This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Elisabeth Mann Borgese Founder and Honorary President International Ocean Institute Adalberto Vallega has been, for decades, a master and great teacher of integrated coastal management and Mediterranean cooperation. This new book, of an almost en cyclopaedic scope, is a most original contribution to the rapidly growing literature on the subject, of equal value to the academic community which will greatly appreciate the theoretical, historic and philosophical underpinning of the work, and to the practi tioner, the planner, regulator and manager, who will find in these pages most useful "checklists" for his duties and responsibilities. Vallega perceives the need for Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM) in the broader context of the ongoing third industrial revolution, which he calls the trans-industrial stage, in its interaction with climate change. There have been profound changes in the economies of the industrialized coun tries. The development of the new High Technologies, including micro-electronics, genetic engineering, new materials, has accelerated the transition from an economic system based primarily on production to one based very largely on services. This, in turn, has facilitated "globalization" of production systems and services, including the financial system, as well as the migration of people The ongoing global "Great Peo ple's Migration" is, generally, from the hinterland to the coasts where, already today, over 60 percent of the human population resides, exercising unprecedented pressures on the coastal and marine environment. Clearly, this justifies the current emphasis, at global, regional and national levels, on the need for coastal management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean Coastal Pollution focuses on scientific and technical information on the progress of measures and initiatives relative to the control of pollution in the Mediterranean. The book commences by pointing to the Mediterranean Action Plan. Particularly given consideration are the related legislation, the environmental assessment and management components of the plan, and present stage of the plan. The book also discusses the remedies and initiatives that need to be undertaken in the event of marine accidents. The methods to measure the quantity of pollutants in water is also discussed. The text also presents experiments and studies that focus on the control of the effects of hazardous chemicals on coastal waters. Marine studies and research on coastal waters are discussed, and the trends, methodologies, and recommendations are outlined to support the findings. Sewage treatment and proper disposal methods of hazardous substances on coastal waters are also discussed. Comparisons are then made between conventional sewage treatment processes and new processes. The book is a valuable source of data for scholars and readers who are interested in mitigating the effects of pollution on coastal waters.

Download or read book Maritime Issues in the South China Sea written by Nien-Tsu Alfred Hu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South China Sea (SCS) issues are complex and dynamic, ranging from historic claims to present day military occupation, from military security to regional stability, from rhetorical appeasements to national interests, from intraregional competition to extraregional involvement. The submissions made in 2009 by several Southeast Asian states to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) respecting outer limits of extended continental shelves beyond 200 nautical miles in the South China Sea resulted in renewed attention to the maritime disputes over the insular features and the waters of the South China Sea among several claimant States. Questions have resurfaced about the future of cooperation in the region. Furthermore, the improvement of cross-Strait relations between Taiwan and China after 2008 has added a new element to the evolution of South China Sea issues. This book describes these recent developments in depth and provides an examination of possible future developments in the South China Sea. The articles in this book were originally published as special sections in Ocean Development & International Law.
Download or read book Marine Protected Areas Network in the South China Sea written by Vu Hai Dang and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The once pristine and rich marine environment of the South China Sea is degrading at an alarming rate due to the rapid socioeconomic development of the region. Despite this, and due mainly to complicated sovereignty and maritime disputes, coastal States have not been able to develop effective regional cooperation to safeguard the shared marine environment. Marine Protected Areas Network in the South China Sea discusses legal and political measures to support the development of a network of marine protected areas in the South China Sea. Such a network, if properly developed, would not only help to protect the marine environment and resources of the region but also contribute to decreasing the tension among its coastal States. These measures are suggested in accordance with international law, based on the specific geopolitical context of the South China Sea region and take into consideration experiences in developing regional networks of marine protected areas from other marine regions.

Download or read book The Barcelona Convention and Protocols written by Evangelos Raftopoulos and published by Wildy, Simmonds & Hill Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barcelona Convention and Protocols represent the first detailed and co-ordinated effort by UNEP to manage the environmental clean-up and maintenance of a large region. The Convention and Protocols are being implemented through the Mediterranean Action Plan which the author examines in some detail along with the relevant documents and agreements. This book is an important landmark in the study of international environmental law. The Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea Against Pollution, 1976, and its four subsequent Protocols to date is at the heart of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) regional system of co-operation known as the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP). This book presents an authoritative analysis of the MAP as it has evolved over almost two decades and outlines its characteristic features as a model for UNEP's Regional Seas programme. The texts of the Convention and the Protocols are accompanied by a comprehensive collection of related documents which illustrate the major institutional and operational features of a pioneering regional environmental protection regime. Dr Raftopoulos, who is himself a consultant to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), and to MAP, gives an authoritative, first-hand account and evaluation of the achievements of a pioneering and innovative venture in regional co-operation.
