Book Meet Me at My Locker

Book excerpt: The high school is overcrowed; and while waiting for the new building to be completed, the administration--specifically Mr. Hammermocker--installs twelve lockers in a cluttered, long-neglected alcove that has formerly been used only as a storage space. Here, amid a seventy-year accumulation of piled-up classroom refuse, are assigned six boys and six girls--or six couples, as the girls are quick to note. A large part of the play is concerned with the way in which the girls divide the boys among themselves and then proceed to form a club slanted toward a furthering of that blissful contemporary state known as "going steady." Grainger Kantwell (Kant), who feels alienated from the others because of a series of unpleasant experiences brought about by his father's wealth, is something of a problem to the girls. So they "assign" Kant to Phyllis Hughes, who has been out of public school since the eight grade and is now returning to complete her senior year. They say, "Phyl has been out of touch with things so long she won't know how Kant is. She'll remember him as he was before--when he was all right." The more serious part of the play is concerned with the relationship that develops between Phyllis and Kant, a relationship that reaches its climax when some money disappears from Ida's locker, and circumstances indicate that Kant is a thief. The genuine regret expressed by the other students when they discover that their suspicions are unfounded brings Kant to realize that he is not the outcast he thought himself to be. The turn of events also brings new insight to Phyllis, enabling her to understand that she is not so "differnt" from the others as she had thought. As she sums matters up, "I have an idea now that everyone in the world is pretty much alike--in most things. You, too, Kant." Kant enthusiastically agrees; the Club's symbolic ritual is solemnized once more, and the "membership drive" of the Hammermocker Hammerlockers is dramaticallt completed

To my Science teacher Mr. Mitchell, I was nothing but a troublemaker and a reject basically. I once heard this Latin proverb ... “Amore Vincint Omina” translated it means “Love Conquers All” now like any other girl I would believe this to be true wouldn’t you? When you find it you’re life changes; complete happiness I would have called it but then you find out some love comes with deceit and betrayal. I would have given up on the notion of love but a glimmer of hope taught me there’s always someone in the dark who will lead you into the light. So here my tale begins…

Book Writing from Within The Next Generation

Download or read book Writing from Within The Next Generation written by Bernard Selling and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody has something to say. In an age when Twitter, blogs, and Tumblrs give millions the chance to write whatever is on their minds, it seems that we're finding plenty of avenues in which to share it. How, then, do we write what is worth saying? How do we record our important memories so they'll be remembered? How do we tell our personal stories the way they deserve to be told? In keeping with successful earlier editions of Writing from Within, Selling has stressed the idea that personal writing is a means to personal understanding. Learning to write well starts with the subjects we know the best—ourselves. To write life stories, writers explore vivid memories and re-engage with the perspectives of their younger selves. They learn to harness their inner critics and deal with fear. They use their creative drive to remember details from their most significant memories. The process of life story writing is as much one of self-discovery as it is one of nostalgia. These emotional connections to memories provide the backbone for Selling's writing instruction. In this 25th anniversary edition of Writing from Within, the original lessons of life story writing are included and significantly expanded upon. Readers are given guidance on finding their earliest memories and on remembering details vividly. Writing instruction is offered to accompany this process and ensure that readers' life stories are full of clear, accurate memories. The core focus of the book is on unlocking memories and writing them as life stories. However, this Anniversary edition also provides substantial new material on: Story pacing techniques Strategies for subtly adding exposition and denouement Revealing and unraveling character Writing stories within stories Developing unique voices within the same story Researching and writing family histories Expanding life story writing into novels or screenplays Advanced steps like creating visual motifs, employing sub-text, and separating the writer from the central character Draft samples will show readers how their life stories will grow using the Writing from Within method. Excerpts from past students' life stories show the potential of the method. Personal notes to readers keep them on track and their goals in perspective. Writing from Within: The Next Generation invites readers to find their voices and helps them along the way to doing so. As much a tool for personal reflection as a guide to writing instruction, the book represents a comprehensive discussion of the creative process. Writers, new and old, will write with more skill, understand themselves and their characters better, and be able to turn their life experiences into art. So, learn to harness your inner critic. Construct your own writing process. Open the door to your past. Give the characters voices. Breathe some life into your story and leave something so future generations can get to know you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherman Alexie meets William Gibson. Louise Erdrich meets Franz Kafka. Leslie Marmon Silko meets Philip K. Dick. However you might want to put it, this is Native American fiction in a whole new world. A surrealistic revisiting of the Cherokee Removal, Riding the Trail of Tears takes us to north Georgia in the near future, into a virtual-reality tourist compound where customers ride the Trail of Tears, and into the world of Tallulah Wilson, a Cherokee woman who works there. When several tourists lose consciousness inside the ride, employees and customers at the compound come to believe, naturally, that a terrorist attack is imminent. Little does Tallulah know that Cherokee Little People have taken up residence in the virtual world and fully intend to change the ride’s programming to suit their own point of view. Told by a narrator who knows all but can hardly be trusted, in a story reflecting generations of experience while recalling the events in a single day of Tallulah’s life, this funny and poignant tale revises American history even as it offers a new way of thinking, both virtual and very real, about the past for both Native Americans and their Anglo counterparts.

Download or read book The Twain Does Meet written by Elaine L. Orr and published by Elaine Orr. This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Twain Does Meet" is a between-the-numbers book in the Jolie Gentil series, and while there are joys and problems to discover it's not a traditional cozy mystery. In book 10 (The Unexpected Resolution) Jolie solves a murder, she and Scoobie get married, and they gain a new family member--Scoobie's much-younger half-brother. Book 11 (Underground in Ocean Alley) takes place a few years later, and mystery solving is accompanied by their three-year old twins. I promised readers they would have the story of the twins' birth -- an anything-but-calm event -- but it didn't seem right to mix it with a murder. So, we have a 33,000 word novella that features laughs and angst with the Ocean Alley crew and more than a few surprises. A fun read with familiar characters.
