Book excerpt: "A supernatural mystery—part Stranger Things, part Enola Homes, but very much itself... This book is way, way over the top—and is sure to delight its intended audience." -- firstCLUE Stranger Things meets the Golden Age of Detective fiction in a rollicking supernatural detective thriller that introduces Artie Quick, a sales assistant at Filene’s in Boston, who moonlights as an amateur detective. The year is 1909, and Artie Quick—an ambitious, unorthodox and inquisitive young Bostonian—wants to learn about crime. By day she holds down a job as a salesgirl in women’s accessories at Filene’s; by night she disguises herself as a man to pursue studies in Criminal Investigation at the YMCA's Evening Institute for Younger Men. Eager to put theory into practice, Artie sets out in search of something to investigate. She's joined by her pal Theodore, an upper-crust young bachelor whose interest in Boston's occult counterculture has drawn him into the study of magic. Together, their journey into mystery begins on Boston Common—where the tramps and the groundskeepers swap rumors about unearthly screams and other unsettling anomalies—but soon Artie and Theodore uncover a series of violent abductions that take them on an adventure from the highest corridors of power to the depths of an abandoned mass transit tunnel, its excavation suspiciously never completed. Will Theodore ever manage to pull off a successful spell? Is Artie really wearing that men's suit just for disguise or is there something more to it? And what chance do two mixed-up young people stand up against the greatest horror Boston has ever known, an ancient, deranged evil that feeds on society's most vulnerable?

Book MEDITATION MOMENTS TO MELT THE HEART

Download or read book MEDITATION MOMENTS TO MELT THE HEART written by Joyce Canary Rose and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can God’s faithfulness be seen on the frosting covered face of a baby celebrating his first birthday? Can harvesting blueberries teach me how to overcome fear? Can patience be heard in the laughter of a toddler? Yes! Yes! Yes! Lessons retrieved from God’s Word can be melted into the heart through absorbing ordinary moments! In Meditation Moments To Melt The Heart, three points are used as a triad to lead the reader to apply God’s Truth. At one point of this triangle is a touching and true story. At the second point is a candid and timeless photo, which illustrates the story and adds a visual experience to the emotional one. At the top point is the trusted Word of God. An honest and life-altering application of a Bible passage is given in each of the fifty-two meditations. As a graduate of Cairn University (Philadelphia College of Bible), the author places utmost value on interpreting the Word of God rightly and truthfully. Meditation Moments To Melt The Heart is a devotional book to be assimilated into the spiritual core of the reader. It will melt away discouragement and doubt, and fill the reader with confidence and contentment. Praise for Meditation Moments to Melt the Heart: “Joyce is at ease with her words and conveys what she has learned in a comfortable, endearing way. I know you will enjoy the concepts from Scripture, the applications to life, and her use of word pictures, as well as real photos. Take the time to enjoy these pages. You will be drawn to the message of Christ in everyday moments, in everyday language, and in everyday situations.” — Mrs. Shirley Bubar, mentor of women enrolled in Word of Life Bible Institute, and teacher of “Christian Womanhood”, for twenty years.

Some of his well-known books on social issues include, A Tribute to the Prostitute (On sex workers) Because I am a girl child (on the girl child), Homes Aflame (on domestic violence), A Mute Refute (violence against women), Adults amused but Child Abused (On Child Abuse). The author has a number of poems dealing with nature, romance, and spirituality, some of which have been published in various leading magazines, while the rest are being compiled for publication. Have you ever imagined how the world would be when you and I would not exist on this planet apart from the future generation? As Christ put it, no one knows the day or the hour of the second coming. In whose time the prophetic visions would actualize is difficult to predict, but as the Spirit who has revealed these Prophetic Visions, to the author, he suggests that it will not be before 5050! The day, probably the fifth of May, 5050 would be when the whole globe has the same season because of the irresponsible way in which the caretakers, bring about an imbalance in the way nature controls the seasons. By then, it is estimated that different regions that enjoyed different climates would have the same, static very hot climate. The Sun would shine at its peak, melting the remaining snow on mountain tops, evaporating the sea waters, stopping the rains; in a nut shell the fiery heat would convert the planet into a furnace-drying all the water bodies, scorching trees and causing wild fires and thus the fertility of the soil would be lost leaving no scope for humanity and any creature to survive!

Book A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare The tempest 1892

Download or read book A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare The tempest 1892 written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 1892 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare: The Tempest It is interesting to note the uniformity of the estimate of Caliban's character by the critics. While all acknowledge his power and his attractiveness, scornings, loathings, and revilings are nevertheless heaped on him; indeed, I can recall but one solitary voice really raised in his favour: 'in some respects, ' says coleridge, 'caliban 'is a noble being.' It has become one of the commonplaces in crit icisms on the Play to say that Caliban is the contrast to Ariel (some times varied by substituting Miranda for Ariel), and that as the tricksy sprite is the type of the air and of unfettered fancy, so is the abhorred slave typical of the earth and of all brutish appetites; the detested hag - seed is then dismissed blistered all o'er with expressions of abhorrence and with denunciations of his vileness, which any print of goodness will not take. Is there, then, nothing to be said in favour of Caliban? Is there really and truly no print of goodness in him? Kindly Nature never wholly deserts her offspring, nor does shake speare. We may be very sure that he, who knew so well that there is always some soul of goodness in things evil, would not have abandoned even Caliban without infusing into his nature some charm which might be observingly distilled out. Why is it that Caliban's speech is always rhythmical? There is no character in the play whose words fall at times into sweeter cadences if the Eolian melodies of the air are sweet, the deep bass of the earth is no less rhythmically resonant. We who see Caliban only in his prime and, a victim of heredity, full grown, are apt to forget the years of his childhood and of his innocency, when Prospero fondled him, stroked him, and made much of him, and Miranda taught him to speak, and with the sympathetic instinct of young girlhood interpreted his thoughts and endowed his purposes with words. When Caliban says that it was his mistress who showed him the man in the moon with his dog and his bush, what a picture is unfolded to us of summer nights on the Enchanted Island, where, how ever quiet lies the landscape in the broad moonlight, every hill and brook and standing lake and grove is peopled with elves, and on the shore, overlooking the yellow sands where fairies foot it featly, sits the young instructress deciphering for the misshapen slave at her feet the features of the full-orbed moon. With such a teacher, in such hours, would it be possible for Caliban, even were he twice the monster that he is, to resist, at the most impressible age, the subtle influence of the atmosphere of poetry which breathed in every nook and corner of the Enchanted Island? The wonder is not that he ever after speaks in rhythm; the wonder would be if he did not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
