In this important new work, Dr. Fry discusses Dalrymple’s extensive contribution to knowledge about New Guinea and his pioneer attempt to establish a free port on Balambangan, and shows that his interest in the possibility of a North-West Passage and his influence in government circles were to be a major factor in bringing about Vancouver’s survey. Dalrymple’s research and theories about the great Southern Continent led to his appointment by the Royal Society as commander of the 1768 expedition, and though the Admiralty countermanded this decision and appointed instead Captain Cook, Dalrymple’s geographical researches were the motivating force behind the initiation of the search for Terra Australis. Dr. Fry throws interesting new light on Dalrymple’s relations with Cook, which, he argues, have been consistently misrepresented. Dalrymple became an expert navigator and surveyor during his years as captain of East India snows, and he became in turn hydrographer of the East India Company and the Admiralty. His work in this field revolutionised chart-making and was a contribution of incalculable value to Britain’s maritime supremacy in the nineteenth century. Book excerpt: The age of maritime expansion and the Anglo-Spanish War have been analyzed by generations of historians, but nearly all studies have emphasized events and participants at the top. This book examines the lives and experiences of the men of the Elizabethan maritime community during a particularly volatile period of maritime history. The seafaring community had to contend with simultaneous pressures from many different directions. Shipowners and merchants, motivated by profit, hired seamen to sail voyages of ever-increasing distances, which taxed the health and capabilities of 16th-century crews and vessels. International tensions in the last two decades of Elizabeth's reign magnified the risks to all seamen, whether in civilian employment or on warships. The advent of open warfare with Spain in 1585 resulted in a privateering war against the Spanish Empire, seen by some seamen as one of the few boons of the conflict. The other major development was the introduction of impressment, a deeply resented aspect of any naval war and one that brought great hardship to seamen and their families. The relationship between the Crown and its seafarers was a pull-haul between a state beset by financial problems of fighting a protracted war on several fronts and employees forced to work in dangerous conditions for substandard wages. The stresses of the war years tell us much about the dynamic of the maritime community, their expectations, and their coping strategies.

Separating from Wallis at the exit to the Strait of Magellan he went on to make an independent voyage which has earned him the reputation of being the ablest and most ill-fated of Cook's immediate precursors. Handicapped by a defective ship and inadequate supplies he made a spirited attempt to carry out his instructions. While Wallis was enjoying the delights of Tahiti, Carteret on a more southerly track rediscovered the long lost Spanish discoveries of Santa Cruz and the Solomon Islands, and then became involved in a bitter dispute with the Dutch in Celebes which almost ended in open warfare. This edition presents the first full account of the voyage. It is based on Carteret's own manuscript Journals including one which Carteret wrote with a view to publication to correct the misrepresentation of John Hawkesworth's Voyages (1773). Supplemented by letters and other documents from English and Dutch archives, these manuscripts throw light on various controversial topics, such as the conduct of Wallis and the Admiralty, the Patagonian giants, Carteret's quarrel with the Dutch, and the rights and wrongs in the dispute following the publication of Voyages. Maps drawn on the voyage are reproduced. The main pagination of this and the following volume (Second Series 125) is continuous. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1965.
