Book The Making of the Modern Greek Family

Download or read book The Making of the Modern Greek Family written by Paul Sant Cassia and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1991 study deals with a specific set of institutions in nineteenth-century Athens. Relying on matrimonial contracts, travellers' accounts, memoirs and popular literature, the authors show how distinctive forms of marriage, kinship and property transmission evolved in Athens in the nineteenth century. These forms then became a feature of wider Greek society which continued into the twentieth century. Greece was the first post-colonial modern nation state in Europe whose national identity was created largely by peasants who had migrated to the city. As Athenian society became less agrarian, a new mercantile group superseded and incorporated previous elites and went on to dominate and control the new resources of the nation state. Such groups developed their own, more mobile, systems of property transmission, mostly in response to external pressures of a political and economic character. This is a persuasive piece of detective work which has advanced our knowledge of modern Greece. It is a model for scholarship on the development of family and other 'intimate' ideologies where nation states encroach upon local consciousness.

Book The Social World of Jesus and the Gospels

Download or read book The Social World of Jesus and the Gospels written by Bruce J. Malina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to interpret historical writings, the reader must not employ their modern understanding of the world, but must strive to grasp the mindset of the original audience. To assist the twentieth-century New Testament reader in understanding the literal meaning of the New Testament is the goal of this collection of essays. The Social World of Jesus and the Gospels provides the reader with a set of possible scenarios for reading the New Testament: How did first-century persons think about themselves and others? Did they think Jesus was a charismatic leader? Why did they call God 'father'? Were they concerned with their gender roles? The eight essays in this collection were previously published in books and journals generally not available to many readers. Carefully selected and edited, this collection will be both an introduction and an invaluable source of reference to Bruce Malina's thought.

Book Beyond Alternative Food Networks

Download or read book Beyond Alternative Food Networks written by Cristina Grasseni and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food activism is core to the contemporary study of food - there are numerous foodscapes which exist within the umbrella definition of food activism from farmer's markets, organic food movements to Fair Trade. This highly original book focuses on one key emerging foodscape dominating the Italian alternative food network (AFN) scene: GAS (gruppi di acquisto solidale or solidarity-based purchase groups) and explores the innovative social dynamics underlying these networks and the reasons behind their success. Based on a detailed 'insider' ethnography, this study interprets the principles behind these movements and key themes such as collective buying, relationships with local producers and consumers, financial management, to the everyday political and practical negotiation involving GAS groups. Vitally, the author demonstrates how GAS processes are key to providing survival strategies for small farms, local food chains and sustainable agriculture as a whole. Beyond Alternative Food Networks offers a fresh and engaged approach to this area, demonstrating the capacity for individuals to join organised forms of alternative political ecologies and impact upon their local food systems and practices. These social groups help to create new economic circuits that help promote sustainability, both for the environment and labor practices. Beyond Alternative Food Networks provides original insight and in-depth analysis of the alternative food network now thriving in Italy, and highlights ways such networks become embedded in active citizenship practices, cooperative relationships, and social networks.

Book Reading in Kinship in Urban Society

Download or read book Reading in Kinship in Urban Society written by C. C. Harris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading in Kinship in Urban Society is a collection of articles that deal with family and kinship in urban settlements. It provides comparative ethnographic data and introduces studies and approaches found outside British social inquiry. Organized into four parts, this book first introduces kinship systems and the recognition of relationships in various communities. It then identifies the functions of kinship systems and pays particular attention to inheritance of property. After discussing patterns of mate selection and marital relationships, it turns to the effects of urbanization on family life. This book ends with a discussion about the family life of elderly people. Anthropologists and sociologists studying the relation of kinship to societies will find this book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shadow cast by Pierre Bourdieu's theory is large and well documented, but his early ethnographic work in Algeria is less well known and often overlooked. This volume, the first critical examination of Bourdieu's early fieldwork and its impact on his larger body of social theory, represents an original and much-needed contribution to the field. Its six essays reappraise Bourdieu's original research in light of contemporary processes and make substantial contributions to the ethnography of North Africa. The contributors are scholars of North Africa and France, and each is actively engaged wi.

Book Interlopers of Empire

Download or read book Interlopers of Empire written by Andrew Arsan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the first comprehensive history of the Lebanese migrant communities of colonial French West Africa, a vast expanse that covered present-day Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Guinea, Benin and Mauritania. Where others have concentrated on the commercial activities of these migrants, casting them as archetypal middlemen, this work reconstructs not just their economic strategies, but also their social and political lives. Moreover, it examines the fraught responses of colonial Frenchmen to the unsettling presence of these interlopers of empire--responses which, with their echoes of metropolitan racism, helped to shape the ways in which Lebanese migrants represented themselves and justified their place in West Africa. This is a work which attempts not just to reshape broader understandings of diasporic life-of Janus-like existences lived in transit between distant locales, and de- pendent on the constant to-and-fro of people, news, and goods--but also to challenge the way we think about empires, and the relations between their constituent territories and diverse inhabitants.
