Book Trapped in Mediocrity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Katherine Baird
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers
  • Release : 2012-08-09
  • ISBN : 1442215496
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Trapped in Mediocrity written by Katherine Baird and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our students aren’t learning, we’re falling behind other countries, and many of our college graduates are even functionally illiterate. We offer our kids a weak and poorly thought out curriculum; too many teachers do not make good use of classroom time and follow lesson plans that are superficial and repetitive; almost all state governments define “proficiency” at low levels of competency; and because kids with very uneven skills populate a classroom, teachers spend considerable time on review before introducing new material. This dismal picture is tempered by the fact that the hard work and dedication of countless teachers and administrators means that many students get an excellent education. But it doesn’t temper it much. As a group, even our top students are not as strong as are those in a large majority of other rich countries. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Katherine Baird, an economist, starts by clearly spelling out how our educational system is trapped in mediocrity. Yet, she doesn’t just expose where we are. She identifies the steps to get out of the trap. We need to (1) dramatically reform our education’s governance structure, (2) establish high expectations for all students, (3) provide adequate support to meet those expectations, and (4) introduce strong incentives for students to work hard in school so they do their part in meeting higher standards. Clearly, it isn’t as simple as it sounds, but Baird carefully examines each factor that has led to the current state in education and then spells out how a combination of policies will weaken the forces that keep our schools mediocre and instead make them ones worth copying

Book Exemplarity and Mediocrity

Download or read book Exemplarity and Mediocrity written by Paul Fleming and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following Hegel's analysis of art's increasing difficulty to both engage and extricate itself from prosaic reality, Paul Fleming investigates the strategies employed by German literature from 1750 to 1850 for increasingly attuning itself to quotidian life—common heroes, everyday life, non-extraordinary events—while also avoiding all notions of mediocrity. He focuses on three sites of this tension: the average audience (Lessing), the average artist (Goethe and Schiller), and the everyday, or average life (Grillparzer and Stifter). The book's title, Exemplarity and Mediocrity, describes both a disjunctive and a conjunctive relation. Read disjunctively, modern art must display the "exemplary originality" (Kant) that only genius can provide and is thus fundamentally opposed to mediocrity as that which does not stand out or lacks distinctiveness; in the conjunctive sense, modern art turns to non-exceptional life in order to transform it—without forsaking its commonness—thereby producing exemplary forms of mediocrity that both represent the non-exceptional and, insofar as they stand outside the group they represent, are something other than mediocre.

Book Monsieur Mediocre

Download or read book Monsieur Mediocre written by John von Sothen and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious, candid account of what life in France is actually like, from a writer for Vanity Fair and GQ Americans love to love Paris. We buy books about how the French parent, why French women don't get fat, and how to be Parisian wherever you are. While our work hours increase every year, we think longingly of the six weeks of vacation the French enjoy, imagining them at the seaside in stripes with plates of fruits de mer. John von Sothen fell in love with Paris through the stories his mother told of her year spent there as a student. And then, after falling for and marrying a French waitress he met in New York, von Sothen moved to Paris. But fifteen years in, he's finally ready to admit his mother's Paris is mostly a fantasy. In this hilarious and delightful collection of essays, von Sothen walks us through real life in Paris--not only myth-busting our Parisian daydreams but also revealing the inimitable and too often invisible pleasures of family life abroad. Relentlessly funny and full of incisive observations, Monsieur Mediocre is ultimately a love letter to France--to its absurdities, its history, its ideals--but it's a very French love letter: frank, smoky, unsentimental. It is a clear-eyed ode to a beautiful, complex, contradictory country from someone who both eagerly and grudgingly calls it home.

Book Mediocrity in Ten Easy Steps

Download or read book Mediocrity in Ten Easy Steps written by Al Michaud and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediocrity is quite dishonored, unobserved and totally unorganized. This book tries to bring the subject to real life. Based on experience the author hopes to provide benchmarks in the development of people so they can determine and manage their own direction. Readers may use the guideline to move up or, like a happy crab, sideways. Each chapter and subject uses a liberal dose of tongue and cheek to balance actual experiences in guiding the reader. There is constant and tiresome repetition to validate the theme of mediocrity. Readers may be amused, enraged, challenged but hopefully, not bored as they plow through the pile of droppings seeking the pony of truth. Al Michaud was born in North Carolina and graduated from the University of Illinois after a calm spell in the Navy during World War II. Recognizing the difficulty of hitting a moving target, Al moved through several careers with major and minor organizations specializing in real or impending disasters of a large scope. After retiring as a Vice President of Conrail, Al formed a one man consultancy giving ridiculous advice to credulous clients. Now he is enjoying life in a four stoplight town in Western North Carolina and chuckling at the eternal and perpetual repetition of all life’s artifacts. .

