Download or read book Asian Development Experience Vol 2 written by Yasutani Shimomura and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2004-01-19 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates the missing link, the complicated realities of the relations between governance and development through case studies of ASEAN countries. Its main objective is to explore a theoretical framework to overcoming the limitations of mainstream approaches by employing case studies on decentralization, crisis management, corporate governance and foreign aid management of both public and private entities. From the beginning of the 1990s onwards, the international aid community has increasingly stressed that good governance, together with democracy and protection of basic human rights, is indispensable for sustainable economic development. The terms, however, are complex, broad, and arguable. They largely refer to discipline of government institutions and the capacity of the public sector. While a wide variety of empirical studies has been done on the relations between good governance and development, it is still unclear how the differences in governance influence development performance in a real world.

Download or read book NGOization written by Aziz Choudry and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and spread of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at local and international levels has attracted considerable interest and attention from policy-makers, development practitioners, academics and activists around the world. But how has this phenomenon impacted on struggles for social and environmental justice? How has it challenged - or reinforced - the forces of capitalism and colonialism? And what political, economic, social and cultural interests does this serve? NGOization - the professionalization and institutionalization of social action - has long been a hotly contested issue in grassroots social movements and communities of resistance. This book pulls together for the first time unique perspectives of social struggles and critically engaged scholars from a wide range of geographical and political contexts to offer insights into the tensions and challenges of the NGO model, while considering the feasibility of alternatives.
Download or read book Gender Work and Tourism written by M Thea Sinclair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Work and Tourism examines the central role played by women in the tourism industry. It discusses the nature of their work and the ways in which tourism creates tensions between the attitude and conduct of tourists and the beliefs and behaviour of local women. Among the areas explored are: the segmentation of tourism work in Northern Cyprus; women's and men's work in Bali and the division of social and political power; gendered tourism work in Mexico and the Philippines; material and ideological changes in sex tourism in South-East Asia and the exploitation of South-East Asian women in Japan.
