Book An African in Imperial London

Download or read book An African in Imperial London written by Danell Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world dominated by the British Empire, and at a time when many Europeans considered black people inferior, Sierra Leonean writer A. B. C. Merriman-Labor claimed his right to describe the world as he found it. He looked at the Empire's great capital and laughed. In this first biography of Merriman-Labor, Danell Jones describes the tragic spiral that pulled him down the social ladder from writer and barrister to munitions worker, from witty observer of the social order to patient in a state-run hospital for the poor. In restoring this extraordinary man to the pantheon of African observers of colonialism, she opens a window onto racial attitudes in Edwardian London. An African in Imperial London is a rich portrait of a great metropolis, writhing its way into a new century of appalling social inequity, world-transforming inventions, and unprecedented demands for civil rights.

Book Punishment

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Tunick
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 1915
  • ISBN : 9780520912311
  • Pages : 810 pages

Download or read book Punishment written by Mark Tunick and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 1915 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What actions should be punished? Should plea-bargaining be allowed? How should sentencing be determined? In this original, penetrating study, Mark Tunick explores not only why society punishes wrongdoing, but also how it implements punishment. Contending that the theory and practice of punishment are inherently linked, Tunick draws on a broad range of thinkers, from the radical criticisms of Nietzsche, Foucault, and some Marxist theorists through the sociological theories of Durkheim and Girard to various philosophical traditions and the "law and economics" movement. He defends punishment against its radical critics and offers a version of retribution, distinct from revenge, that holds that we punish not to deter or reform, but to mete out just deserts, vindicate right, and express society's righteous anger. Demonstrating first how this theory best accounts for how punishment is carried out, he then provides "immanent criticism" of certain features of our practice that don't accord with the retributive principle. Thought-provoking and deftly argued, Punishment will garner attention and spark debate among political theorists, philosophers, legal scholars, sociologists, and criminologists. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1992. What actions should be punished? Should plea-bargaining be allowed? How should sentencing be determined? In this original, penetrating study, Mark Tunick explores not only why society punishes wrongdoing, but also how it implements punishment.

Book Terrae filius Or The Secret History of the University of Oxford 1721 1726

Download or read book Terrae filius Or The Secret History of the University of Oxford 1721 1726 written by Nicholas Amhurst and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Amhurst was often dismissed by nineteenth-century historians of Oxford as a bitter "slanderer of his university," his work stands as the single most important and reliable contemporarily published account of life in early eighteenth-century Oxford. The Terrae-Filius essays, despite their satirical bent, also demonstrate that Amhurst had a deep respect for the institution and a clear vision of the intellectual ideas it should embody. This modern critical edition reprints all fifty-three Terrae-Filius essays (including the three omitted from the 1726 collected editions) and provides an introduction and extensive explanatory notes that set the essays in their historical and cultural context."--BOOK JACKET.
