Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Sir Charles Reed In using the materials that were available, the writer has endeavoured to follow two prin ciples - the one, to restrict himself to matters of general, as distinguished from family, interest; and the other, to dwell only on what was in some degree characteristic. While, therefore, the public movements in which Sir Charles took part could not be passed by, they are introduced only as a background, and with a View to make his figure stand forth more clearly on the canvas. SCHOOL BOARD FOR LONDON. Statement made by Sib Charles Seed, M.P., Chairman, on the reassembling of the Board, ZOth September, 1880. Ladies And Gentlemen, No work can be fairly judged in its commencement. Hence, to those who were eager nnt of for results in the very spring-time of Soard' autory. our operations, we said, "Wait until our work is fairly established, and has had time to tell; give us ten years, and then we shall have made a mark on the Metropolis and be able to render a good account of what has been expended." The School Board for London was constituted in the autumn of 1870, so that the ten years have now elapsed; and the completion of the decade--the first decade of its history--affords a suitable opportunity, not only for a review of the past year, but for a comparison between the state of Elementary Education in the 218 THE WORK TO BE DONE. app. Metropolis now, and its condition at the time of the passing of the Elementary Education Act. The business of the Board is twofold. It has on the one hand to discuss great questions Nature of Work....., ., of principle and method, with a view to attain more effectually the grand end it has set before it; while on the other it has to work the existing machinery, supply lack of accommodation, secure and keep up the attendance of children, mainly of the roughest class, and provide for their instruction. The former part--the theoretic--is of great importance; but the latter, which is the practical part, is that in which, after all, the public take keenest interest. They have a right to be satisfied that we spare no pains to arrive at the best way of doing the work; but they would justly complain if we were to arrest the teaching of the children until our methods were...

Download or read book The Dissenters The crisis and conscience of nonconformity written by Michael R. Watts and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third and final volume of Michael Watts's study of dissent examines the turbulent times of Victorian Nonconformity, a period of faith and of doubt. Watts assesses the impacts of the major Dissenting preachers and provides insights into the various movements, such as romanticism and the higher, often German, biblical criticism. He shows that the preaching of hell and eternal damnation was more effective in recruiting to the chapels than the gentler interpretations. A major feature of the volume is a thorough analysis of surviving records of attendance at Nonconformist services. He provides fascinating accounts of Spurgeon and the other key figures of Nonconformity, including of the Salvation Army. Dr Watts also provides a fresh discussion of the contribution which Nonconformity made to the politics of mid- to late-Victorian Britain. He examines such issues of reform as Forster's Education Act of 1871, temperance, and Balfour's Education Act of 1902, and considers Nonconformist interventions in such controversies as the Bulgarian Agitation, Home Rule for Ireland, the Armenian massacres of the mid 1890s, and the Boer War. The volume concludes with the Liberal landslide in the 1906 general election, which saw probably more Nonconformists elected than any time since the era of Oliver Cromwell.
