Book Memoires of a Travelholic

Download or read book Memoires of a Travelholic written by Carole J. Kuhn and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Kuhn has written a book about her life and travels as a foreign language teacher. In essence, it is a book of memories, autobiographical in nature. She describes many of the 45 trips in detail, but she also groups many of the trips togeher. In 1973 when she began taking students to Europe, she had a good background of working with students and knowing how they think and act. (or so she thought) There is an interesting list of things to take, where to put the items, where they can be bought and the prices of the items. There is also a list of personal rules and regulations that were required of all students. They were called Mademoiselles Rules or Mlles Rules. Then there is a comprehensive list of Trip Procedures, giving all the do's and dont's of traveling. Students were allowed to "sample" beer and alcohol as long as their parents had signed a permission slip, but students will always try to outthink the teacher and circumvent the procedures. Dr. Kuhn describes many of the things that went wrong on both student trips and adult trips, along with things that didn't seem funny at the time, but in retrospect seem humorous today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joys of Travel: And Stories that Illuminate Them is a collection of Thomas Swick’s personal essays on what he has identified as “the seven joys of travel”: anticipation, movement, break from routine, novelty, discovery, emotional connection and heightened appreciation of home. The Joys of Travel awakens readers to pleasures that, as travelers, they may be taking for granted. It also shows non-travelers what they’ve been missing. It offers tips on how people can get the most out of their trips, as well as the titles of travel classics that will not only prepare them for the places they visit but make those places more meaningful once they get there. And it tells, through memories and stories, the tale of someone who has made a living writing about travel. In fact, the story of Thomas Swick’s life as a traveler neatly parallels the examination of a journey from beginning to end. Before you next trip, be it a family vacation or a backpacking tour of Europe, read The Joys of Travel. It will inspire you to get the most out of your time away from home and to get away more often.

Book excerpt: Fate Undenied' Synopsis From a young age, Jonathan Fitzgerald was groomed to become his father William's successor to lead Fitzgerald International. As an only child, Jonathan was the heir to the highly successful company. On his flight to a business conference along with his best friend Maxwell Adams, their small plane was caught in a deadly snowstorm and the two men perished in the furious blizzard. When they found themselves in the afterlife, Maxwell happily embraced his new existence, but Jonathan was not ready to surrender his humanity just yet. Going against a warning given, he somehow is able to cross the dimension back into a limbo of physical existence. But he's no longer a human being and becoming one again seemed like an impossible undertaking. Undaunted, somehow he prevails and finds a way to come back, but the perception he had of his old life is forever changed by reality. After witnessing a crime being committed, he's marked for death by the hit men who want to silence him at any cost. As he finds himself fighting to stay alive, he's forced to run in a relentless pursuit that takes him from the United States, through Europe and Central America. But just as life seemed to fall into place, he finds himself a prisoner of his own making, unable to escape the choices of his past. He came to accept that his fate couldn't be denied; at best he could circumvent the intended path, but the final destination would still be the same.

Book Tragic Shores a Memoir of Dark Travel

Download or read book Tragic Shores a Memoir of Dark Travel written by Thomas Cook and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I have come to thank dark places for the light they bring to life.' Thomas Cook has always been drawn to dark places, for the powerful emotions they evoke and for what we can learn from them. These lessons are often unexpected and sometimes profoundly intimate, but they are never straightforward. With his wife and daughter, Cook travels across the globe in search of darkness - from Lourdes to Ghana, from San Francisco to Verdun, from the monumental, mechanised horror of Auschwitz to the intimate personal grief of a shrine to dead infants in Kamukura, Japan. Along the way he reflects on what these sites may teach us, not only about human history, but about our own personal histories. During the course of a lifetime of traveling to some of earth's most tragic shores, from the leper colony on Molokai to ground zero at Hiroshima, he finds not darkness alone, but a light that can illuminate the darkness within each of us. Written in vivid prose, this is at once a personal memoir of exploration (both external and internal), and a strangely heartening look at the radiance that may be found at the very heart of darkness.

Book excerpt: Barbara Sjoholm arrived in London in the winter of 1970 at the age of twenty. Like countless young Americans in that tumultuous time, she wanted to escape a country at war and set out for Europe, where she spent the next three years living in Barcelona and London, hitchhiking around Spain, and studying at the University of Granada. Set on becoming a writer, she read everything from Colette to Borges, learned Norwegian and Spanish, and explored her sexual identity. With the ghosts of a painful childhood at her heels, she looked for a writing voice and subject matter that would reflect her emerging political and artistic vision. Incognito Street is an evocative look at an adventurous, curious young expatriate and the forces that would shape her eventual career as a writer, translator, and publisher. Sjoholm captures the flavor of a time when the feminist and lesbian movements were just beginning, seen from the perspective of a girl searching for a voice and a self to call her own.
