This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the outcome of about 30 years of research in the field of earthquake seismology in various parts of South Asia. It comprehensively deals with topics raning from plate tectonics to seismic waves in general. State-of-the-art techniques in earthquake location/relocation, fault plane solution, waveform inversion, seismic tomography, fractals etc. are discussed, and the results are interpreted in terms of seismic source processes in the region.

Book Suture Zones Seismic Wave Propagation and Tectonics of Central Asia

Download or read book Suture Zones Seismic Wave Propagation and Tectonics of Central Asia written by A. J. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the results of a number of projects are summarized: An approximate method for calculating the reflection and transmission coefficients of obliquely incident Rayleigh waves across two welded quarter-spaces is outlined; Group velocities of fundamental mode Rayleigh and Love waves, with paths traversing the Tibetan Plateau, were used to determine that the Tibetan Plateau has a 70 km thick crust, with a low velocity zone at an intermediate level within the crust; A zone of large, negative residuals for P-wave arrivals exists in northern New York State. Surface-wave amplitude spectra constrained by body-wave first motions are sufficient to determine focal mechanisms for some moderate-sized earthquakes along the Mid-Atlantic ridge; Microseismicity and geological evidences were used to model the current tectonic processes of the Hazara district in northern Pakistan; The historical and modern seismicity of a portion of south-central Asia was compiled and critically reviewed to delineate large-scale seismotectonic trends; and Seismic, volcanic, and plate tectonic data indicate the Makran region of southern Pakistan is an active subduction zone.

Book Tectonic Evolution Collision and Seismicity of Southwest Asia

Download or read book Tectonic Evolution Collision and Seismicity of Southwest Asia written by Rasoul Sorkhabi and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southwest Asia is one of the most remarkable regions on Earth in terms of active faulting and folding, large-magnitude earthquakes, volcanic landscapes, petroliferous foreland basins, historical civilizations as well as geologic outcrops that display the protracted and complex 540 m.y. stratigraphic record of Earth's Phanerozoic Era. Emerged from the birth and demise of the Paleo-Tethys and Neo-Tethys oceans, southwest Asia is currently the locus of ongoing tectonic collision between the Eurasia-Arabia continental plates. The region is characterized by the high plateaus of Iran and Anatolia fringed by the lofty ranges of Zagros, Alborz, Caucasus, Taurus, and Pontic mountains; the region also includes the strategic marine domains of the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Caspian, and Mediterranean. This 19-chapter volume, published in honor of Manuel Berberian, a preeminent geologist from the region, brings together a wealth of new data, analyses, and frontier research on the geologic evolution, collisional tectonics, active deformation, and historical and modern seismicity of key areas in southwest Asia.

Book Rockslides and Rock Avalanches of Central Asia

Download or read book Rockslides and Rock Avalanches of Central Asia written by Alexander Strom and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rockslides and Rock Avalanches of Central Asia: Distribution, Impacts, and Hazard Assessment arms scientists with an inclusive and specialized reference for future studies of large-scale bedrock landslides in Central Asia, a phenomenon that poses a major threat to local communities, infrastructure and industrial facilities. The book covers the Dzungaria, Tien Shan, and Pamir mountain systems that are characterized by arid climates and scarce forestation, and is an ideal reference for scientists searching for data that accurately summarizes bedrock landslides through the analyses of a multitude of case studies that have applications in comparable, global scenarios. Through its relatively low precipitation and good preservation of minor geomorphic features, particularly those formed by past landslides, this region provides opportunities for detailed study of the internal structure of landslide bodies. Summarizes the present-day knowledge of bedrock landslide distribution in the Dzungaria, Tien Shan and Pamir mountains Describes case studies illustrating both general characteristics of large bedrock landslides and other specific features, allowing comparative analysis of numerous case studies Presents the classification of bedrock landslides and related models based on deposits, morphology and internal structures that can be applied to global locations
