Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of 2017 by NPR and GQ Joining the ranks of the classics Please Kill Me, Our Band Could Be Your Life, and Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, an intriguing oral history of the post-9/11 decline of the old-guard music industry and rebirth of the New York rock scene, led by a group of iconoclastic rock bands. In the second half of the twentieth-century New York was the source of new sounds, including the Greenwich Village folk scene, punk and new wave, and hip-hop. But as the end of the millennium neared, cutting-edge bands began emerging from Seattle, Austin, and London, pushing New York further from the epicenter. The behemoth music industry, too, found itself in free fall, under siege from technology. Then 9/11/2001 plunged the country into a state of uncertainty and war—and a dozen New York City bands that had been honing their sound and style in relative obscurity suddenly became symbols of glamour for a young, web-savvy, forward-looking generation in need of an anthem. Meet Me in the Bathroom charts the transformation of the New York music scene in the first decade of the 2000s, the bands behind it—including The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem, Interpol, and Vampire Weekend—and the cultural forces that shaped it, from the Internet to a booming real estate market that forced artists out of the Lower East Side to Williamsburg. Drawing on 200 original interviews with James Murphy, Julian Casablancas, Karen O, Ezra Koenig, and many others musicians, artists, journalists, bloggers, photographers, managers, music executives, groupies, models, movie stars, and DJs who lived through this explosive time, journalist Lizzy Goodman offers a fascinating portrait of a time and a place that gave birth to a new era in modern rock-and-roll.

Download or read book Meet Me in the Morning written by Patty Howard and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So much of our lives is influenced by how we see God. For author Patty Howard, these words began a two-and-a-half-year journey of listening to God every morning with the expectation that He would speak. When God speaks, He meets us where we are and shows us who we are. Sometimes we are invited to share what we hear. With social media as her pulpit and her friends as her congregation, Howard shared what God had given her every day. The Holy Spirit did the rest. In Meet Me in the Morning, she has gathered those meditations, originally posted on social media, and compiled them into a devotional, mostly in the order and in the form they originally appeared. May these daily meditations encourage you, inspire you, convict you, and convince you that God sees you, knows you, and loves you beyond measure. This daily devotional shows how scripture applies to real life, in real time, and invites you to carry the ideas and insights beyond the page and into your daily life.
Download or read book Meet Me written by Rafika Alami and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note to the Reader This is just a quick note to the reader. Obviously if you bought my book then you enjoy poetry. When I began writing poetry I was a 13 year old eighth grader. I had never ever attempted writing a poem before that. I guess the way that I started with poetry was bottling everything inside me that I had to let it out somehow. So I ended up writing about it. I didn't notice that it had taken the form of a poem until halfway through it. To me it sounded so much like a poem. I showed it to my friend and she asked me when I took poetry lessons. Funny thing is that I never took poetry lessons. It just came out of me. I got encouraged so I began to write down everything that came to my mind. Unfortunately I was young, so most of my poems were about love and pain. I knew I could use my poem skills to write inspirational and better poems than just love, but I never took that into consideration. It was only until this year that I started to wise up. I began writing about inspirational topics. I got so happy when I wrote my first uplifting poem. It was like lifting a burden off my shoulders. Everything that is written in this book is meant with all good means. Some people say it's a talent, some people say that it's a gift. Well whatever it is, I want to share it with you. I'm a 14 year old tenth grader (sophomore) now and I know I'm young. I'm sure you'll like my poetry, and if you don't just keep in mind that I'm still very young. I respect your opinion. I'm still trying to get better. I'm not perfect. I really hope you enjoy the book!
Download or read book Meet Me Here at Dawn written by Sophie Klahr and published by YesYes Books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Women's Studies. Eroticism tinged with elegy, gratitude knit with doubt; MEET ME HERE AT DAWN contains an unmistakably open voice. Sophie Klahr's debut poetry collection careens from hunger to hunger. With lyric energy and narrative determination, the poems are missives sent back from a threshold, chronicling disease, the unspoken pains of family, the fabric of an extra-marital affair. "What aperture makes a woman?" Klahr asks in "One Slaughter." In MEET ME HERE AT DAWN, even the unanswerable is unfaltering, every question brightly wrought and necessary. "Sophie Klahr moves through the chambers of the mind and heart like an expert escape artist, keys hidden in the body's coverts are revealed in a 'rush of knowing, ' the body's 'first breaking and entering' that feels both clandestine and disclosive. This is poetry of immense vulnerability and fierce mettle; determined, convincing and heroically alive with courage of every kind."--D.A. Powell

