Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, though fiction, follows an authentic timeline as it tells the story of the two remarkable grandchildren of Rao Duda, Meera, and Jaimal. Meera was a gifted child, recognized for her intellectual brilliance and piety from her childhood. Her devotion to Lord Krishna was intense and never changed, even though she was married to Bhojraj, the son of Maharana Sanga. The book traces her life until she reaches Dwarka and is finally absorbed by her lord. Jaimal, on the other hand, remained constantly at war, struggling to preserve his kingdom against powerful forces ranged against it. The constant struggle against Marwar finally leads to the destruction of Merta with the curtain coming down with Jaimal indomitably leading the defense of Chittor against Akbar. Teeming with characters well known in history, the book offers a slice of it in painful though valorous detail. Despite their tragedy, the Mertias are a force to reckon with but as the Authors put it, in the 16th Century they created their own Camelot which rose and fell within three generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Meera Vs Meera’ is a translation of a wellreceived book ‘Pachrang Chola Pahar Sakhi Ri’ in Hindi. For centuries, the masses regarded Meera’s poetry as a medium of expression of their feelings and emotions. Meera’s poetry, though interpreted in multiple ways has dwarfed, weakened and gulfed her persona. The religious discourses and narratives festered with her religious aspect, whereas the European historians during the colonial period in India focussed on elements of love, romance and mystery in Meera’s life. The Marxist critics and neo-feminist activists highlighted Meera’s narratives related to her courage and self-determination, which she exhibited during her times. In this process the human aspects of Meera were completely side-lined which is far more evident from her poetry. Meera is a feudal, rebel, devotee, poet and much more. She led an eventful human life. She never felt alienated or free from womanly passions and was the creation of the society she lived in. Meera believed ‘Soney kaat na lagey’ (Gold never rusts…). In ‘Meera Vs Meera’ an attempt is made to conserve the ‘real self ’ of Meera, left over by the multiple interpretations through the centuries.

Book excerpt: Illustrations: 1 B/w Illustration Description: Mira Bai belonged to the royal family of the Ranas of Mewara and was a staunch devotee of Krishna, worshipping him in the madhurya bhava of Vaishnavism. In the earlier part of her life she was ill-treated by her brother-in-law who even tried various means to kill her, but Krishna was ever her protector. Fed up, she went away to Merata, her maternal home and from there to Vrindavana and then to Dvaraka, where according to traditional belief, she merged with the image of Krishna. Mira's verses have a musical ring and a number of them have been recorded on discs and cassettes. There have been recessions of her padas. This English verse translation of eighty-one of them aims at giving the best of these. It is hoped that Mira's verses, along with the detailed introduction giving her life and times and her art, will create renewed interest in this renowned saint-poet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern fable of rural India narrated against the backdrop of freedom struggle. It is a masterly satire on those who live by the lure of gold. The characters are introduced one by one in a leisurely manner, and we meet among them a pretty girl, a wandering minstrel and a luxuriously mustachioed seth. Skilfully blending fable and reality it delves deep into the human mind. The plot centres around a touchstone given to Meera by her sagacious grandfather. It is believed that the amulet would enable Meera to turn copper into gold, provided she acts kindly as a natural and spontaneous expression of herself. ‘Wearing it on your person, if you do an act of kindness, real kindness, then all copper on your body will turn to gold... parted from your arm, the touchstone will be dead, a worthless pebble.’ It is hugely entertaining tale, yet it disturbs. It disturbs as a warning and as a prophecy.
