Book excerpt: The Memoirs of a Cavalier resembles Robinson Crusoe in so far as it is a tale told by a man of his own experiences and adventures. It has just the same air of truth and for a long time after its first publication in 1720 people were divided in opinion as to whether it was a book of real memoirs or not. A critical examination has shown that it is Defoe's own work. The period in which the scene is laid is that of the English Civil War, in which the Cavalier fought on the side of King Charles I against the Puritans. But his adventures in this war belong to the second part of the book. In the first part, he tells of his birth and parentage, the foreign travel which was the fashionable completion of the education of a gentleman in the seventeenth century, and his adventures as a volunteer officer in the Swedish army, where he gained the experience which was to serve him well in the Civil War at home.

The full title, which bore no date, was: Memoirs of a Cavalier; or A Military Journal of the Wars in Germany, and the Wars in England. From the Years 1632 to 1648. Written threescore years ago, by an English gentleman, who served first in the army of Gustavus Adolphus, the Glorious King of Sweden, till his death, and after that in the Royal Army of King Charles the First, from the beginning of the Rebellion to the end of the War. Winston Churchill modeled his six-volume histories The World Crisis and The Second World War on Memoirs of a Cavalier. Defoe's method "in which the author hangs the chronicle and discussion of great military and political events upon the thread of the personal experiences of an individual" suited Churchill's sprawling histories of World War I and World War II. In defending this stylistic choice, Churchill wrote, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office." (wikipedia.org)

In the following year he was again in the North, and when King Charles' s forces had been defeated at Newburn, he was sent as a messenger to negotiate a treaty. The Civil War broke out in 1642, and the Cavalier served in his father's regiment at an action with the rebels under Essex in October. A few days later he was at the battle of Edgehill (fought on Sunday, October 23rd, not 24th, as Defoe says), and he was with the king when the Royalist advance on London was stopped at Brentford. In February 1643 the Cava lier was wounded at the capture Of Cirencester by the Royalists, and in July he contributed to the defeat of Sir William Waller at Roundway Down by taking a body of horse and dragoons to the aid of Sir Wil liam Hopton.
