Book Meghan and Beth Discover It s a Men s World

Download or read book Meghan and Beth Discover It s a Men s World written by Grace Peterson and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-07-19 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intrigued by whispers of a community connection, Beth picks up the book chronicling Meghan’s life after graduate school. As both women navigate careers amid outdated attitudes about women’s place, they discover the persisting barriers of a man’s world. While Meghan conducts research into the decline of family farms, her work conjures Beth’s own rural upbringing and current reality as a farm wife straddling tradition and technology. Their parallel sexual awakenings underscore the universality of women’s experience. An insider’s glimpse of Meghan’s faculty position reveals to Beth the complex machinery underlying campus life. As Beth reflects on the roads untaken, Meghan’s bold choices highlight the excitement missing from Beth’s more traditional path. Ultimately, their interwoven stories surface timeless questions about agency, destiny, and the feminine struggle to balance fierce independence with enduring community. Do we ever really choose our fate, or does life choose for us?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In over fifteen years, the cultural and artistic response to 9/11 has been wide-ranging in form and function. As the turbulent post-9/11 years have unfolded – years that have been shaped and characterized by the War on Terror, the Patriot Act, the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, 7/7, Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay – these texts have been commemorative and heroic, have attempted to work through collective and individual traumas, and have struggled with trying to represent the “terrorist other.” Many of these earlier domestic, heroic and traumatic works have so often been read as limitations in narrative. This collection, however, challenges the language of limitation and provides re-readings of earlier work, but also traces the emergence of a new paradigm for discussing the artistic responses to 9/11 – one that frames these narratives as dialogic, self-conscious and self-reflexive interventions in the responses to the attacks, the initial representations of the attacks, and the ever-shifting social and geopolitical continuities of the 9/11 decade. These texts widen the conversation about the lasting impacts of 9/11, and incorporate strands of discussion on American exceptionalism and imperialism, torture, and otherness, whilst still remaining invested in the personal and collective traumas of the attacks. The authors included here ask crucial questions about the way 9/11 is being historicized: will it, for example, be read as a moment of rupture or epoch? Will it inevitably be attached to the War on Terror or the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? As they trace the emergent patterns of reflexivity, politicization and dissent, the contributions here are also implicitly invested in asking how far they extend.

Book Mid century women s writing

Download or read book Mid century women s writing written by Melissa Dinsman and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional narrative of the mid-century (1930s-60s) is that of a wave of expansion and constriction, with the swelling of economic and political freedoms for women in the 1930s, the cresting of women in the public sphere during the Second World War, and the resulting break as employment and political opportunities for women dwindled in the 1950s when men returned home from the front. But as the burgeoning field of interwar and mid-century women’s writing has demonstrated, this narrative is in desperate need of re-examination. Mid-century women's writing: Disrupting the public/private divide aims to revivify studies of female writers, journalists, broadcasters, and public intellectuals living or working in Britain, or under British rule, during the mid-century while also complicating extant narratives about the divisions between domesticity and politics.

Book Growing God s Family

    Book Details:
  • Author : Samuel L Perry
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2016-12-06
  • ISBN : 1479877360
  • Pages : 207 pages

Download or read book Growing God s Family written by Samuel L Perry and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrates the hidden challenges embedded within the evangelical adoption movement. For over a decade, prominent leaders and organizations among American Evangelicals have spent a substantial amount of time and money in an effort to address what they believe to be the “Orphan Crisis” of the United States. Yet, despite an expansive commitment of resources, there is no reliable evidence that these efforts have been successful. Adoptions are declining across the board, and both foster parenting and foster-adoptions remain steady. Why have evangelical mobilization efforts been so ineffective? To answer this question, Samuel L. Perry draws on interviews with over 220 movement leaders and grassroots families, as well as national data on adoption and fostering, to show that the problem goes beyond orphan care. Perry argues that evangelical social engagement is fundamentally self-limiting and difficult to sustain because their subcultural commitments lock them into an approach that does not work on a practical level. Growing God’s Family ultimately reveals this peculiar irony within American evangelicalism by exposing how certain aspects of the evangelical subculture may stimulate activism to address social problems, even while these same subcultural characteristics undermine their own strategic effectiveness. It provides the most recent analysis of dominant elements within the evangelical subculture and how that subculture shapes the engagement strategies of evangelicals as a group.
