Book Megaliths from Antiquity

Download or read book Megaliths from Antiquity written by Timothy Darvill and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Antiquity Publications announces the publication of the third volume of Antiquity papers, drawing on the 75-year tradition of publishing articles of enduring value. The third volume of reprinted classic papers explores the ever intriguing theme of British and European megaliths. Thirty-six papers examine four principal themes on megalithic studies. The earliest monuments - the great tombs and dolmens - reveal the extent of megalithic variety. Papers range from Daniel's early studies of British dolmens to more recent debates; the perennial interest in Stonehenge and Avebury has figured prominently in Antiquity and is brought fully up to date. The presence of timber and earth circles as precursors or alternatives to megalithic structures show further variety in ancient monument building. The final section, Beyond the Megaliths, through studies of ancient engineering, archaeoastronomy and sensory archaeology demonstrates the abiding interest in interpretations of function and meaning in the ancient stones."--provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: David Corio has systematically photographed the megalithic sites of England and Wales with the eye of a great landscape photographer as well as with the passion of an explorer in the ruins of an ancient culture. These photographs go to the heart of prehistoric England and reveal a profound sense of 'place'. The sites are revealed with all the beauty that invited Romantic speculation from the seventeenth century onwards as well as the encroaching modern world of distant urban skylines and protective barriers. Lai Ngan's text distils the mythical narratives that arose around these extraordinary structures and places as well as pointing to the recent astronomical and mathematical research which suggests their remarkable function in the prehistoric calendar. The photographs point to the beginning of architecture itself in Britain, with the suggestion of both sacred and secular function, layered in the fabulous tales of popular imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hermetic tradition claims "As above, so below". Did the ancients mean that literally? Stars, Stones and Scholars shows that many ancient megalithic sites are not tombs, but are remnants of ancient local, regional and perhaps even larger Neolithic surveys of the Earth by Stone Age astronomy, with gigantic stones being placed as immovable survey markers. Circa 40 photographs, 240 drawings and 80 maps show how megaliths were carved and "sculpted" with figures and cupmarks (holes in the stones) to represent stars and constellations, long before the modern astrological Zodiac was known. Megalithic sites from England (Stonehenge), Wales (Paviland), Scotland (Clava Cairns), Ireland (Newgrange, Knowth), Germany (Externsteine), Benelux (Weris), France (Carnac), Italy (La Spezia), Malta (Tarxien), Greece, Turkey (Anatolia), Scandinavia (Tanum), the Baltic, Russia, the Near East, the Far East (China and Japan), Africa, Central and South America (Tikal, Maya, Aztecs), Oceania (Hawaii), The USA (Cahokia, Miami Circle, Clovis) and Canada (Peterborough Petroglyphs) are included in this fascinating book.

Book The Stones and the Stars

Download or read book The Stones and the Stars written by Duncan Lunan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are at least 48 identified prehistoric stone circles in Scotland. In truth, very little is known about the people who erected them, and ultimately about what the stone circles were for. Most stone circles are astronomically aligned, which has led to the modern debate about why the alignment was significant. The megaliths certainly represented an enormous co-operative effort, would at the very least have demonstrated power and wealth, and being set away from any dwellings probably served a ceremonial, or perhaps religious, purpose. Observations at the site of the stone circles, of solar, lunar, and stellar events, have already cast light on some of the questions about the construction and use of ancient megalithic observatories. In his capacity as manager of the Parks Department Astronomy Project, author Duncan Lunan designed and built the first astronomically aligned stone circle in Britain in over 3,000 years. 'The Stones and the Stars' examines the case for astronomical alignments of stone circles, and charts the development of a fascinating project with a strong scientific and historical background. The work was documented in detail by the artist and photographer Gavin Roberts, and this archive has been added to since - so an appropriate selection of illustrations will bring the project vividly to life.

