This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mementos of the Golden Wedding at Longwood, With Genealogies, 1873 The cultivated and refined ever found genial and cor dial sympathy in their society. But most of all, they were each to the other a help-meet, and never neglected their own large household. Ten children were like olive plants round about their table, Who, through many perils and sicknesses, some nigh unto death, have all reached or passed the merid ian of life, and by the blessing of God, are enabled to engage in its active duties: following the example of their parents, in doing with their might, whatsoever their hands find to do. Two have endured the privations of a pioneer life in California, and now have bright and pleasant homes there. One has the same in Wisconsin, while the others are nearer their birth-place and parents. But, from far and near, on the evening of the sixth of May, all had assembled, with their wives, husband, and little ones, in their beloved home. On the morning of the seventh, the doors of this ever hospitable retreat were thrown wide open to welcome such friends as could or would come to present their congratulations, and unite with the family, in their grati tude for the blessings of fifty long years. The sun shone in splendor, the air was balmy, the grounds and house were tastefully decorated, and everything smiled upon this happy, loving family of twenty-five members. Immediately after family prayers in the morning, (which were offered most fervently and touchingly, with a heart over owing in gratitude and praise for the united family, by the son-in-law, Reverend Hamilton B. Holmes, ) the hearts of the parents were. Touched by gifts from their children and grand-children, who were in turn, filled withmost tender emotions, by words of love, and gifts from their parents, of valuable antiques, as well as golden offer ings. The domestics of the household were present at this family re-union, and were substantially remembered, and many others were cheered by tokens of friendship - thank offerings from these stewards of the Lord. Download or read book Antebellum Natchez written by D. Clayton James and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1993-05-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antebellum Natchez is most often associated with the grand and romantic aspects of the Old South and its landed gentry. Yet there was, as this book so amply illustrates, another Natchez—the Natchez of ordinary citizens, small businessmen, and free Negroes, and the Natchez under-the-Hill of brawling boatmen, professional gamblers, and bold-faced strumpets. Antebellum Natchez not only takes a critical look at the town’s aristocracy but also examines the depth of its commercial activities and the life of its middle- and lower-class elements. Author D. Clayton James brings the political, economic, and social aspects of antebellum Natchez into perspective and debunks a number of myths and illusions, including the notion that the town was a stronghold of Federalism and Whiggery. Starting with the Natchez Indians and their “Sun God” culture, James traces the development of the town from the native village through the plotting and intrigue of the changing regimes of the French, Spanish, British, and Americans. James makes a perceptive analysis of the aristocrats’ role in restricting the growth of the town, which in 1800 appeared likely to become the largest city in the transmontane region. “The attitudes and behavior of the aristocrats of Natchez during the final three decades of the antebellum period were characterized by escapism and exclusiveness,” says James. “With the aristocrats sullenly withdrawing into their world...Natchez lost forever the opportunity to become a major metropolis, and Mississippi was led to ruin.” Quoting generously from diaries, journals, and other records, the author gives the reader a valuable insight into what life in a Southern town was like before the Civil War. Antebellum Natchez is an important account of the role of Natchez and its colorful figures—John Quitman, Robert Walker, Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, William C. C. Claiborne, and a host of others—in the colonial affairs of the Lower Mississippi Valley and the growth of the Old Southwest.
