Download or read book Marine Biodiversity of Costa Rica Central America written by Ingo S. Wehrtmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-28 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life began in the sea, and even today most of the deep diversity of the planet is marine. This is often forgotten, especially in tropical countries like Costa Rica, renowned for their rain forests and the multitude of life forms found therein. Thus this book focusing on marine diversity of Costa Rica is particularly welcome. How many marine species are there in Costa Rica? The authors report a total of 6,777 species, or 3. 5% of the world’s total. Yet the vast majority of marine species have yet to be formally described. Recent estimates of the numbers of species on coral reefs range from 1–9 million, so that the true number of marine species in Costa Rica is certainly far higher. In some groups the numbers are likely to be vastly higher because to date they have been so little studied. Only one species of nematode is reported, despite the fact that it has been said that nematodes are the most diverse of all marine groups. In better studied groups such as mollusks and crustaceans, reported numbers are in the thousands, but even in these groups many species remain to be described. Indeed the task of describing marine species is daunting – if there really are about 9 million marine species and Costa Rica has 3. 5% of them, then the total number would be over 300,000. Clearly, so much remains to be done that new approaches are needed. Genetic methods have en- mous promise in this regard.

Download or read book World Atlas of Jellyfish written by Gerhard Jarms and published by Dölling und Galitz Verlag. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The »World Atlas of Jellyfish« presents in a lavishly illustrated multi-author compendium the more than 260 species of medusae (Scyphomedusae and Cubomedusae) described so far. The general, first part deals with their structure, complex life cycles and rare fossil records. But it also details on collection, cultivation and fishery methods, even gives hints for photography and cooking recipes. Additionally, it covers the nature of medusae venoms, the effects and treatment of their stings. The second part gives concise systematic descriptions of all jellyfish species and their developmental stages known so far. Numerous illustrations, distribution maps, taxonomic keys and literature lists allow for detailed identification and information. Outstanding among the wealth of wonderful illustrations are hitherto unpublished artistic colour paintings by Ernst Haeckel. The beauty of the animals is underlined by the demanding typesetting of the book. This »Atlas« is a unique overview summarizing our knowledge on the world's jellyfish in all their facets. It is of importance not only for scientists worldwide, but also a source of fascination for divers and lovers of marine life. Corresponding to its far-reaching relevance and to the internationality of contributing authors the volume is written in English.

Download or read book Green Fluorescent Protein written by Martin Chalfie and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-11-18 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the gene for green fluorescent protein (GFP), derived from jellyfish, this protein that emits a green glow has initiated a revolution in molecular biosciences. With this tool, it is now possible to visualize nearly any protein of interest in any cell or tissue of any species. Since the publication of the first edition, there have been tremendously significant technological advances, including development of new mutant variants. Proteins are now available in yellow and blue, and Novel Fluorescent Proteins (NFPs) have expanded their utility in developing biosensors, biological markers, and other biological applications. This updated, expanded new edition places emphasis on the rise of NFPs, including new chapters on NFP properties with detailed protocols, applications of GFPs and NFPs in industry research, and biosensors. This book provides a solid theoretical framework, along with detailed, practical guidance on use of GFPs and NFPs with discussion of potential pitfalls. The expert contributors provide real examples in showing how to tailor GFP/NFP to specific systems, maximize expression, and enhance detection.
