Book The Memoirs of Sir Sidney Smith

Download or read book The Memoirs of Sir Sidney Smith written by Edward Howard and published by . This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of Print for Over 150 Years. Howard's Memoirs of Sir Sidney Smith Who was the greatest British admiral of the Napoleonic Era? Horatio Nelson? Perhaps. But, great as Nelson was, a strong case could be made that Sir Sidney Smith was at least his equal. His exploits were every bit as daring as those of Nelson, and in some ways he accomplished even more. But Nelson got the "good press" and Smith did not, and does not even today. In 1793, during the retreat from Toulon, Smith destroyed more French ships than had been destroyed in any British fleet action prior to that. Yet, he was blamed by Nelson and Collingwood (neither of whom were there) for not destroying more. The first person to defeat Napoleon on land-head-to-head-was not Wellington; it was Smith at the Battle of Acre. Everyone knows about Nelson at Trafalgar; but few people realize that there would probably have been no Trafalgar if Smith had not stopped Napoleon in the east. In 1839, Edward Howard, a writing colleague of Frederick Marryat, wrote the first of two seminal biographies that have appeared of Sir Sidney Smith. It was the only one seen and approved by Smith prior to his death. This valuable source document is reprinted here in it's entirety. A portion of the sale of this book is being donated to The 1805 Club for the maintenance of Sir Sidney Smith's tomb in the Pere LaChase Cemetary in Paris. Book A Thirst for Glory

Download or read book A Thirst for Glory written by Tom Pocock and published by Random House (UK). This book was released on 1998 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Admiral Sir Sidney Smith to think of himself as a second Nelson, and there were remarkable parallels between the two. Smith and Nelson shared the credit for changing the course of history by ending Napoleon Bonaparte's dream of eastern conquest: Nelson at the Battle of the Nile and Smith by his defence of Acre. While Nelson has become the unrivalled national hero, Smith has been almost forgotten. yet had his advice been followed, campaigns in the Middle East would have been unnecessary and thousands of lives saved. 'Tom Pocock is one of the leading naval historians, and writes with learning and great narrative elan. This is a sympathetic and hugely entertaining portrait of a figure Napoleon both admired and considered 'half mad'. 'John Adamson, SUNDAY TELEGRAPH 'When Smith died, a memorial to Nelson was being erected in Trafalgar Square. Having read Tom Pocock's fine portrait of Sidney Smith, I feel that another memorial should be erected - not as tall, perhaps, but certainly with a many lions at its base. Book The Life and Correspondence of Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith

Download or read book The Life and Correspondence of Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith written by John Barrow and published by . This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Britain's Most Overlooked Hero Sir Sidney Smith is perhaps the most overlooked star in the constellation of British heros. One of the reasons for this neglect is that he operated at the same time as-and was the primary rival of-Horatio Nelson. Nelson, of course, went on to immortal fame; but few people realize that Smith's accomplishments were in many ways fully the equal of Nelson's. Indeed, it can be argued that Nelson's renown was literally made possible by the exploits of Sir Sidney Smith. Barrow's life of Sir Sidney was the second volume on Smith ever compiled; but it is, by far, the most comprehensive. It is a book, however, that almost didn't get written. In 1848, Richard Bentley, a publisher, bought a collection of old manuscripts and papers and found that it contained a large quantity of material written by Sir Sidney. He called in an accomplished writer, John Barrow, to see if there was enough material to publish a biography. There wasn't. Barrow was about to give up when, by chance, he mentioned the project to his father. His father had an old acquaintance by the name of Septimius Arabin, a retired Royal Navy captain and a close friend of Sir Sidney. Barrow contacted him, and hit a gold mine. Arabin had boxes and boxes of manuscripts, letters and other documents, all given to him by Sir Sidney in his will, in case anyone should ever want to write the story of his life. He also put Barrow in contact with Smith's two brothers and other family members. The result was this book, an extraordinary account of Sidney Smith's life-as told mostly by Sir Sidney through his letters and correspondence. This book, along with Edward Howard's Memoirs of Sir Sidney Smith, form the seminal documents that have, for over 150 years, served as the factual basis for the life one of the greatest, if not the greatest, British naval hero of all time.

Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.