  • Author : Brian Byrne
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2020-08-27

  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Disciple Beyond Mediocrity written by Brian Byrne and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disciple. Beyond Mediocrity addresses the problem of mediocrity found in many churches that are locked into the status quo. In this book Dr. Byrne portrays the life of a disciple in strict accordance with what the scriptures teach and as an essential element in the renewal of our faith before the Lord returns At the heart of Dr. Byrne's examination is the question of mediocrity as it has plagued churches and Christians without number. Dr. Byrne exposes the nature of mediocrity and on that foundation builds his study of a disciple whose life can be beyond mediocrity. Dr. Byrne explores the seven characteristics of being a disciple based on the Lord's own words. Denying oneself, taking up his cross, following the Lord, forsaking attachments to all he has, abiding in His word, bearing much fruit, and loving one another. Central to his study of the life of a disciple are the twin spiritual skills; living by faith and living in the Spirit, with the subject that is central to both; being able to hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Dr. Byrne then presents his readers with a step by step instruction on how to live by faith, and includes a memorable parable that reflects his own relationship with the Lord; the Garden of My Heart. The final part of the book takes a leap into the future with Dr. Byrne exploring four events in the life of a disciple in the end of days: being caught up to meet the Lord in the air and being transformed in a brief moment of time into His immortal image; giving account at the judgment seat; the marriage of the bride of Christ with the Lord; and the return of the Lord to the earth, with His transfigured disciples, to reign with Him for a thousand years. The book concludes with an examination of the destiny of the Lord's disciples in the New Jerusalem that descends to the earth at the end of time. There can be no doubt that Dr. Byrne knows what he is writing about. Each chapter bears the distinctive stamp of personal knowledge and experience. This book should be required reading for all Christians, for those who lead churches, and for those who train leaders in colleges and universities round the world.

Book The Depths of Mediocrity

Download or read book The Depths of Mediocrity written by Joe Robert Thornton and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Robert Thornton believes that the opposite of excellence is not failure; it is something worse... mediocrity. He believes that chronic mediocrity is often a symptom of ineffective leadership rather than incapable personnel. Joe Robert Thornton also believes there is another condition just as destructive as mediocrity... indifference. When success is not achieved, there are times when the barrier is something more challenging to detect... apathetic leadership: the do-just-enough-to-get-by leadership. Indifference. Joe Robert Thornton defines indifference is the ethical and moral ability to look away, do nothing... and be okay with it. In The Depths of Mediocrity: Eliminating Indifference, Joe Robert Thornton examines the elements that can be applied in our daily life to avoid mediocrity and indifference. Also, through storytelling, he describes how to turn the negative consequences of mediocrity and indifference into something positive. Mediocrity and indifference are dramatically impacting our world, not just in the space of leadership but in every part of our lives. This book dives deep into both subjects, using current-day issues, and challenges the role of leadership in driving out both mediocrity and indifference. Joe Robert Thornton is taking this approach because he feels it is time for a reality check. As a society, he has observed us careening toward mediocrity and indifference at an alarming rate. He has witnessed mediocrity and indifference accelerating in leaders of all levels, and frankly, he has had enough. "Looking the other way," "taking the high road," and "waiting for this to pass" are just not getting it done. It is time to step forward and call out mediocrity and indifference whenever and wherever we see it. There are real-life situations described in the book that are increasing the stakes of our daily lives. Our collective freefall has been well-documented over the past few years... and topped off by the compounding effect of the recent global pandemic. So, a caution here: This is not a feel-good book. This is also not a self-help book; it is a self-reflection book. Joe Robert Thornton explores the dark side- he wants you to feel something as you read this book. This book is hopeful too. It affirms the amazing things people do every day when mediocrity and indifference are removed. In the space of leadership and success in general- effort and doing a little bit more do matter. At the book's end, Joe Robert Thornton hopes you will be inspired, but he will be more satisfied if you are compelled to act. In this book, you will learn about: * The problems created by mediocrity and indifference * The potentially damaging statement- "I Didn't Know" * The importance of caring more * How comparisons can lead to mediocrity * The relevance of paying attention to details * The power of kindness * The negative impact of blaming * The benefits of overachieving * What going the extra mile really means * The value of effervescent effort If you want to overcome mediocrity and indifference in your life and in your leadership role, this book is for you.
