When complete, the twelve volumes of the series will cover all the Sundays in the three-year lectionary cycle, along with movable occasions, such as Christmas Day, Epiphany, Holy Week, and All Saints' Day. For each lectionary text, preachers will find four brief essays--one each on the theological, pastoral, exegetical, and homiletical challenges of the text. This gives preachers sixteen different approaches to the proclaimation of the Word on any given occasion. The editors and contributors to this series are world-class scholars, pastors, and writers representing a variety of denominations and traditions. And while the twelve volumes of the series will follow the pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary, each volume will contain an index of biblical passages so that nonlectionary preachers, as well as teachers and students, may make use of its contents.

Download or read book The Sufi Message Volume 4 written by Hazrat Inayat Khan and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is rich in both quantity and quality. It offers beautiful insights into the world of the mind in its relation to the body on the one hand, and to the soul on the other. Interestingly, in the conception of Hazrat Inayat Khan, the mind includes the heart: thinking and feeling are not separate. The matter is discussed from three different angles. In the Book of Health Hazrat Inayat Khan presents a picture of health and healing which rises above the controversies between traditional and 'western' professionals. Moreover, it appeals directly to both ordinary man and healers. It sets forth the basic laws governing the divine healing power as well as several methods for its application. Quite another perspective is offered in Mental Purification. This collection of papers deals with the workings and hygiene of the mind and heart. One comes to the understanding of how to "manage" the mind, both for living everyday life and for spiritual development. Rather it implies how leaving the world physically or mentally. Rather it implies how to deal with life and yet keep your balance by proper attunement. The Mind-world expands on this subject matter resulting in a sort of travel guide` through the world of the mind. Although it is highly practical, yet it never substitutes for your own options and decisions. It is like a foundation on which to build your individual life. Sufi Hazrat Inayat Khan (Baroda 1982-Delhi 1927) provides a beautiful guidebook for your inner path. It contains neither prescriptions nor do's and don'ts. You may be provided with insight and understanding which may be as a welcome in the circle of Sufi friends, or as a silent companion on your further way. "The soul is called Atman, which means happiness or bliss itself. It is not that happiness belongs to the soul; it is that the soul itself is happiness." This inspiring book covers almost all aspects of the life of someone who chooses to go the way of self-unfoldment and self-realization. It refers to the struggle of life, its intoxication and its deeper side. The aim, meaning and purpose of life are discussed. What is wanted in life? Essential for the answer to this question are concepts like the art and development of personality, attitude, interest and indifference, purity of life, and the ideal. All these are discussed in separate chapters dealing with these items in an inspiring and uplifting manner, nevertheless remaining realistic as to daily life's requirements. Life is presented as an opportunity to gain experience both within and without, stressing their mutual interdependence. The second half of the book discusses, amongst others, inner life, the kingly road from limitation to perfection, and the stages of his destiny, in the context of the continuity of life. This the fourth volume of the Sufi Message by Hazrat Inayat Khan. It includes three works- the first, Healing is a collection of teachings on spiritual healing. In this work, the Suri mystic discusses the basic laws governing the mind's influence on the body, which he considers greater than that of the physical body on the mental existence, and he emphasises the need for a stronger awareness of the possibilities which spiritual healing can offer. Mental Purification is a collection of lectures on the working and hygiene of the mind in relation to the spirit. This part conveys in a beautiful way the synthesis that can be gained between inner life and life in the world. The volume concludes with the Mind World- which in the terms of the Sufi poets is called 'The palace of Mirrors' - an expression which Inayat Khan takes as symbolising on different levels, the whole of life.

Book Wages Bonuses and Appropriation of Profit in the Financial Industry

Download or read book Wages Bonuses and Appropriation of Profit in the Financial Industry written by Olivier Godechot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2008 financial crisis led the whole world to ask questions of the financial industry. Why are wages in the financial industry so high? Are bonuses responsible for the financial crisis? Where do bonuses come from? Politicians and others urged people to believe that the crisis was the price of Wall Street’s greed and blamed the "bonus culture" prevalent in the financial industry. However, despite widespread condemnation and the threat of tighter regulation, bonuses in the industry have proven remarkably resilient. Wages, Bonuses and Appropriation of Profit in the Financial Industry provides an in-depth inquiry into the bonus system. Drawing on examples from France, the City and Wall Street, it explains how and why workers in the financial industry can receive such large bonuses. The book examines issues around incentives, morality and wealth-sharing among employees, including the rise of "the working rich" – those who have benefited the most from the high wages and large bonuses on offer to some employees. These people have achieved wealth through their work thanks to new forms of exploitation in our ever-more dematerialised economy. This book shows how the most mobile employees holding the most mobile assets can exploit the most immobile stakeholders. In a world where inequalities are rising sharply, this book is therefore an important study of one of the key contemporary issues. It will be of vital interest to those studying finance, banking or political economy.

Book What Can Neuroscience Learn from Contemplative Practices

Download or read book What Can Neuroscience Learn from Contemplative Practices written by Zoran Josipovic and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent wave of brain research has advanced our understanding of the neural mechanisms of conscious states, contents and functions. A host of questions remain to be explored, as shown by lively debates between models of higher vs. lower-order aspects of consciousness, as well as global vs. local models. (Baars 2007; Block, 2009; Dennett and Cohen, 2011; Lau and Rosenthal, 2011). Over some twenty-five centuries the contemplative traditions have also developed explicit descriptions and taxonomies of the mind, to interpret experiences that are often reported in contemplative practices (Radhakrishnan & Moore, 1967; Rinbochay & Naper, 1981). These traditional descriptions sometimes converge on current scientific debates, such as the question of conceptual vs. non-conceptual consciousness; reflexivity or “self-knowing” associated with consciousness; the sense of self and consciousness; and aspects of consciousness that are said to continue during sleep. These real or claimed aspects of consciousness have not been fully integrated into scientific models so far. This Research Topic in Consciousness Research aims to provide a forum for theoretical proposals, new empirical findings, integrative literature reviews, and methodological improvements inspired by meditation-based models. We include a broad array of topics, including but not limited to: replicable findings from a variety of systematic mental practices; changes in brain functioning and organization that can be attributed to such practices; their effects on adaptation and neural plasticity; measurable effects on perception, cognition, affect and self-referential processes. We include contributions that address the question of causal attribution. Many published studies are correlational in nature, because of the inherent difficulty of conducting longitudinal experiments based on a major lifestyle decision, such as the decision to commit to a mental practice over a period of years. We also feature clinical and case studies, integrative syntheses and significant opinion articles.
