooked Hero Sir Sidney Smith is perhaps the most overlooked star in the constellation of British heros. One of the reasons for this neglect is that he operated at the same time as-and was the primary rival of-Horatio Nelson. Nelson, of course, went on to immortal fame; but few people realize that Smith's accomplishments were in many ways fully the equal of Nelson's. Indeed, it can be argued that Nelson's renown was literally made possible by the exploits of Sir Sidney Smith. Barrow's life of Sir Sidney was the second volume on Smith ever compiled; but it is, by far, the most comprehensive. It is a book, however, that almost didn't get written. In 1848, Richard Bentley, a publisher, bought a collection of old manuscripts and papers and found that it contained a large quantity of material written by Sir Sidney. He called in an accomplished writer, John Barrow, to see if there was enough material to publish a biography. There wasn't. Barrow was about to give up when, by chance, he mentioned the project to his father. His father had an old acquaintance by the name of Septimius Arabin, a retired Royal Navy captain and a close friend of Sir Sidney. Barrow contacted him, and hit a gold mine. Arabin had boxes and boxes of manuscripts, letters and other documents, all given to him by Sir Sidney in his will, in case anyone should ever want to write the story of his life. He also put Barrow in contact with Smith's two brothers and other family members. The result was this book, an extraordinary account of Sidney Smith's life-as told mostly by Sir Sidney through his letters and correspondence. This book, along with Edward Howard's Memoirs of Sir Sidney Smith, form the seminal documents that have, for over 150 years, served as the factual basis for the life one of the greatest, if not the greatest, British naval hero of all time.
Download or read book The Clasp written by Sloane Crosley and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part comedy of manners, part treasure hunt, the first novel from the writer whom David Sedaris calls "perfectly, relentlessly funny" Kezia, Nathaniel, and Victor are reunited for the extravagant wedding of a college friend. Now at the tail end of their twenties, they arrive completely absorbed in their own lives—Kezia the second-in-command to a madwoman jewelry designer in Manhattan; Nathaniel the former literary cool kid, selling his wares in Hollywood; and the Eeyore-esque Victor, just fired from a middling search engine. They soon slip back into old roles: Victor loves Kezia. Kezia loves Nathaniel. Nathaniel loves Nathaniel. In the midst of all this semi-merriment, Victor passes out in the mother of the groom's bedroom. He wakes to her jovially slapping him across the face. Instead of a scolding, she offers Victor a story she's never even told her son, about a valuable necklace that disappeared during the Nazi occupation of France. And so a madcap adventure is set into motion, one that leads Victor, Kezia, and Nathaniel from Miami to New York and L.A. to Paris and across France, until they converge at the estate of Guy de Maupassant, author of the classic short story "The Necklace." Heartfelt, suspenseful, and told with Sloane Crosley's inimitable spark and wit, The Clasp is a story of friends struggling to fit together now that their lives haven't gone as planned, of how to separate the real from the fake. Such a task might be possible when it comes to precious stones, but is far more difficult to pull off with humans.
