Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined gifted education teachers' and school counselors' perceptions of their roles and responsibilities in the support of the social and emotional needs of gifted students. In addition, participants were asked to identify ways they collaborate in order to support the social and emotional needs of gifted students. Instruments in the study included a survey developed by the researcher, which consisted of Likert scale and open-ended questions. Individual interviews were conducted with participants. Seven gifted education teachers and 7 school counselors from 3 suburban school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania completed the survey questions. Three gifted education teachers and 3 school counselors participated in individual interviews. The results of the study indicate that gifted education teachers and school counselors perceive the support of the social and emotional needs of gifted students to be part of their role and responsibilities, yet these professionals may or may not be specifically trained in the unique social and emotional needs of gifted students. Gifted education teachers defined their role with gifted students as both an academic and emotional advocate. School counselors described their role with gifted students to be similar to any other student they service. The participants in the study indicated that they collaborate in the support of gifted students as needed. In terms of support, participants cited small group and individual counseling for gifted students based on specific concerns and consultation with parents of gifted students. Both gifted education teachers and school counselors identified more purposeful and proactive collaboration among themselves and with the teaching staff as areas to be further developed.
