Download or read book Ancient BUDDHIST UNIVERSITIES in Indian Sub Continent written by J. B. Barua and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-07-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book presents a brief account of the great higher learning Buddhist Institutions of Ancient India. Some of those flourished several centuries before the higher learning institutions of the then western world. The reader may have comprehensive ideas of the education imparted in those institutions during the long period of about 2,000 years beginning with the 5th century BC and ending with the 12th century AD. The Universities of ancient India do not connote all the features possessed by the modern Universities of the East and the West of present day. But those Universities of ancient India had also impressive teaching and research program. Many of the teachers of those universities were scholars of very high eminence and repute. In addition, there existed very ideal teacher-student relationship, which has no parallel in the long history of educational thought and practice. This book will enable the reader to compare the present institutions with those of ancient India and realize that the centers of high learning in ancient India were unique in their organization and scholarship during those distant times when elsewhere in the world very few had thought of organized education at the university level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has a rich history worthy of preservation. The number of temples, mosques, tombs, ancient city ruins, palaces and other monuments, is staggering in India. Even today, archeologists are finding ruins of great monuments in remote and not so remote locations. Sadly, various factors such as development, erosion etc. have caused and are causing damage to our ancient heritage. Unplanned expansions of cities, building of new roads and shopping malls and residential areas, unrestricted tourism, all often end up eroding what is left of our archeological heritage. In this book we introduce to the reader some concepts related to preservation of ancient buildings and monuments. We discuss about the archeological survey of India, its history and objectives. We introduce world agreements such as the Venice Charter and Burra charter that relate to the principles for preservation of heritage. Then we go through some of the actual preservation and restoration techniques, showing their application in preserving and restoring some famous monuments and not so famous monuments. It is hoped that this book will provide the interested reader with useful information about the concepts and techniques of preservation.

The notion of transition itself has moved beyond being primarily economic to include dimensions of society, culture and ideology. This volume brings together scholarly works that re-examine and re-define the concept of transition by looking into a range of subjects including religion, culture, gender, caste and community networks, maritime and mercantile modes, ideas of nationalism and historiographies across geographical and temporal settings. With contributions by leading scholars from South Asia, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of ancient history, modern Indian history, sociology and social anthropology, and South Asian studies.
