Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Life in the Saddle is an expansion on the account Rev. Davie Hogan left of his own life, which he entitled: Autobiography of David Hogan (1811-1899). The author will quote directly from this work in the following format, as in the following opening passage: I propose on this the 16th day of February A.D. 1899, in the 88th year of my life, to continue the work of writing a biographic sketch of my life, from a very imperfect, or partially kept diary. I will here state, this work is only intended as a manuscript for the information of my children, grandchildren, and those who in the future may be interested in the history this writing may afford. I have tried to keep as far from self-laudation as possible. I therefore pray that whosoever may consult or read it, if they think they see a spirit of exultation, they will account for it, on other grounds than intention of the writer. The rest of the text is comprised of quotes from other sources and background information researched and compiled by the author. Davie wrote for an audience with a base of shared experience and knowledge mostly lost to contemporary readers. The author has attempted to fill out Hogan's often terse or detail lacking account with the wealth of information on history, family members, and local color his ancestor neglected to include. By the way, the author, Brian Hogan, is Rev. Hogan's third great grandnephew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man Who Loved Souls Hidden Memoirs of a Mountain Preacher You are about to read the hidden memoirs of a mountain preacher in the early 1900's. They are his stories, written through the hands of his granddaughter many years ago and not found and published until now. Read stories of gun battles, murders, supernatural visitations by angels, healings, miracles, visions, great sacrifices, suffering and true love. Read how one man was instrumental in establishing an uncommon 80 churches in his lifetime. Don't be surprised by the poor English grammar and spelling. Why? The author says, "I'm leaving it in his own words, so you can get to know the man who lived this life in the truest sense of the word." Rev. Henry Robertson did not allow his lack of education, stature or wealth to stop him from fulfilling God's destiny for his life and he would want you to know that you have the same opportunity in your own life. He shared with several people throughout his ministry this statement, "There's a whole lot you can do for God as long as you don't care who gets the credit." This is the type of man you will read of. He was known to those around him as, 'The Man Who Loved Souls'. Certainly his stories will inspire and bring insight into how he earned this title among his peers. As you read and walk in his steps, reliving his past, you are sure to take something good from it. God has anointed every page of this book, because the price that was paid to live it was great!

Book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders

Download or read book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders written by Rimi Xhemajli and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders, Rimi Xhemajli shows how a small but passionate movement grew and shook the religious world through astonishing signs and wonders. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, early American Methodist preachers, known as circuit riders, were appointed to evangelize the American frontier by presenting an experiential gospel: one that featured extraordinary phenomena that originated from God's Spirit. In employing this evangelistic strategy of the gospel message fueled by supernatural displays, Methodism rapidly expanded. Despite beginning with only ten official circuit riders in the early 1770s, by the early 1830s, circuit riders had multiplied and caused Methodism to become the largest American denomination of its day. In investigating the significance of the supernatural in the circuit rider ministry, Xhemajli provides a new historical perspective through his eye-opening demonstration of the correlation between the supernatural and the explosive membership growth of early American Methodism, which fueled the Second Great Awakening. In doing so, he also prompts the consideration of the relevance and reproduction of such acts in the American church today.

Book Memoir of the Life and Ministry of William Bramwell

Download or read book Memoir of the Life and Ministry of William Bramwell written by James Sigston and published by Kingsley Press. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Bramwell was without doubt the most significant revivalist during the thirty years following the death of John Wesley. Thousands of ungodly men and women were swept into the kingdom of God through his ministry. He was brought up in a good Anglican home with strong morals but was deeply convicted of sin from a young age. In his late teens he was radically converted and after some misgivings joined the despised Methodists. For some time, he struggled to know whether he was called to preach, and once spent thirty-six hours in a disused sand pit pleading with God to make his will known. When once the call was made clear, he became an itinerant Methodist preacher until the day of his death. Bramwell was known above all for his intense prayer life. He rose at a very early hour to plead with God for souls, organized early morning prayer meetings in every circuit he was appointed to, and regularly held prayer times after his preaching services to help people draw closer to God. His preaching was fiery and very pointed, always aiming at the saving of souls from eternal destruction. "They are the best preachers who bring souls to God," he said, and this he did wherever he went. His Christian character was impeccable, as he was always striving to be more like his Master. He especially disliked slander and gossip, and often chose to leave the company of those who were speaking negatively of an absent person. This memoir of William Bramwell is not what might be called an "easy read," but any extra effort expended in carefully pondering its pages will be richly rewarded, and that's a promise! Pray, O pray, my brother! never, never quit your hold of the fullness of God.... I am astonished that we do not pray more, yea, that we do not live every moment as on the brink of the eternal world, and in the blessed expectation of that glorious country. -William Bramwell
