Book excerpt: In her home village, Aivee is worse than nobody. If her secret identity as a half-demon leaks out, she's dead. But in the capital city she will reinvent herself as a dancer. She'll be wealthy, and adored by thousands. Nobody will be able to hurt her. Will they? Nori knows how cruel the city can be. She's lost her mother to its plagues, and lately her younger sister has joined the ranks of its disappeared. But she's not giving up. The ruling classes think they can treat people worse than beasts and strip them of their human rights. Powerful factions want to keep the epidemic of missing people a secret. Well, they can eat her blades. Nori joins a group of vigilantes fighting for answers, and voices in her head urge her to recruit Aivee to the cause. These vigilantes are bumbling amateurs, as likely to get themselves killed as to save anyone. But Nori is changing, going mad, lusting for battle and remembering centuries-old conflicts. She will whip them into shape, or die trying. Bloodthirsty gangs, inhuman mages, and dragon gods have it in for the people of Kaddon city. Yes, Nori is mad. But she's not nearly even.

Book excerpt: Since the ages before time was measured, the angelic races have existed. Unseen by our eyes, they move through creation, shaping our world, sustaining our existence, and battling demonic hordes. But the war is changing; the battle lines are expanding into new frontiers and the next epoch is emerging. Seven hundred years after the first humans were exiled from their home, their descendants have pushed eastward into a prehistoric wilderness. In a land shrouded by mist and superstition, primitive tribes struggle to establish new civilizations, unaware that their world is about to change forever. Weary from unceasing conflict, Sariel—legendary warrior of the Myndarym—crosses into the Temporal Realm in search of the only one who can bring him peace. But he is not the first; others have already begun their inhabitation. As the dominance of their kingdom spreads, threatening to engulf all of humanity, Sariel finds himself standing between his own kind and the one he loves and must embrace the life he abandoned in order to secure her freedom. In this riveting prequel to the bestselling Awakened series, Jason Tesar sets in motion a sweeping fantasy epic birthed at the very foundations of humanity when our prehistoric world collided with supernatural forces, spawning an age of mythological creatures and heroes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Story of Melody is the second installment of the breathtaking poetry series, Blessings and Demons, written by Salomen "Sal" Williams. Expanding on the first installments 4th Chapter, True Heart's Desire. Story of Melody takes you through the thrill and heartbreak of a young unexpected love. Seemingly, this kind of love is fated and thus uncontrollable. At least that seemed to be his own perception. Though ill-advised, his blinded heart loved her uncontrollably. While in heavy silence, there remains a muted question. What is Love? Such a flawed and foolish notion. Disclosed by the soft whispers of lust. Unknowingly, his heart created an illusion. A sick and twisted projection of what was reality. Though, truthfully, he remained bound by unmoving time and dying love. Condemned was his soul, to drown in the depths of her consuming passion. Frigid and numbing, like a locked haunted chamber, with cold unforgiving chains. Chains that are forged with such irony in love, leading her bright eyes to darken his soul, a recession towards his own hell. But, as he unwillingly departs from heaven, he takes with him all she could share...

Download or read book Trafficking with Demons written by Martha Rampton and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trafficking with Demons explores how magic was perceived, practiced, and prohibited in western Europe during the first millennium CE. Through the overlapping frameworks of religion, ritual, and gender, Martha Rampton connects early Christian reckonings with pagan magic to later doctrines and dogmas. Challenging established views on the role of women in ritual magic during this period, Rampton provides a new narrative of the ways in which magic was embedded within the foundational assumptions of western European society, informing how people understood the cosmos, divinity, and their own Christian faith. As Rampton shows, throughout the first Christian millennium, magic was thought to play a natural role within the functioning of the universe and existed within a rational cosmos hierarchically arranged according to a "great chain of being." Trafficking with the "demons of the lower air" was the essense of magic. Interactions with those demons occurred both in highly formalistic, ritual settings and on a routine and casual basis. Rampton tracks the competition between pagan magic and Christian belief from the first century CE, when it was fiercest, through the early Middle Ages, as atavistic forms of magic mutated and found sanctuary in the daily habits of the converted peoples and new paganisms entered Europe with their own forms of magic. By the year 1000, she concludes, many forms of magic had been tamed and were, by the reckoning of the elite, essentially ineffective, as were the women who practiced it and the rituals that attended it.
