Book excerpt: Since his friend died in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, David Sylvester adopted a mission to enhance the world one interaction at a time. To that end, he bicycled and gave charitable service in: North America 2002 - Washington State to Philadelphia Africa 2004 - Cairo to Cape Town Asia 2007 - Istanbul to Beijing North America 2008 - San Diego to NYC North America 2011 - Minneapolis to NYC Australia 2015 - Sydney to Melbourne Unable to bicycle in 2016, "Big Dave"- as he is known - continued his mission via a car and staged Hug Events in 31 states - making it a point to visit places touched by violence like San Bernardino, OKC, Chicago, Cleveland, and Orlando the Pulse Nightclub. The previous year's warmth prompted him to hug people at the "literal" heart/center of the nation in Lebanon, KS, on Valentine's Day 2017. Later in 2017, he continued with Hug and High5 Tour of America and hugged 14K people in 48 states. The experience was fantastic and must have touched a lot of people's hearts because when the shootings in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, Texas, occurred - people said, "Dave get down there and hug people." And he did. Since then, he's staged hug tours throughout Alaska, Europe, and Israel. And even did a 48 state goodwill tour during the pandemic just to create more smiles in the world. That's the story! David Hale Sylvester is just a guy who wants the world to smile and has embraced 500,000] people in 50 states and 42 countries in 20 years to make that grin happen. Here are 99 picture-punctuated stories from Big Dave's travels that will hopefully make you smile too and offer a hug to someone too. Enjoy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tragedy on September 11, 2001 killed many and hurt many more. David Sylvester tried to make sense of that senseless moment by jumping on his bicycle and connecting with people. His message to the people he met across three continents was simple: "Find your bike." It translates to finding your passion and now, ten years later, after pedaling across deserts, down dirt roads and highways, and over the mountains of Africa, Asia, and North America, David spreads his inspirational message on the pages of this book. Whether relaying stories of tragedy or triumph David writes with a degree of honesty, humor and passion that will make you want to 'find your own bike' and go for a ride.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Shannon Hale, bestselling author of Austenland, comes Kind of a Big Deal: a story that will suck you in—literally. “So many strange and wonderful things happen at every twist and turn, you'll be happy to wander with Josie . . . Each book she descends into seems to teach her something, and even if it's not obvious where the story is going, we're in it for the long haul.” —NPR There's nothing worse than peaking in high school. Nobody knows that better than Josie Pie. She was kind of a big deal—she dropped out of high school to be a star! But the bigger you are, the harder you fall. And Josie fell. Hard. Ouch. Broadway dream: dead. Meanwhile, her life keeps imploding. Best friend: distant. Boyfriend: busy. Mom: not playing with a full deck? Desperate to escape, Josie gets into reading. Literally. She reads a book and suddenly she's inside it. And with each book, she’s a different character: a post-apocalyptic heroine, the lead in a YA rom-com, a 17th century wench in a corset. It’s alarming. But also . . . kind of amazing? It’s the perfect way to live out her fantasies. Book after book, Josie the failed star finds a new way to shine. But the longer she stays in a story, the harder it becomes to escape. Will Josie find a story so good that she just stays forever?

Book excerpt: In this provocative essay collection, the author “leans into her roles as both victim and predator [with] prose that’s casual and cool and often funny” (The New York Times). In six wide-ranging essays, Kathleen Hale traces some of the most treacherous fault lines in modern America—from sexual assault to Internet trolling, from environmental illness to our own animal nature. From hunting wild hogs in Florida to a standoff with an anonymous blogger, Hale takes no prisoners and fears no subject. “First I Got Pregnant. Then I Decided to Kill the Mountain Lion” recounts the month Hale spent tracking a wild cat in the Hollywood Hills while pregnant. “Prey” tells the troubling story of her sexual assault as a freshman in college. Through these and other essays, Hale wields razor-sharp wit, deep empathy, and daring honesty, even in detailing some of the most difficult moments of her life.

Standing up to her father, heir to the Broadway/Hale Department Store fortune, Linda is disinherited, then ostracized from the family she loves. When her father marries his mistress, Denise Minnelli, stepmother to Liza Minnelli, the family unravels. Once a child of privilege, Linda recounts, in vivid detail, her extraordinary life—summers on the family's 10,000 acre ranch in Northern California, hunting trips to Africa and Alaska, high society vignettes of a fourth-generation San Francisco family, and her father's final decision: to leave the entire family fortune to Minnelli. But amid the ashes, Linda finds a new strength: the strength to forgive the one who started it all. Download or read book The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore written by Benjamin Hale and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruno Littlemore is quite unlike any chimpanzee in the world. Precocious, self-conscious and preternaturally gifted, young Bruno, born and raised in a habitat at the local zoo, falls under the care of a university primatologist named Lydia Littlemore. Learning of Bruno's ability to speak, Lydia takes Bruno into her home to oversee his education and nurture his passion for painting. But for all of his gifts, the chimpanzee has a rough time caging his more primal urges. His untimely outbursts ultimately cost Lydia her job, and send the unlikely pair on the road in what proves to be one of the most unforgettable journeys -- and most affecting love stories -- in recent literature. Like its protagonist, this novel is big, loud, abrasive, witty, perverse, earnest and amazingly accomplished. The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore goes beyond satire by showing us not what it means, but what it feels like be human -- to love and lose, learn, aspire, grasp, and, in the end, to fail.

Download or read book Gridlock written by Thomas Hale and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues that increasingly dominate the 21st century cannot be solved by any single country acting alone, no matter how powerful. To manage the global economy, prevent runaway environmental destruction, reign in nuclear proliferation, or confront other global challenges, we must cooperate. But at the same time, our tools for global policymaking - chiefly state-to-state negotiations over treaties and international institutions - have broken down. The result is gridlock, which manifests across areas via a number of common mechanisms. The rise of new powers representing a more diverse array of interests makes agreement more difficult. The problems themselves have also grown harder as global policy issues penetrate ever more deeply into core domestic concerns. Existing institutions, created for a different world, also lock-in pathological decision-making procedures and render the field ever more complex. All of these processes - in part a function of previous, successful efforts at cooperation - have led global cooperation to fail us even as we need it most. Ranging over the main areas of global concern, from security to the global economy and the environment, this book examines these mechanisms of gridlock and pathways beyond them. It is written in a highly accessible way, making it relevant not only to students of politics and international relations but also to a wider general readership.
Download or read book Hale Storm written by Kevin Cowherd and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most interesting man in the world? At times, Ed Hale made the Dos Equis guy look like a shut-in. Now for the first time, Hale's inspiring story is told in the pages of Hale Storm. It's a rollicking, inspirational tale like no other: a kid from gritty Sparrow's Point, Md., has his fill of back-breaking work in the steel mill, thumbs his nose at college and sets off to seek his fortune. With an equal measure of brains and guts, he conquers the worlds of business and industry, buys an indoor soccer team, hobnobs with princes, politicians and heads of state, works covertly for the Central Intelligence Agency, dates a succession of astonishingly beautiful women and builds an iconic tower in the midst of the grimy Baltimore waterfront that helps transform acres of forlorn industrial ruin into a thriving neighborhood. The tough times are chronicled here, too: Hale's swings and misses on two turbulent marriages, his history-making divorce from his first wife, union problems and death threats, the plane crashes he survived, the business deals that went sour, the distinctive tower he was forced to sell and the heart-wrenching decision to walk away from the beloved bank that he founded and nurtured for so many years. It's a singular story of an American original that readers won't want to miss.