Book The Megaliths of Northern Europe

Download or read book The Megaliths of Northern Europe written by Magdalena Midgley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North European megaliths are among the most enduring structures built in prehistory; they are imbued with symbolic meanings which embody physical and conceptual ideas about the nature of the world inhabited by the first Northern farmers. The Megaliths of Northern Europe provides a much needed up-to-date synthesis of the material available on these monuments, incorporating the results of recent research in Holland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. This research has brought to light new data on the construction of the megaliths and their role in the cultural landscape, and Magdalena Midgley offers a fascinating interpretation of the symbolism of megalithic tombs within the context of early farming communities. This wealth of new evidence suggests the Northern European megaliths were important foci in the wider north-west European context. The construction of dolmens and passage graves, using huge glacial boulders, demanded both great communal effort and considerable skill. In addition to this technical expertise the master builders also made use of their esoteric knowledge of rituals. This was expressed in the use of exotic building materials and special architectural features, and in the placement of tombs within the natural and cultural landscapes, creating new metaphors and images. Fully illustrated, this book will be of interest to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of European Prehistory, Archaeology and Prehistoric Anthropology, as well as architects who study ancient architecture and social anthropologists who study modern megaliths.

Book The Megalithic Monuments of Britain and Ireland

Download or read book The Megalithic Monuments of Britain and Ireland written by Christopher Scarre and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Stonehenge to Newgrange, one of the richest arrays of megalithic monuments in Europe is found in Britain and Ireland. Using massive stone blocks, timber posts and mounds of earth or chalk, the people of these islands built great monuments from the beginning of the Neolithic and the arrival of pottery and farming some 6000 years ago down into the Bronze Age. The number and sheer diversity of these structures is astonishing. Stone circles and chambered tombs, burial mounds and earthwork enclosures, henges and cursus monuments, all belong to the same general category of monumental prehistoric architecture. Tombs, sanctuaries, places of cult and of memory: these Neolithic monuments had numerous functions in prehistoric societies. Transforming the lanscape, such grand structures must have represented for their communities a particular way of responding to changing social and symbolic needs, whether processing the dead, gathering for ceremonies, or embellishing locations that were of sacred significance. Organized by geographical area this authoritative overview is ideal for traveller and student alike.

Book The Lives of Prehistoric Monuments in Iron Age Roman and Medieval Europe

Download or read book The Lives of Prehistoric Monuments in Iron Age Roman and Medieval Europe written by Marta Díaz-Guardamino and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the pervasive influence exerted by some prehistoric monuments on European social life over thousands of years, and reveals how they can act as a node linking people through time, possessing huge ideological and political significance. Through the advancement of theoretical approaches and scientific methodologies, archaeologists have been able to investigate how some of these monuments provide resources to negotiate memories, identities, and power and social relations throughout European history. The essays in this collection examine the life-histories of carefully chosen megalithic monuments, stelae and statue-menhirs, and rock art sites of various European and Mediterranean regions during the Iron Age and Roman and Medieval times. By focusing on the concrete interaction between people, monuments, and places, the volume offers an innovative outlook on a variety of debated issues. Prominent among these is the role of ancient remains in the creation, institutionalization, contestation, and negotiation of social identities and memories, as well as their relationship with political economy in early historic European societies. By contributing to current theoretical debates on materiality, landscape, and place-making, The Lives of Prehistoric Monuments in Iron Age, Roman, and Medieval Europe seeks to overcome disciplinary boundaries between prehistory and history, and highlight the long-term, genealogical nature of our engagement with the world.

Download or read book Hermeneutics of Megaliths written by Costas Maritsas and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermeneutics of Megaliths offers provocative and unique insights into the cultural interpretation of megaliths. While megalithic culture has been the subject of detailed study for a number of years, this book introduces a new cultural mode of interpretation that will help in gaining a greater understanding of this extremely important epoch of human history. As this volume shows, the necessity behind the creation of megaliths is a result of the transition from natural selection to civilization. It also emphasizes the original purpose of megalithic constructions, such as dolmens, menhirs, cromlechs, and effigy mounds, analysing and exploring popular existing hypotheses. In addition, certain megalithic structures are shown to be scenes of primordial theatrical performances, with the struggle for survival beeing replaced by the symbolic combat of dance. This book provides the reader with details of under-researched and lesser-known megaliths. It also explores the organic ties connecting megaliths’ origin, their history and their contemporary existence in various, sometimes rare, forms. The main theoretical concepts of the book are illustrated by means of well-known and new material from a number of different cultures, giving the reader the opportunity to view a wide range of interesting photographs from Machu Picchu, Bulgaria, Gobekli Tepe, Stonehenge, and Korea. As such, this book will serve as useful and fascinating reading material for anyone with an interest in the field of cultural studies.
