Book excerpt: The time; 11 o'clock. The date; November 11. 11, 11, 11. It wasn't as if there was a war that had been won... Tommy knew it wasn't over - a ceasefire had been called, yet who were the winners? He knew he would be back - it was just a matter of time... They had all been told, time and again, that they'd fought for their 'King and Country' in return for a Land Fit for Heroes. A Land Fit for Heroes - what exactly was this supposed to mean? Had things really changed? He, along with thousands of others, flooded home from the trenches to civilian life, from a hidden world of suffering to being expected to fit straight back into normal life. Peter Gill has triumphed by encapsulating the life of Tommy Atkins, a soldier like many other soldiers, dedicated to playing a part in fighting for their country.

Book excerpt: Tommy Atkins is the English soldier, who joking broke the cavalry of France at Minden, who singing marched with the Great Duke to the Danube, who grumbling shattered Napoleon's dreams at Waterloo, who sweating in his red coat tramped back and forth across Indis, who kept his six-rounds-to-the-minute at Mons, and who died in the mud at Passchendaele, the sands of the Western Desert, and the jungles of Burma. If his name has been eclipsed by his more illustrious commanders - Cromwell, Marlborough, Moore, Wolfe, Wellington, Allenby, Slim - they at least will accord him his rightful place beside them. They knew his worth. Tommy Atkins is his story - the story of this most versatile, most adaptable, most un-military soldier.

Book Meeting Without Knowing it

Download or read book Meeting Without Knowing it written by Alexander Bubb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting Without Knowing It compares Rudyard Kipling and W.B. Yeats in the formative phase of their careers, from their births in 1865 up to 1903. The argument consists of parallel readings wed to a biographic structure. Reading the two poets in parallel often yields remarkable discursive echoes. For example, both men were similarly preoccupied with the visual arts, with heroism, with folklore, balladry and the demotic voice. Both struck vatic postures, and made bids for public authority premised on an appeal to what they considered the "mythopoeic" impulse in fin de siecle culture. Meeting Without Knowing It dentifies these mutual echoes in their poetry and political rhetoric, before charting them against intersections in their lives. Kipling and Yeats were, for much of their careers, irreconcilable political enemies. However, a cross-reading of the two poets' bardic ambitions, heroic tropes, and interpretations of history reveals that, to achieve their opposed political ends, they frequently partook of a common discourse. Supplementing this analysis with biographical context, we can trace these shared concerns to their late nineteenth century artistic upbringing, and to the closely linked social circles that they inhabited in fin de siecle London. It is, in fact, their very mutuality during the 1890s which lent rancor to their ideological division after the Boer War. In turn, acrimony and denunciation only served to bind together all the more intimately, in an argumentative spiral of revolving discourses, two men who were often proximate but who actually met only in cartoons and satirical gossip.

Book excerpt: The Carnacki Institute is all about ghosts - or at least, keeping them under control. Their latest assignment sees JC and the team sent to a small country village, site of a famously haunted inn. At first, JC thinks that the spirits in the King's Arms are more the stuff of urban legend than anything that needs the Ghost Finders' expertise. But one story rings true: the tale of a traveller trapped in the inn by an unusual thunderstorm. She retired to her room for the night - and vanished. Trapped by an unusual thunderstorm - like the one that begins raging outside shortly after they arrive . . . As the team investigates, they are forced, one by one, to face some hard truths about themselves, their relationships and the haunting itself - truths that may push Happy Jack over the edge into the madness he has always feared . . . Spirits from Beyond is the fourth title in New York Times bestselling author Simon R. Green's Ghost Finders series.
