Book excerpt: 'In the summer of 1930 a cricketing machine, by the name of Donald Bradman, played havoc around the county grounds of England, pulverising the finest bowlers in the land, shattering records left, right and centre, and making a tour debut the like of which will surely never be seen again.' WH Ferguson, scorer for the Australians. Comprehensively researched, compelling and immensely readable, Don Bradman is the story of how the 'boy from Bowral' became one of Australia's most remarkable sporting heroes, inspiring our nation during the dark days of the Depression, the Second World War and beyond with world-record breaking scores and sensational innings - and establishing a reputation that endures to the present day. Based on exclusive interviews with Bradman himself, Perry's biography of the man who came to be known simply as The Don was widely acclaimed on first publication and reveals how his success was based on a crucial mixture of determination, ambition - and that extraordinary talent which was often described simply as 'genius'.

Book excerpt: Some of Australia's best-known cricketers relive their childhood summers of playing cricket in their backyards. Australia has dominated test cricket over the last 130 years. But it's not the formal cricket academies or high-end coaching that are responsible for the Australian cricket team's winning ways. the backyard has been the real academy of Australian cricket. Don Bradman's unique grip, stance and backlift all evolved in response to the pace at which the golf ball rebounded off the tank stand in his backyard games. Greg Chappell's trademark flick off the hip shot was invented on his backyard wicket where the best scoring opportunities lay on the leg side. Alan Davidson bowled accurately because he had to. If he missed the stumps on his home-made pitch, he had to chase the ball down the hill into the scrub. Doug Walters played spin with ease because his ant-bed backyard pitch spun like a top. Neil Harvey's immaculate footwork came from playing balls that darted viciously off the cobblestones in his back lane. this collection of cricketers and the stories of the backyards that made them gets to the heart and soul of their game. Facing up to hostile brothers on dodgy pitches created a love of competition and developed the skills and the toughness that took them to the top in test cricket.

Book Don Bradman

Download or read book Don Bradman written by Adam Whitaker and published by Methuen Pub Limited. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a celebration of Australia's sporting hero, and one of the most astonishing sportsmen of all time. Don Bradman made his debut in first-class cricket in Adelaide on December 16, 1927, playing for New South Wales against South Australia. He was then 19 years of age. In the 10 years that followed, Bradman rewrote batting records. He played 51 Test innings and scored 4,659 runs for an average of 97. He also played another 153 first class innings, scoring 11,926 runs for an average of 90. His performance was fantastic in every meaning of the word. In those 10 years there were 61 scores of 100 or more, including the record Test score of 334 against England at Headingley in 1930. As captain of Australia, Bradman also inspired his team to an historic victory against "Gubby" Allen's England in the 1936-37 Ashes series. This small, elegant book tells the story of Bradman's early years in a number of essays, observations, and articles by celebrated cricket writers including Neville Cardus, Douglas Jardine, and C. L. R. James, and, of course, Wisden. It also reproduces Bradman's scorecards and statistics for major games, and has an essay and foreword by Piers Morgan, who was a friend and correspondent of Bradman in the years prior to his death in 2001.

Book Private Don

Download or read book Private Don written by Christine Wallace and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Have you ever stopped to think how much the hurly burly and turmoil of cricket have taken out of me in the last 40 years?' He was the greatest cricketer the world has ever known. He was also one of the greatest enigmas. Sir Donald Bradman was a fiercely private man, but from 1953 to 1977 he faithfully maintained a lively correspondence with his close friend and confidant Rohan Rivett, the charismatic editor of The News in Adelaide. The Private Don is an anatomy of the friendship between these two remarkable men - a friendship defined by cricket and by family. Through their feisty exchanges on the game, their thoughts on the media and world affairs, their closely argued opinions on investments, their touching mutual support on personal matters and, always, their rare and treasured meetings over bottles of red, a side to Bradman is revealed that Australia has never seen before. Compulsory reading for cricket fans as well as lovers of biography, this is an outstanding portrait of the price of fame, the joys of friendship, and the preoccupations of an extraordinary yet very ordinary man.
