Both of these painters, Cotman especially, have suffered misconception, since much of their best work, indeed all Cotman's best work, is in private hands and unknown to the general public; and both have been too often judged by imitations of their pictures. Crome's work in particular has been confused with that of his pupils, besides being most extensively imitated.
