Book I ll Catch the Sun

Download or read book I ll Catch the Sun written by Richard Langdon Cook and published by . This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nudists are rarely asked what inspired them to be nudists in the first place. Was it something they caught on a cruise ship, or can nudism be explained away, perhaps, as a family trait like baldness or a fear of heights? In I'll Catch the Sun, author Richard Langdon Cook ponders this and other questions in a unique memoir, penned by a man who simply prefers being outside' his clothes rather than in' them. While making a compelling case for nudism, this memoir also provides a look at the author's global experiences in Cyprus, Thailand, the Seychelles, South Africa, France, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. An engaging storyteller, Cook shares his thoughts on the English, the Japanese, and offers excellent advice on what not to do in a public bathhouse in Tokyo! Woven between amusing anecdotes generated by the lifestyle are musings on the language and morality of nudism, personal relationships, the music revolution, and culinary delights prepared in the nude or otherwise. Supplemented with photographs, I'll Catch the Sun is the story of a well-traveled man who has lived a most interesting life in his pursuit of the sun.

Download or read book What Then Is Liturgy written by Anscar J. Chupungco and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Father Anscar Chupungco fondly recalls his first class as a student at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in 1965. Professor Salvatore Marsili 'famed theologian, liturgist, and cofounder of the institute 'entered the lecture hall, and after a prolonged and awkward silence finally asked, And so, what is liturgy?" This seemingly simple question underlies Chupungco's untiring love for liturgy and his lifetime of searching for answers. His is a passion deeply rooted in tradition, which is evident in this volume. Relying on Scripture, patristic writers, and conciliar and postconciliar documents 'and with great skill, prudence, and the fundamental virtue of obedience 'he carefully examines current liturgical trends that are the subject of fierce debate. At a time when we focus so intently on the debate itself, Chupungco cautions us to remember: "At the end of the day what matters are not personal opinions but what truly contributes to making the prayer of the Church an encounter with the person of Christ." It is this most sacred encounter that is at the heart of What, Then, Is Liturgy? And it is this encounter that will lead us day by day to the ultimate heavenly liturgy, our eternal and perfect offering of praise to God. Anscar Chupungco is a Benedictine of the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in Manila. He is former president of the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome, where he taught history of the liturgy and liturgical inculturation. Chupungco was Executive Secretary of the Philippine Episcopal Commission on Liturgy for eighteen years and is currently Secretary of the Asian Liturgy Forum. He has served as consultor to both the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education, was a member of the Advisory Committee of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) for ten years, and for some time served as Chair of ICEL's Translations and ReVisions Subcommittee. Chupungco edited the five-volume Handbook for Liturgical Studies and is author of Liturgical Inculturation (both published by Liturgical Press), Cultural Adaptation of the Liturgy, and Liturgies of the Future. Book Shitfaced Musings of a Former Drunk

Download or read book Shitfaced Musings of a Former Drunk written by Seamus Kirst and published by Seamus Kirst. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shitfaced: Musings of a Former Drunk, Seamus Kirst explores the milestones of self-destruction that marked his coming of age. At 13, he went to the ER for swallowing a bottle of pills. By 16, he was already a veteran of several in- and out-patient rehab programs for alcohol. As he walked across the stage at his high school graduation – just after delivering his valedictorian address – he had already been hospitalized three times for alcohol poisoning. The situation only accelerated at Brown University, where he abused a plethora of drugs, from Xanax to cocaine, while his alcohol abuse intensified. Most terrifying was his attitude toward his own dissolution, his rationalization of behaviors that brought him ever closer to death. In that sense, Shitfaced, is not just a memoir, but a dehortation for those who find themselves in the same place; Kirst goes back to find a self that he barely survived.

Book The Home Place

Download or read book The Home Place written by J. Drew Lanham and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A groundbreaking work about race and the American landscape, and a deep meditation on nature…wise and beautiful.”—Helen Macdonald, author of H is for Hawk A Foreword Reviews Best Book of the Year and Nautilus Silver Award Winner In me, there is the red of miry clay, the brown of spring floods, the gold of ripening tobacco. All of these hues are me; I am, in the deepest sense, colored. Dating back to slavery, Edgefield County, South Carolina—a place “easy to pass by on the way somewhere else”—has been home to generations of Lanhams. In The Home Place, readers meet these extraordinary people, including Drew himself, who over the course of the 1970s falls in love with the natural world around him. As his passion takes flight, however, he begins to ask what it means to be “the rare bird, the oddity.” By turns angry, funny, elegiac, and heartbreaking, The Home Place is a meditation on nature and belonging by an ornithologist and professor of ecology, at once a deeply moving memoir and riveting exploration of the contradictions of black identity in the rural South—and in America today. “When you’re done with The Home Place, it won’t be done with you. Its wonders will linger like everything luminous.”—Star Tribune “A lyrical story about the power of the wild…synthesizes his own family history, geography, nature, and race into a compelling argument for conservation and resilience.”—National Geographic
