Download or read book Joseph de Levis and Company written by Charles Avery and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph [also known as Giuseppe] de Levis applied his distinctive signature (be- tween 1577 and 1605) to a whole range of fantastic, Mannerist, bronze artefacts, some 45 in all. They range from large church-bells – some still in situ – and miniature table-bells, to mortars, inkstands, perfume-burners, door-knockers, firedogs, statuettes, and even a portrait-bust. Joseph’s sons and nephews continued the family business into the seventeenth century, signing a similar range of artefacts in an early Baroque style, including two rare mortars that are cast with Hebrew letters and ornament, as well as other intriguing Judaica. Round this core of guaranteed work a corpus of reasonable attributions may be made on stylistic and circumstantial grounds, giving a total of some 140 items. This provides a unique cross-section of the production of a hard-working and resilient renaissance foundry. Frequently inscriptions and coats-of-arms specify Joseph’s wide-ranging clientèle, from civic and church authorities, to guilds and confraternities (all-important in society at the time), nobility, merchants and connoisseur-collectors. Bronzes by the De Levis dynasty are now dispersed among museums in Europe, the USA and Israel, and in Old Master collections, notably that of the late Robert H. Smith, whose foundation purchased in 2002 the eye-catching Ewer from the Salomon de Rothschild Foundation in Paris for £276,000. This well illustrated catalogue raisonné is therefore important both art-historic- ally and from the perspective of the Jewish Diaspora in Renaissance Italy.

The present two volumes complete the catalogue, taking in every piece carved between about 1200 and 1550; and it is satisfying to report that a further volume, on the post-medieval ivories, was published by my colleague Marjorie Trusted in 2013."--Preface, p. 9.
Download or read book Body and Soul written by Andrew Butterfield and published by Edizioni Polistampa. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body and Soul is the catalogue of the exhibition held from 21 October to 19 November 2010 at Moretti Fine Art Gallery - Adam Williams Fine Art Gallery (20 East 80th Street, New York City). The catalogue presents great masterpieces of Italian Renaissance and Baroque sculpture. It was supervised by Andrew Butterfield and Fabrizio Moretti, two of the world's foremost experts of antique trade. The sculptures that the book deeply analyzes all have something in common: they combine ideality and naturalism of form with intensity and depth of expression, so that both the outer appearance and the inner life of the character represented manage to emerge. In short, not even one of these sculptures submitted to the strict academic rules which have always influenced art. They were selected because they celebrate life in every single aspect, both physical and spiritual. Among the artists whose works are here described are Andrea Del Verrocchio, Jacopo Sansovino, Andrea Riccio, Alessandro Algardi, Domenico Pieratti, Giambattista Foggini, Pierre Le Gros, Giuseppe Mazzuoli, Giuseppe Piamontini and Giovachino Fortini. The book includes introductions by Andrew Butterfield, Fabrizio Moretti and Marc Fumaroli as well as in-depth essays by Andrea Bacchi, Andrew Butterfield, C. D. Dickerson, Marc Fumaroli, Giancarlo Gentilini, Tomaso Montanari and Riccardo Spinelli, providing historical and technical information. The volume is rich in colour images and each essay is accompanied by a detailed bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important collections of medieval ivory carvings and small sculpture, available to the public for the first time. This volume, the second catalog of the Wyvern Collection, celebrates an outstanding group of medieval ivory carvings and small sculpture, the finest assemblage of its kind in private hands. The book has pieces from every period of the Middle Ages, including rare pieces from the Early Christian era, spectacular panels from the workshops of tenth-century Constantinople, objects produced by the celebrated carvers active in South Italy in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and several important pieces from the Romanesque period. At the heart of the collection is an outstanding group of Gothic ivories whose highlights include one of the most important secular medieval ivories discovered in recent years. The collection also features a number of small amber, hard stone, jet, wood, and mother-of-pearl carvings. In addition to their virtuoso craftsmanship, many of these pieces have illustrious histories as part of famous aristocratic or ecclesiastical collections. This is a precious opportunity to study these miniature masterpieces.

Download or read book French Gothic Ivories written by Sarah M. Guerin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 1078 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first to consider the golden century of Gothic ivory sculpture (1230-1330) in its material, theological, and artistic contexts. Providing a range of new sources and interpretations, Sarah Guérin charts the progressive development and deepening of material resonances expressed in these small-scale carvings. Guérin traces the journey of ivory tusks, from the intercontinental trade routes that delivered ivory tusks to northern Europe, to the workbenches of specialist artisans in medieval Paris, and, ultimately, the altars and private chapels in which these objects were venerated. She also studies the rich social lives and uses of a diverse range of art works fashioned from ivory, including standalone statuettes, diptychs, tabernacles, and altarpieces. Offering new insights into the resonances that ivory sculpture held for their makers and viewers, Guérin's study contributes to our understanding of the history of materials, craft, and later medieval devotional practices.
