Book excerpt: Barcelonian Gaspar Cassadó (1897-1966) was one of the greatest cello virtuosi of the twentieth century and a notable composer and arranger, leaving a vast and heterogeneous legacy. In this book, Gabrielle Kaufman provides the first full-length scholarly work dedicated to Cassadó, containing the results of seven years of research into his life and legacy, after following the cellist’s steps through Spain, France, Italy and Japan. The study presents in-depth descriptions of the three main parts of Cassadó’s creative output: composition, transcription and performance, especially focusing on Cassadó’s plural and multi-facetted creativity, which is examined from both cultural and historical perspectives. Cassadó’s role within the evolution of twentieth-century cello performance is thoroughly examined, including a discussion regarding the musical and technical aspects of performing Cassadó’s works, aimed directly at performers. The study presents the first attempt at a comprehensive catalogue of Cassadó’s works, both original and transcribed, as well as his recordings, using a number of new archival sources and testimonies. In addition, the composer’s significance within Spanish twentieth-century music is treated in detail through a number of case studies, sustained by examples from recovered score manuscripts. Illuminated by extraordinary source material Gaspar Cassadó: Cellist, Composer and Transcriber expands and deepens our knowledge of this complex figure, and will be of crucial importance to students and scholars in the fields of Performance Practice and Spanish Music, as well as to professional cellists and advanced cello students.

Book Slices of a Life

Book excerpt: Slices of a Life consists of memoirs and meditations---odd, strange, amusing, touching, or otherwise of interest---that readers from all walks and stages of life can enjoy. Although being, to a large extent, a farrago of the author's failings, follies, frailties, foibles, and other folderol and foofaraw, the book nevertheless seeks to demonstrate that this former Midwestern attorney---with a knack for waxing poetic, philosophizing, or poking fun at himself, sometimes in a single breath---is a worthy and meritorious person. Capturing the essence of life---the highs and the lows, the ups and the downs, triumph and defeat, the good, the bad, and the ugly, etc.---in the Midwest (specifically Chicago and its suburbs) over a long period of time, the book expounds on such universal topics as family, youth, friendship, fatherhood, pets, sports, travel, and more.

The ants' daring and unexpected attempts to get home and find freedom are exciting and suspenceful for children and readers. The stark reality that most chocolate is produced using child-slavery is softened for listeners between six and 10 years old; older readers will hear the message that Ocellus and Chitkin are telling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Phyllis Barber’s thirty-three-year marriage ended, she had to redefine herself as a woman, a mother, and an artist. Raw Edges is her moving account of the “lean years” that followed her divorce. It is interwoven with a narrative of the marriage of two gifted people that begins with “sealing” in a Mormon temple, endures through the birth of four sons and the development of two careers, and founders when the couple’s personal needs no longer match their aspirations or the rigid strictures of Mormon life. Raw Edges reflects the predicament that many women experience as their marriages disintegrate and they fail to achieve their own expectations as well as those set by their society and their faith. It is also a story of hope, of how a woman overcome by grief and confusion eventually finds a new approach to life.

And on top of that she thinks the social worker used to be her best friend’s old flame, but decides not to tell either of them. Jeanette and Sam have been together a long time. Unable to have their own children, they have decided to adopt. However, while she is developing an obsession with Paul, the oh-so-serious social worker, Sam is involved in a thing that’s not yet a fling, but heading that way. Is her relationship with Sam in such trouble? Or do they just need some children in their life? Then everything will be all right, won’t it? Juxtaposed with Jeanette’s first person narrative is the story of Levi, a young boy trapped in the care system, who is allowed no say about his life at all. We learn how he was taken away from his mother, along with his little sister, and moved from foster home to foster home, then back to his mother, a decision that ultimately leads to tragedy.

Book Gifjapegadoodle Abstracts 4

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas Gilbert
  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2017-11-13
  • ISBN : 1387363840
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Gifjapegadoodle Abstracts 4 written by Douglas Gilbert and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This art is purported to be inspired by a rare ancient art form. It adapts the technique of the ancient way of knowledge by insinuation. These works are objects for meditation. Hidden secrets inhere to a subtle line or color even if a modern dress disguises the intricate subtle matrix beneath a chaotic splash of gaudy glosses. The inchoate ancient abstract forms were smuggled out through ancient portals to other galaxies hidden in the caves of Bhutan. It is said that a thousand messages can be written into the crevices of a single stalagmite if beams of inspiration collide in the manner of the ancient prophesies that ingrained an enlightened code into the woven threads of silky wisdom. But when is poetry abstract, and when is it a riddle and a rhyme-- it depends on how long one dreams, and sees stars in the sky and mind. It is to be contemplated in the mind of the beholder. A romp without pomp is best enjoyed in the last laugh that breezes the day in a grasp of joy.
