This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Liturgy of the Holy Orthodox Catholic Apostolic Graeco-Russian Church Baptism usually takes place on the eighth day after birth. The child is first exorcised to cast out the evil spirit, anointed with oil, and signed with the sign of the Cross. It is then immersed three times in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Unction with Chrism takes the place of confirmation of the Western Church, and is conferred by a Priest with Ointment consecrated by the Bishop on Thursday in Holy Week. In Russia the ointment can only be consecrated in Moscow or in Kieff. Of the Eucharist, the Longer Catechism says: As to the manner in which the Bread and Wine are changed into the Body and Blood of our Lord, none but God can understand; only this much is signified, that the Bread truly, really and substantially becomes the very true Body of the Lord, and the Wine the very Blood of the Lord.1 The Eucharist is administered to children after Baptism, and adults are expected to communicate four times yearly. Book A Commentary on the Divine Liturgy

Download or read book A Commentary on the Divine Liturgy written by Nicolaus Cabasilas and published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nicholas Cabasilas' Commentary on the Divine Liturgy is a remarkable product of Byzantium's last great flowering of theology. The work has long been essential reading for specialists in the fields of comparative liturgy and history of liturgy, since Cabasilas comments in detail on the Byzantine rite of his day and is able to draw comparisons with the Roman liturgy as well. The work is also invaluable for all those who wish to understand more about the theory and practice of worship in the Orthodox Church. In this edition the text of the Commentary, translated by J. M. Hussey and P. A. McNulty, has been supplemented by a brief foreword which places Cabasilas' work in its historical context. A helpful introduction by R. M. French describes the celebration of the liturgy in the Orthodox Church."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book Blessed Is the Kingdom Now and Forever

Download or read book Blessed Is the Kingdom Now and Forever written by Fr. Stavros N. Akrotirianakis and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pray the Divine Liturgy instead of just watching it. Understand and appreciate the mystery so that the Divine Liturgy becomes more powerful and meaningful for your life. Many Orthodox Christian “witness” the Divine Liturgy without being real participants in it. Perhaps this is why Orthodox Christians are perpetually late or miss the Divine Liturgy altogether. After all, for many, it is just a ritual that will be repeated virtually the same way next week. When we examine each petition and action of the Divine Liturgy, we realize that each one calls us to participate. The word “liturgy” comes from two Greek words: “leitos” (meaning “people”) and “ergon” (meaning “work”). Liturgy literally means “the work of the people” and implies that this is a divine work of all the people. When one comes to worship and truly does the work of the Divine Liturgy, it becomes more than a ritual; it becomes alive. The Divine Liturgy is a parable. To the untrained eye and the unopened heart, it is a ritual involving a man in robes, a choir, altar boys, processions, incense, and candles. But to the one whose heart is open, whose eye is trained, and who yearns to experience God in the Divine Liturgy, the Divine Liturgy opens the gates to the kingdom of heaven and allows the most common of people to enter the kingdom of heaven for a short period each week. Blessed Is the Kingdom, Now and Forever: Reflections on the Divine Liturgy will help the reader understand and appreciate the mystery that unfolds before us each time this service is celebrated. This book will arm you with knowledge on how to pray the Divine Liturgy so that this service will become more powerful and meaningful in your life.
