Book Some Wear Leather Some Wear Lace

Download or read book Some Wear Leather Some Wear Lace written by Andrea Harriman and published by Intellect Books. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a scene that had many names: some original members referred to themselves as punks, others, new romantics, new wavers, the bats or the morbids. 'Goth' did not gain lexical currency until the late 1980s. But no matter what term was used, 'postpunk' encompasses all the incarnations of the 1980s alternative movement. Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace is a visual and oral history of the first decade of the scene. Featuring interviews with both the performers and the audience to capture the community on and off stage, the book places personal snapshots alongside professional photography to reveal a unique range of fashions, bands and scenes. A book about the music, the individual and the creativity of a worldwide community rather than theoretical definitions of a subculture, Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace considers a subject not often covered by academic books. Whether you were part of the scene or are just fascinated by different modes of expression, this book will transport you to another time and place.

Book The Art Treasure Hunt

Download or read book The Art Treasure Hunt written by Doris Kutschbach and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing young readers to great art is as easy as A, B, see! Young children love a good game of "I Spy with My Little Eye." In this beautifully designed book they are playfully challenged to find details "hidden" in some of the world's greatest paintings. On each double-page spread, a large reproduction of a masterpiece such as Kandinsky's Heavenly Blue, Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Rousseau's The Dream or Breugel's Children's Games is paired with a list of items to search for: a dog, an umbrella, or a ball, for instance. A brief age-appropriate text makes connections between the art and the child's own environment. The pictures expose children to an endless array of artistic styles, periods, and cultures. Although the appendix contains solutions to the challenges, every child knows that the fun is in the hunt. Filled with hours of joyful discovery, this art book sets the stage for greater artistic appreciation as children grow older.

Book Old Hoodoo

Download or read book Old Hoodoo written by Mark D. Cowan and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas was early-on considered something of an ugly duckling in the Navy, often characterized as a clumsy "hoodoo", or jinxed ship. Her service in the Spanish American War proved her to be a late bloomer, an odd-looking ship that met the challenges of combat and served her nation well as a critical step in the development of the New Navy. Perhaps being seen as the least valuable battleship in the Navy and therefore the most expendable, the Texas found herself in the enviable position of seeing more action than any other capital vessel in the US Fleet. The Texas shone in every engagement in which she was committed. She took part in the search for the Spanish fleet. She also participated in the first significant independent Marine Corps action in history when she provided critical support in their capture of Guantanamo Bay. She then provided support to the Army in the invasion of Cuba and the subsequent investiture of Santiago, engaging a number of Spanish forts in the process. Off Santiago, she took the first hit by an enemy gun and the first combat death for the Navy, being struck by enemy shells in two different actions. At the Naval Battle of Santiago she steamed aggressively forward into the thick of battle and directly engaged six warships of the Spanish fleet. Though clearly obsolescent, few patriotic sailors would not have wanted to walk her powder and blood-stained decks. The Texas was conceived in an era when the US Navy was attempting to arise from the post-Civil War neglect that had crippled its ability to assert itself in international waters. It was a period of great change, both technologically and in the development of the theory of naval power as espoused by Alfred Thayer Mahan. She sailed in the time before the US Navy had reached the renowned strength and professionalism it exhibited in World Wars One and Two, but contributed immeasurably to this achievement. This is the illustrated story of the design, construction, and operational history of the USS Texas of 1895, America's first battleship and hero of the Spanish-American War. Hundreds of historic photos and plans combined with exhaustively researched text capture the spirit of the age, as well as the technological details of the ship.
