Book Memoirs of a Middle School Teacher

Download or read book Memoirs of a Middle School Teacher written by Patricia Patrick Marr and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle-schoolers are interesting creatures. Teaching them was both challenging and fulfilling. Sixth grade, in my opinion, is the most difficult grade to teach. Too many times to count, mothers claimed that their child had never done "that" before. I learned to respond, "That's because he wasn't in the sixth grade before." As hard as it was at times, as I look back on my days in middle school, I can reminisce with a chuckle at most of their antics. Too often, though, it was I who said or did something foolish in the heat of the moment. If I had kept notes, I could have filled hundreds of pages with the comical things that happened in the middle grades. Instead, these are my memories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightfully honest and moving memoir about the realities of teaching in an inner-city school, Ed Boland "smashes the dangerous myth of the hero-teacher [and] shows us how high the stakes are for our most vulnerable students" (Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black). In a fit of idealism, Ed Boland left a twenty-year career as a non-profit executive to teach in a tough New York City public high school. But his hopes quickly collided headlong with the appalling reality of his students' lives and a hobbled education system unable to help them. Freddy runs a drug ring for his incarcerated brother; Nee-cole is homeschooled on the subway by her brilliant homeless mother; Byron's Ivy League dream is dashed because he is undocumented. In the end, Boland isn't hoisted on his students' shoulders and no one passes AP anything. This is no urban fairy tale of at-risk kids saved by a Hollywood hero, but a searing indictment of schools that claim to be progressive but still fail their students. Told with compassion, humor, and a keen eye, Boland's story is sure to ignite debate about the future of American education and attempts to reform it.

Book Memoirs of a Shop Teacher B W Version

Download or read book Memoirs of a Shop Teacher B W Version written by Stanley Sipka and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about me and my interaction with students, faculty, and everyone else. I want to move through my life from birth to the present. The 85 years of life have been eventful, and I am grateful for those who helped me arrive at this point in life. I want to convey the events that guided me through my early years, grade, high school, Army, marriage, college, teaching, and retirement. Each day was a learning experience. The goal was to make teaching more rewarding to the students. Many assignments that are included were not present when I started in 1965. My work during the summers helped me understand the innovations – NC (numerical control), CNC (computer numerical control), EDM (electric discharge machining). That learning helped me convey that knowledge to the students. Included are jobs made by the students that were designed to provide similar experiences found in the machining industry. There are stories about students and teachers that filled my days as a teacher. Lastly, there are assignments a person can try. My only comment is, “don’t do the last two because they are difficult.” That was a favorite comment to get students to work the difficult problems.

Book New Directions in Teaching Memoir

Download or read book New Directions in Teaching Memoir written by Dan Kirby and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students want to do work that's meaningful to them. As their teacher, you can support secondary writers as they learn about the writing process, but you can also offer them something greater: an opportunity to tell their own story and to mold it into an artful work of memory. When students read and write memoir, they explore their lives with pen and paper, make connections to the lives of others, and often discover something deeply personal and surprisingly universal in their writing and their lives. New Directions in Teaching Memoir demonstrates how to teach this evocative genre and shows you the power it holds for students and for instruction. More than merely personal narrative or family stories, memoir engages students because it emphasizes the importance of students own stories, feelings, and ideas. It also provides numerous opportunities for instruction in revision, editing, and craft. Dan and Dawn Latta Kirby present a unique way to introduce students to memoir and an in-depth instructional approach they have developed over time - the studio workshop. The studio approach takes the key attributes of fine-arts studio classrooms, and applies them to writing instruction to help transform your classroom into a more disciplined, guided, interactive, and authentic environment that supports risk taking for writers and gives you opportunities to coach students one-on-one. New Directions in Teaching Memoir also contains all the important tools you'll need to succeed with memoir, including: what the process of composing a memoir looks like extensive suggestions for responding to and evaluating student work, including reproducible rubrics and handouts ideas for supporting students' efforts by incorporating memoir into your literature curriculum numerous examples of student work the artistic importance of presentational features, including style and format new versions of memoir especially designed for student writers. Book excerpt: At once "a pop culture phenomenon" (Publishers Weekly) and "screamingly funny" (Booklist), Educating Esmé "should be read by anyone who's interested in the future of public education" (Boston Phoenix Literary Section). A must-read for parents, new teachers, and classroom veterans, Educating Esmé is the exuberant diary of Esmé Raji Codell’s first year teaching in a Chicago public school. Fresh-mouthed and free-spirited, the irrepressible Madame Esmé—as she prefers to be called—does the cha-cha during multiplication tables, roller-skates down the hallways, and puts on rousing performances with at-risk students in the library. Her diary opens a window into a real-life classroom from a teacher’s perspective. While battling bureaucrats, gang members, abusive parents, and her own insecurities, this gifted young woman reveals what it takes to be an exceptional teacher. Heroine to thousands of parents and educators, Esmé now shares more of her ingenious and yet down-to-earth approaches to the classroom in a supplementary guide to help new teachers hit the ground running. As relevant and iconoclastic as when it was first published, Educating Esmé is a classic, as is Madame Esmé herself.

Book Memoirs of an American Teacher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author holds a Master's degrees in Christian Education from Eden Seminary and in Nursing Education from Washington University, St. Louis. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from MacMurray College and a nursing certificate from Blessing Hospital. Awards include: Curator's Award from University of Missouri, Ford Foundation teaching internship, United States Public Health Service Grant, and academic scholarships. She has been recognized by Blessing nurses' alumni association as Nurse of the Year and inducted into her Palmyra, Missouri school district's Academic Hall of Fame. She was a missionary teacher for twenty years under the Presbyterian Church USA and vocational and program agencies. From 1974 to 1978 she was a Nursing Instructor at the University of Azarabadegan in Iran and from 1978 to 1988 she was a Christian Education Teacher at Maridi Teacher Training Institute and the first American woman to become Chair at their Department of Religion. Marjorie White, a missionary teacher for over twenty years, has written this book at the request of missionary schools who want to train educators to serve in Muslim countries. The book covers the personal perspectives and experiences in Iran during her time of service and her own perspectives on relating to those of the Muslim religion that she learned from interaction with her Muslim students, friends and co-workers. The books of Moses were the only text that she was allowed to use in her religious education classes in both Sudan and Iran and this presentation is fairly representative of what she taught. Parts of this book are devoted to her use of the new teaching technique of using literary methods to teach science and other non-literary subjects. This book is timely, as it addresses today's new interest in teaching Bible truths throughout school curriculum.

Book Losing My Faculties

Download or read book Losing My Faculties written by Brendan Halpin and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his first nine years as a teacher, Brendan Halpin goes from wide-eyed idealist to cynical, heartbroken idealist. Unique among teaching memoirs, Losing My Faculties is not the story of a heroic teacher who transforms the lives of his hardbitten students; rather, it’s the inspirational and often unpretty truth about people who choose to get up ridiculously early day after day and year after year to go stand in front of teenagers. It’s also a rarely-seen, all-access view of both suburban and urban education, including the ugly truth behind the mythology at a much-hyped charter school.
