Book excerpt: In the wake of rising “fake news” and false information being easily spread all over the internet, I believe that it’s important to teach students to critically think about the information they consume, even if it comes in meme form. Working with information found on social media through memes can be extremely dangerous and be rife with “fake news”. Because of this, I had the idea to pursue the topic of making Internet memes in order to teach critical thinking. The end result I wanted was that high school students could both enjoy memes, as well as critically gauge how these ‘simple’ memes could affect them. In this thesis, I had initially planned to investigate and answer the question, “can Internet memes teach students to critically think about the intentions of the media that they consume?” This project was slated to take place at a public High School in northern Chicago, but due to problems with technology, a difference in understanding of humor and context, and the pandemic’s effect on students, I ended up not pushing through with my original proposal. Instead, I decided to implement my project in a different, more low-key way: through conversation. By utilizing the nature of memes as a medium in which to communicate ideas, feelings, and thoughts, I talked with students in the hallways, before class, after class, during my prep period, or even while they were working on their projects during class–I initiated as many conversations with my students as I could, many of which had nothing to do with art or with teaching. I put an emphasis on checking in with students and making meaningful conversations with verbal memes. And in these conversations, I listened to them utilize internet memes in their speech. They spoke with slang, talked about memes they saw on TikTok or Twitter. While I had hoped that Internet memes could teach them about critical thinking through my project, what I was hearing in conversations was the way they utilized memes to express themselves in a completely unique way. They expressed themselves in vivid ways, bending and playing with slang to talk about important issues. They showed in their speech that when it came to topics that they were passionate about, they were capable of critical analysis through verbal memes–they didn’t need an entire lesson plan to unlock that skill. They were perfectly capable of thinking deeply and profoundly.

Thousands of its viewers responded by creating and posting their own variations of the video—“Mitt Romney Style,” “NASA Johnson Style,” “Egyptian Style,” and many others. “Gangnam Style” (and its attendant parodies, imitations, and derivations) is one of the most famous examples of an Internet meme: a piece of digital content that spreads quickly around the web in various iterations and becomes a shared cultural experience. In this book, Limor Shifman investigates Internet memes and what they tell us about digital culture.