In Meet Me in the Trunk, Yvonne shares important lessons on how she learned to cast aside her own judgment and depend on God alone. Facing day-to-day stresses at work, marriage difficulties, children, grandchildren, and relationships, Yvonne visited the trunk to let God minister to her anxious and wounded spirit. God never failed her, giving her messages to use for each situation. She offers thought-provoking questions that challenge you to look deep inside your heart for the answers. Download or read book Meet Me at Fountain Park written by Mindy Killgrove and published by Mindy Killgrove. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Falling in love is a bit like running a race--it's not easy for anyone. Meet Me at Fountain Park Everything changes, or at least that’s what they say. For Missy Lawrence, this old adage just doesn’t fit. Her life has come to an unsolicited standstill. Her job as a news reporter for WSTA-Charlotte is miraculously mundane and her love life is practically non-existent. Even though she tries, she can’t seem to pull herself out of this rut. While she’s stuck in between, all of her friends are finding themselves in a flurry of activities: Brooklyn’s moving in with Duke, Benson and Jack are heading across the country in search of stardom, and Adair is preparing to walk down the aisle and wed the man of her dreams. As her social engagements pile up, she notices that her calendar has reached maximum capacity because of her friends and their obligations. Missy now realizes that she is going to have to make a huge decision: Will she stay in the past or will she join her capricious pals and take a leap of her own? Reader Reviews: Mindy Killgrove builds the story of a modern young woman and her group of friends in this second novel in the Missy Lawrence Trilogy: Meet Me at Fountain Park. With a delicious blend of humor, sex appeal, and naivety, Killgrove takes the reader inside the eyes of the protagonist and allows them to ponder some of life’s biggest questions. This novel is the perfect beach blanket read and can be devoured on one sunny afternoon. Again, Missy Lawrence and her band of fabulous friends drew me in and entertained me throughout this entire second installment of Killgrove's Missy Lawrence Trilogy. I felt her characters were so accessible, and the ups and downs they found themselves in throughout the work so relatable, that I'm really looking forward to her third installment (although I will be sad when there isn't any new material). This was such a great sophomoric release that I highly recommend it to all would-be Missy Lawrence fans!

Here you will read how the Body of Christ, which includes both Jews and non-Jews (Arabs/Palestinians) is growing in size and unity in the Holy Land today despite the politics and conflict that divide these two peoples. Reconciliation in the Middle East is fraught with danger and seemingly impossible challenges. However, reconciliation is possible through the Cross, no matter how powerful the childhood indoctrination or how great the social pressure. -This inspirational, heart-warming volume is a must for all who champion reconciliation in our Messiah.- Susan Perlman, Jews for Jesus

Download or read book Meet Me with Your Black Drawers On written by Jeannie Cheatham and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A breezy, light, and utterly charming tale of a musician’s life with all the ups-and-downs and turns-and-twists that are a part of those of us in jazz.” —Marian McPartland, jazz legend and host of the award-winning Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz A pianist, singer, songwriter, and co-leader of the Sweet Baby Blues Band, Jeannie Cheatham has played and sung with many of the greats in blues and jazz—T-Bone Walker, Dinah Washington, Cab Callaway, Joe Williams, Al Hibbler, Odetta, and Jimmy Witherspoon. Cheatham toured with Big Mama Thornton off and on for ten years and was featured with Thornton and Sippie Wallace in the award-winning PBS documentary Three Generations of the Blues. Cheatham’s signature song, “Meet Me with Your Black Drawers On” is a staple in jazz and blues clubs across America and in Europe, Africa, and Japan. In this delightfully frank autobiography, Jeannie Cheatham recalls a life that has been as exuberant, virtuous, wild, and truthful as her music. She begins in Akron, Ohio, where she grew up in a vibrant multiethnic neighborhood surrounded by a family of strong women. From those roots, she launched a musical career that took her from the Midwest to California, doing time along the way everywhere from a jail cell in Dayton, Ohio, where she was innocently caught in a police raid, to the University of Wisconsin-Madison—where she and Jimmy Cheatham taught music. Cheatham writes of a life spent fighting racism and sexism, of rage and resolve, misery and miracles, betrayals and triumphs, of faith almost lost in dark places, but mysteriously regained in a flash of light. Cheatham’s autobiography is also the story of her fifty-years-and-counting love affair and musical collaboration with her husband and band partner, Jimmy Cheatham.
