Book excerpt: David Corio has systematically photographed the megalithic sites of England and Wales with the eye of a great landscape photographer as well as with the passion of an explorer in the ruins of an ancient culture. These photographs go to the heart of prehistoric England and reveal a profound sense of 'place'. The sites are revealed with all the beauty that invited Romantic speculation from the seventeenth century onwards as well as the encroaching modern world of distant urban skylines and protective barriers. Lai Ngan's text distils the mythical narratives that arose around these extraordinary structures and places as well as pointing to the recent astronomical and mathematical research which suggests their remarkable function in the prehistoric calendar. The photographs point to the beginning of architecture itself in Britain, with the suggestion of both sacred and secular function, layered in the fabulous tales of popular imagination.

Book Places of Special Virtue

Download or read book Places of Special Virtue written by Alasdair Whittle and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the landscape settings of megalithic chambered monuments in Wales. Set against a broader theoretical discussion on the significance of the landscape, the authors consider the role of visual landscapes in prehistory, meanings attached to the landscape, and the values and beliefs invested in it. Wales is rich in Neolithic monuments, but the general absence of certain classic monumental forms found in the rest of Britain and Ireland, such as causewayed enclosures, henges, and cursus monuments, seems to have marginalized the Welsh record from many wider discussions on the Neolithic. Instead of seeing Wales as an area which lacks many of these 'classic' components, Cummings and Whittle argue that Wales has its own unique and individual Neolithic which is simply different from the Neolithic found further to the east. It is suggested that this difference may relate to an essentially mobile existence, with strong links back to the Mesolithic period. The authors present three detailed case studies, examining the settings of sites in southwest, northwest and southeast Wales. They outline the history of research for each region, including the previous classification of the monuments and any excavations, and describe the specific landscape settings of the monuments. They assess the significance of a variety of landscape features which would have been visible from the monuments, in particular emphasizing the mythological and symbolic significance of the sea, rivers and mountains. An illustrated inventory of sites completes the volume.

Book The Old Stones of Wales

Download or read book The Old Stones of Wales written by Andy Burnham and published by Watkins. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many hundreds of fascinating prehistoric sites in Wales, in some of the most beautiful locations in Britain, from mountaintop settings, such as at Bryn Cader Faner, to headlands with all-round sea views, as at Coetan Arthur, or on truly remote moorland, as at Bannau Sir Gaer. The road links between North and South Wales are not that great, so it's probably best to choose one or the other as a destination unless you are up for a lot of motoring. In North Wales, Anglesey has a particularly dense concentration of megalithic sites, with many in Gwynedd and Conwy to visit on the way. South Wales stretches from Monmouthshire to Pembrokeshire, where there is the biggest and best variety of sites, including the iconic Pentre Ifan with its capstone apparently delicately floating over its three massive uprights. The Old Stones of Wales is part of a series covering the megalithic and other prehistoric sites of Britain and Ireland. The series is published together as The Old Stones: A Field Guide to the Megalithic Sites of Britain and Ireland, available as a book and an ebook.

Download or read book Bluestone Magic written by Robin Heath and published by . This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever felt, while visiting a megalithic monument, that there may be something more going on beyond the sparse model of human culture in prehistory presented by archaeologists and historians? If so, then this book may be exactly what you have been looking for -- because it offers an explanation as to why those monuments are out there on the landscape, and why they were placed at a particular location. And more! Whether the local bluestones were taken to Stonehenge or moved by glacial action, they were certainly important in prehistoric times, being employed in various stages of the construction of Stonehenge. The history of this mystery, ancient and modern, from Merlin and Geoffrey of Monmouth to the 'healing stones' theory of Timothy Darvill and Geoffrey Wainwright, is covered in detail. This book provides a much needed and important guide to anyone visiting the major and a few minor megalithic sites in the Preseli region of West Wales, but it takes in a much wider compass than this. Packed with new original research, apart from telling you how to get to the major sites, and about the geometry of monuments, it will inform you on how sites relate to others, often over long distances, and how they are related to their landscapes and skyscapes.
