CHAPTER XXIII1 One of the most picturesque sights in the North-West of Scotland is undoubtedly the ruined castle of Ardvreck, Loch Assynt, already mentioned as associated with the capture of Montrose. Gardiner, the historian of the Commonwealth and Protectorate, concludes that there is not a shadow of evidence that the laird acted treacherously, or had done anything more than his duty to the Government of which he was a servant. 'It is unlikely that he ever conceived the idea that it was possible for him to act otherwise than he did.' After the Restoration, at the instance of the Lord Advocate, with consent of the Marquis's son, proceedings were taken against Macleod, the Laird of Assynt, who was cast into prison, where he remained for three years, until liberated in 1666 by order of Charles n. Macleod denied the facts alleged, nor was it proved that he was formerly in the service of Montrose. He grounded his defence also on the indemnity granted by the King in the year 1650. On the 8th of October 1663 the King was appealed to for his decision as to prosecuting the charge or sisting further proceedings, and three months later the laird petitioned, on the plea of ill-health, for release from confinement. He wished not to die in prison. Within Edinburgh he was allowed his liberty under a penalty of DEGREES20,000 Scots if he failed to reenter ward when required. On the soth February 1666 Macleod's case was declared to be included under the King's indemnity of 1650. On his discharge being ordered, he was set free without final trial, and thus the Laird of Assynt's guilt or innocence in regard to Montrose was judicially never proved. 1 (See pages 63-64, 206-207, of foregoing.) Book Debating the Highland Clearances

Download or read book Debating the Highland Clearances written by Eric Richards and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storm clouds always gather over the story of the Highland Clearances. The eviction of the Highlanders from the glens and straths of the Highlands and Islands of the north of Scotland still causes great historical dispute more than a century after the events. The Highland Clearances also generated a great deal of contemporary controversy and documentation. The record comes in diverse forms and with radically different provenances, offering excellent material for exercises in historical analysis and selection. Debating the Highland Clearances introduces the Highland Clearances as a classic historical problem. Eric Richards reviews the historical debate and examines the methods and sources employed by the combatants past and present. The debates among historians, novelists, politicians and economists are no less passionate today and raise major questions about interpretation and the appropriate frame of reference for the noisy and continuing public debate about the Highland Clearances. The estate was owned by the dukes of Sutherland, who were among the richest patrician landowners of the period; from the early nineteenth century, however, the family were shadowed by their reputation as great clearance landlords, something that would come back to haunt them throughout the coming decades

Book Unearthing the Past to Forge the Future

Download or read book Unearthing the Past to Forge the Future written by Tobias Wolffhardt and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the British East India Company consolidated its rule over India, evolving from a trading venture to a colonial administrative force. Yet its territorial gains far outpaced its understanding of the region and the people who lived there, and its desperate efforts to gain knowledge of the area led to the 1815 appointment of army officer Colin Mackenzie as the first Surveyor General of India. This volume carefully reconstructs the life and career of Mackenzie, showing how the massive survey of India that he undertook became one of the most spectacular and wide-ranging knowledge production initiatives in British colonial history.

Book The Life and Times of Mary Dowager Duchess of Sutherland

Download or read book The Life and Times of Mary Dowager Duchess of Sutherland written by Catherine Layton and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive biography depicts one Victorian woman’s struggle to stay afloat in a rising tide of prurient scandalmongering and snobbery. Could it be that this woman’s character and circumstances informed Oscar Wilde’s social comedies? She was the daughter of a leading Conservative Oxford don, vilified as an arrogant fortune-hunter. Her liaison dangereuse with a Duke resulted in ostracism by Queen Victoria’s cronies, as well as protracted, widely publicised legal disputes with his family. One battle put her in Holloway Gaol for six weeks. Her supporters, over time, included Disraeli, the Khedival family of Egypt, the de Lesseps, and Sir Albert Kaye Rollit (a promoter of women’s suffrage, later her third husband). Her life and that of her family drew in British and European colonialism, and even Reilly, the “Ace of Spies”. Various previously untapped letters, diaries and journals allow the reader to navigate through the sensationalist fog of the primarily Liberal press of her time. The book will appeal to anyone interested in Victorian and journalism history, and gender and celebrity studies.
