Download or read book The Kung San written by Richard Borshay Lee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-12-12 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of human history hunting and gathering was a universal way of life. Richard Borshay Lee spent over three years conducting fieldwork among the !Kung San, an isolated population of 1,000 in northern Botswana. When Lee began his work in 19863, the !Kung San were one of the last of the world's people to live this life. By 1973, when Lee last lived with the group, it appeared that they !Kung were a society on the threshold of a transformation that signalled the end of foraging as an independent way of life, at least in Africa. The !Kung San: Men, Women and Work in a Foraging Society, an ecological and historical study, is Professor Lee's major statement on his research. By maintaining simultaneous historical and synchronic perspectives, Lee is able to extend his analysis of core features from the contemporary !Kung to prehistoric societies. These basic principles become the means to understanding the form of human life that has been obscured by the developments and complications of societies during the last few thousand years.
Download or read book Hunter and Habitat in the Central Kalahari Desert written by George B. Silberbauer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-04-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana is a sand desert covered by scrub and thorn forest, dry and bitterly cold in winter and extremely hot in summer before the short wet season. The only kinds of vegetation surviving this climate are short-lived annuals and deciduous species that lie dormant in the dry season. In this inhospitable territory live the hunter-gatherer G/wi bushmen. George Silberbauer has lived and worked among the G/wi for over ten years. In Hunter and Habitat, he analyses the ways in which G/wi society and culture have been shaped by the rugged natural environment. The book provides a thorough analysis of G/wi society, describing their social, political, and economic organization, their living patterns, subsistence technology, and seasonal adaptations. In short, Hunter and Habitat describes and elucidates the foundation of G/wi society: the interrelationships of the bushmen, their sociocultural system, and their habitat.

Download or read book Politics and History in Band Societies written by Richard Lee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-09-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume present important information on the history and culture of contemporary gathering and hunting peoples from Canada, India, Africa, Australia and the Philippines. The volume focuses on two themes: first, on the techniques which band-living foraging peoples employ to organise their social and economic lives; and second, on their fight for the right to their own lands and for a measure of cultural and political autonomy. The contributors maintain that gatherer-hunters are not examples of a disappearing way of life, but peoples who have maintained their social and economic practices through long periods of contact with stratified societies. The aim of this volume it to make known to as wide an audience as possible the daily lives, the patterns of relations between the sexes and the political orientations of the world's contemporary foragers.
Download or read book Tribal Innovators written by Isaac Schapera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a completely revised version of a study published in 1943. That study, entitled Tribal Legislation among the Tswana of the Bechuanaland Protectorate, dealt with the role of chiefs as agents of social change and, in particular, with the changes they brought about by making new laws. It described the various kinds of legislative process current among the Tswana, and reviewed systematically the content and scope of the many laws made, from the earliest known instances up to the time of writing (1942), in eight different chiefdoms or 'tribes'; it also stated, where possible, why those laws were enacted, and discussed how far they really succeeded in establishing new ways of life.
Download or read book Kalahari Hunter gatherers written by Richard B. Lee and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of the original publication of this book, Richard B. Lee was Professor of Anthropology at the University of Toronto and Irven DeVore was Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. This book is the product of a number of years of work by a variety of specialists who each brought their various talents and techniques to bear in studying the behavior of a small group of people, the San (Bushman). The intention was to understand a way of life, not some limited aspect of human behavior. The importance of the San comes from the fundamental role which hunting has played in human history. Contemporary peoples who still rely on hunting help give us a deeper understanding of a major segment of human history. Kalahari Hunter-Gatherers is a collection of studies that is bound to be of interest to a broad range of social scientists and general readers.

Download or read book Past and Present in Hunter Gatherer Studies written by Carmel Schrire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume shows how hunter gatherer societies maintain their traditional lifeways in the face of interaction with neighboring herders, farmers, and traders. Using historical, anthropological and archaeological data and cases from Africa, Australia, and Southeast Asia, the authors examine hunter gatherer peoples—both past and present--to assess these relationships and the mechanisms by which hunter gatherers adapt and maintain elements of their culture in the wider world around them.
