Book Red State Religion

  • Author : Robert Wuthnow
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book Red State Religion written by Robert Wuthnow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Kansas really tells us about red state America No state has voted Republican more consistently or widely or for longer than Kansas. To understand red state politics, Kansas is the place. It is also the place to understand red state religion. The Kansas Board of Education has repeatedly challenged the teaching of evolution, Kansas voters overwhelmingly passed a constitutional ban on gay marriage, the state is a hotbed of antiabortion protest—and churches have been involved in all of these efforts. Yet in 1867 suffragist Lucy Stone could plausibly proclaim that, in the cause of universal suffrage, "Kansas leads the world!" How did Kansas go from being a progressive state to one of the most conservative? In Red State Religion, Robert Wuthnow tells the story of religiously motivated political activism in Kansas from territorial days to the present. He examines how faith mixed with politics as both ordinary Kansans and leaders such as John Brown, Carrie Nation, William Allen White, and Dwight Eisenhower struggled over the pivotal issues of their times, from slavery and Prohibition to populism and anti-communism. Beyond providing surprising new explanations of why Kansas became a conservative stronghold, the book sheds new light on the role of religion in red states across the Midwest and the United States. Contrary to recent influential accounts, Wuthnow argues that Kansas conservatism is largely pragmatic, not ideological, and that religion in the state has less to do with politics and contentious moral activism than with relationships between neighbors, friends, and fellow churchgoers. This is an important book for anyone who wants to understand the role of religion in American political conservatism.

Book Memoir of the Rev James H Linsley Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memoir of the Rev James H Linsley Classic Reprint written by Sophia Emilia Lyon Linsley Phelps and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Rev. James H. Linsley IN preparing a Memoir of Rev. James H. Linsley, it was at first thought best to incorporate the scientific re searches of the deceased with this work but on reflection it was concluded, as the results of these labors are already before the public in various forms, it was better to confine the Memoir chiefly to the religious exercises and charac ter of our friend. The writer of this Memoir has performed a labor of love which it is believed will issue in the good of souls. And the glory of God. Should this unpretending volume provoke the frown of the critic, and the Opposition of the enemies of the cross, still it is hoped, it may be blessed to the edification of the tempted and doubting Christian, and prove a note of alarm to the impenitent. It will also add another to the numerous monuments already erected to the praise of the Redeemer's grace, while it will serve to em balm the memory of one, who, like the excellent Samuel Pierce, ardently desired to effect much more in the exten sion of the Saviour's kingdom than he was allowed to ao complish. Book Autobiography of Rev James B Finley Or Pioneer Life in the West Classic Reprint

Download or read book Autobiography of Rev James B Finley Or Pioneer Life in the West Classic Reprint written by James B. Finley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Rev. James B. Finley, or Pioneer Life in the West The following pages contain a brief, unvarnished narrative of the incidents of my life; and as, in the providence of God, I was permitted to grow up with the west, it may not be uninteresting to the people of the west, to be made more fully acquainted with my somewhat eventful history. For upward of forty years I have been constantly engaged in preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the woods, cities, and villages of the west; and nearly all that time, with few exceptions, such as I have noted, my name has been on the effective list of traveling preachers. My time, with what talents I had, has all been consecrated to the Church of my choice, and now, after the lapse of almost half a century in the serv ice of the Church, I would not recall what I have done and suffered for Christ's sake. The only regret that I have is, that I did not accomplish more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
