Book excerpt: Ellen Franck isn't in love with Big Bird. After all, he's a big yellow Sesame Street character -- and she's an intelligent single woman with a fabulous job. On the other hand, Big Bird is looking like a better candidate for fatherhood every day: he's tall, affectionate, and steadily employed. And right now, for Ellen, thirty-five years old and dying to have a baby, almost any father will do. In her hilarious and heartbreaking new novel, Laura Zigman, bestselling author of Animal Husbandry, explores what happens when the life we've chosen isn't that life we expected it to be. And at this point Ellen Franck is rethinking all her choices. Mired in a relationship with a man who is better at brooding than breeding, sister to a woman who can't seem to stop having babies, and working under a boss who is about to have the baby shower of the decade, Ellen knows the path to motherhood is clear. All she has to do is leave her relationship, horrify her family, find an anonymous father, and become independently wealthy. Piece of cake.

  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book East is a Big Bird written by Thomas GLADWIN and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puluwat Atoll in Micronesia, with a population of only a few hundred proud seafaring people, can fulfill anyone's romantic daydream of the South Seas. Thomas Gladwin has written a beautiful and perceptive book which describes the complex navigational systems of the Puluwat natives, yet has done so principally to provide new insights into the effects of poverty in Western cultures. The cognitive system which enables the Puluwatans to sail their canoes without instruments over trackless expanses of the Pacific Ocean is sophisticated and complex, yet the Puluwat native would score low on a standardized intelligence test. The author relates this discrepancy between performance and measured abilities to the educational problems of disadvantaged children. He presents his arguments simply and clearly, with sensitive and detailed descriptions and many excellent illustrations. His book will appeal to anthropologists, psychologists, and sailing enthusiasts alike.

This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring message for all ages: Find your inner bird. If you’re looking for wisdom and joy in your life, go straight to Sesame Street and heed the words of its most beloved and profound resident, Caroll Spinney, who has spent the past thirty-four years in a bird costume (and a trash can) as Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. Three decades inside a giant puppet have taught Spinney a valuable and surprising lesson: Being a bird can make you a better person. In The Wisdom of Big Bird, the living legend of Sesame Street describes how we can all find our inner bird (or grouch). Each chapter illustrates a piece of useful wisdom Spinney has gleaned from a career in feathers. The lessons Big Bird teaches children every day on Sesame Street are the same ones that have brought Spinney success and satisfaction in his own life. Warm, witty, and affirming, Caroll Spinney’s memoir proves that being a bird can make you a better and happier person. “Every day on Sesame Street, we strive to give our innocent young audience the basis of a lifelong education. It is no accident that spending the past thirty-four years in the Bird suit teaching these lessons to others has taught me a few things, too.”—from The Wisdom of Big Bird (and the Dark Genius of Oscar the Grouch)

Book excerpt: Sesame Street, the most trusted name in preschool education, offers a complete, user-friendly guide to help parents prepare their children, ages 2-5, for academic, physical, and social success. For the past 50 years, Sesame Street has stood at the forefront of child development, stimulating and nurturing the minds of preschoolers not only through the iconic TV show, but also through books, games, mobile apps, and community engagement initiatives. With Ready for School!, Senior VP of Curriculum and Content at Sesame Workshop Dr. Rosemarie Truglio shares all the research-based, curriculum-directed school readiness skills that have made Sesame Street the preeminent children's TV program, and that every parent needs in order to get their preschooler ready for lifelong learning. Each of the book's eight chapters focuses on a key area: language, literacy, math, science, logic & reasoning, social & emotional development, healthy habits, and the arts. An essential dynamic of Ready for School! is its emphasis on the importance of play in a child's learning process. To respond to that need, dozens of "Play & Learn" activities are included to aid parents in educating their children: at the kitchen table, on the bus, in the park, or in the preschool classroom while playing together. In addition, the book recommends scores of hints, tips, ideas for useful products, and deep-dives on more complex topics for parents, all designed to make preparing young kids for school easy and joyful.

Book excerpt: Rick O'Grady returned to his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida with his new Harvard Law degree, eager to pass the Florida Bar and join his father's law firm. The O'Shea Family Trust Fund, originally established by the wealthy Henry M. Flagler in 1897, was funded annually by Flagler's company, Florida East Coast Railway (FECR), to the oldest living namesake of Patrick Michael O'Shea. In 1976, the Trust had been declared invalid by the Florida Supreme Court, upon the litigation of the chairman of FECR, Edward Ball, brother-in-law of the now-deceased millionaire, Alfred DuPont, and then reputed to be the most powerful man in Florida.Rick's goal, once he passed the Bar, was to find the means to have this judgment reversed and restore the annual payment to his family Trust Fund. At the age of 26, this tall, handsome new graduate was not considered a threat by Mr. Ball. After Rick settled into his new apartment, he was awakened by an enormous explosion near his new home. The FECR Broward Yard had been blown up, raising fears that the multi-year battle between Ball and his employees over wages had been renewed, despite recent court decisions and jail terms to the contrary. Investigations soon proved that the O'Shea family was not involved, but rather an unidentified foreign national was threatening to purchase the FECR or destroy it if refused. In the interim, the eightieth birthday party of Rick's grandfather, Patrick Michael O'Shea, Junior, gave Rick an opportunity to meet the beautiful Chandra Jones, a popular television news reporter and prominent young African-American personality. She invited him to lunch the following week, where she revealed her research on the O'Shea family and sought his cooperation in pursuing their joint interests in legal research on the dispute with FECR. He agreed, and the two young people began a research quest starting with local newspaper files and continuing into other cities in pursuit of the mysterious rich foreigner behind a terrorist plot to blow up the centers of five large American cities.

Book Sesame Street

    Book Details:
  • Author : Helle Strandgaard Jensen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2023
  • ISBN : 0197554156
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Sesame Street written by Helle Strandgaard Jensen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sesame Street: A Transnational History, author Helle Strandgaard Jensen tells the story of how the American television show became a global brand. Jensen argues that because the show's domestic production was not financially viable from the beginning, Sesame Street became a commodity that its producers assertively marketed all over the world. Sesame Street: A Transnational History combines archival research from seven countries, bolstering an insightful analysis of how local reception and rejection of the show related to the global sales strategies and American ideals it was built upon. Contrary to the producers' oft-publicized claims of Sesame Street's universality, the show was heavily shaped by a fixed set of assumptions about childhood, education, and commercial entertainment. This made sales difficult as Sesame Street met both skepticism and direct hostility from foreign television producers who did not share these ideals. Drawing on insights from new histories about childhood, education, and transnational media, the book lays bare a cultural clash of international proportions rooted in divergent approaches to children's television. In doing so, it provides a reflective backdrop to the many ongoing debates about children's media. In contrasting the positive receptions and renunciations of Sesame Street, Jensen demonstrates that it was only after a substantial rethinking of Sesame Street's aims and business model that this program ended up on numerous broadcasting schedules by the mid-1970s. Along the way, this rethinking and the constant negotiations with potential international buyers created and shaped the business and corporate brand that paved the way for the Sesame Street we know today.
