Book Three Political Tales from Medieval Germany

Download or read book Three Political Tales from Medieval Germany written by Brian Murdoch and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fresh, accurate, and accessible translations of three texts that reveal much about medieval political thought and are surprisingly relevant to the precariousness of present-day political systems. Recent political events around the world, not least January 6, 2021, have shown that political systems long thought to be resilient can be surprisingly at risk. This edition offers an introduction to and prose translations of three texts that demonstrate just how precarious things can be even in a rigidly structured society (here the medieval Holy Roman Empire). The texts, the anonymously authored Duke Ernst, Konrad of Wèurzburg's Henry of Kempten, and Heinrich's Reynard the Fox, are also literary works, designed to entertain. Two of them are adventure stories, but carry a message about the care needed to prevent the escalation of violence; the third is a bleak warning against unscrupulous advisors. As works of literature they are varied. The first moves from recognizable history to develop into an early fantasy novel, as the central character goes boldly to distant places outside the known world and meets, fights with, and learns from strange and alien creatures, before returning to the "real" world. The second, a novella, is ostensibly about chivalric bravery, but it is set in a pre-chivalric period, and shows how (then as now) a trivial incident can escalate towards disaster. The third is an animal fable, part of the extensive tradition of Reynard the Fox, initially familiar, but developing into a violent and dark tale that ends with the death of a king"--

Book German Romance Lanzelet

Download or read book German Romance Lanzelet written by Michael Resler and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2003 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text and facing translation of an important medieval German Arthurian romance. Ulrich von Zatzikhoven's Lanzelet, dating from the end of the twelfth century, is a verse translation into Middle High German of what was probably an Anglo-Norman romance, now lost. It presents the story of Lanzelet (Lancelot), but in quite a different version from Chrétien de Troyes' Chevalier de la charrette. The first half of the tale concerns Lanzelet's knightly and romantic exploits on his way to discovering his true identity, while at the same time winning the beautiful Iblis as his wife. The second half revolves around Lanzelet's efforts to defend the honor of the Arthurian court and reestablish his own and his wife's kingdoms. As in much literature of the time, sex, violence and magic abound. This volume presents the first full translation into English, with a new, facing edition of the Middle High German text. It is accompanied by an introduction, variant readings and notes to the translation. Kathleen J. Meyer teaches in the Department of Languages and Ethnic Studies, Bemidji State University.

Book German Romance VII Ulrich Fuetrer Iban

Download or read book German Romance VII Ulrich Fuetrer Iban written by Ulrich Fuetrer and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2003 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First ever English translation, with facing edition, of an important medieval German Arthurian romance.Composed in the 1480s by the Munich painter and writer Ulrich Fuetrer, Iban is the story of a young knight at King Arthur's court, who pursues adventure abroad, wins a land and its lady as his wife, loses both through his immaturity and negligence, and eventually regains his country and his spouse in a series of adventures that teach him to place the welfare of others above his own desires. A retelling of Hartmann von Aue's Middle High German classic Iwein from circa 1200, itself an adaptation of the Old French writer Chrétien de Troyes' earlier Yvain, the Knight with the Lion, Fuetrer's Iban is one of fifteen narratives making up his massive Arthurian anthology, The Book of Adventures, which the author compiled for Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria-Munich. Among the last premodern retellings of the story of the knight Ywain, Ibanoffers modern readers an invaluable window onto how the most beloved Arthurian tales were reinterpreted at the end of the Middle Ages and at the threshold to the early modern period. This book offers an edition of the romance, the first for nearly a quarter of a century, accompanied by a facing translation, the first into a modern language of any part of the Book of Adventures. It also includes an introduction, putting the romance into its wider contexts, and explanatory notes. were reinterpreted at the end of the Middle Ages and at the threshold to the early modern period. Book An English Translation of Rudolf von Ems s Der guote G rhart

Download or read book An English Translation of Rudolf von Ems s Der guote G rhart written by Albrecht Classen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To expand our understanding of medieval literature in its wider context, there is a desperate need for more translations, since not every text in the Middle Ages was written in Latin, English, or French. Rudolf von Ems’s Der guote Gêrhart (ca. 1220) represents a major contribution to thirteenth-century German romance literature. The present English translation will allow those without knowledge of Middle High German to read and enjoy this significant composition and gain remarkable insights into a literary discourse that was to transform the late medieval canon. Rudolf’s work deserves particular attention because it includes remarkable examples of medieval multilingualism, tolerance, and multiculturality. The poet developed new aesthetic and ethical values, and presented an innovative relationship between a humble yet intelligent and compassionate individual and God by introducing, as his protagonist, a Cologne merchant, who supersedes even the Emperor Otto in his religious devotion, humbleness, and goodness. Finally, Der guote Gêrhart is clearly based on an eleventh-century Jewish narrative by Rabbi Nissim, though we cannot yet explain the lines of transmission from the Judeo-Arabic text to the Middle High German romance.

Book excerpt: Written in 1844 by German physician Heinrich Hoffmann, Slovenly Peter has entertained generations of readers around the world. Intending to buy a picture book as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son, Hoffmann instead wrote and illustrated his own book. In 1845 he was persuaded by friends to publish the book anonymously. It was one of the first uses of chromolitography - a method of making multi-colored prints - in a children's book. For the third edition, published in 1858, new stories and pictures were added and the title was changed to Struwwelpeter, the name of the character in the first story. As a psychiatrist, Hoffmann dressed the most common childhood disorders and misbehavior in entertaining verses and pictures. Stories in verses with colorful pictures were then - long before Wilhelm Busch and the first comics - still completely new. The little book conquered the world in no time and was parodied, imitated and recast with ever new political and cultural messages more often than any other children's book. This bilingual edition shows Hoffmann's original First German Print of 1845, and the version known today in Mark Twains witty translation. as well as the story of Struwwelpeter's creation told by Hoffmann himself. Among the more than a dozen different English translations, Mark Twain's free rendering is certainly the most original, and he is no doubt the most prominent among the many translators into over 100 languages and dialects.

Book Fables Sermonettes and Parables by the Stricker 13th Century German Poet in English Translation

Download or read book Fables Sermonettes and Parables by the Stricker 13th Century German Poet in English Translation written by Stricker and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteenth-century poet who used the pseudonym Der Stricker ("The Knitter) is the earliest known composer of fables, sermonettes, and parables - examples of Kleindichtung -in the German language. Some of the Stricker's fables and parables are, as far as is known, original with him, others are new variants of works that had appeared in other lands and languages. The sermonettes are typical examples of what might be called the folk-theology of the day, drawing on oral tradition rather than directly on the Scriptures. In his verse-tales, the author proves to be a keen, often harsh social critic providing a realistic, often cynical, picture of medieval society that stands in sharp contrast to the romanticism of nearly all German literature of his century. This is the first collection of The Stricker's short narratives in English translation.

Book Fairy Tales from Before Fairy Tales

Download or read book Fairy Tales from Before Fairy Tales written by Jan M. Ziolkowski and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did fairy tales begin? What qualifies as a fairy tale? Is a true fairy tale oral or literary? Or is a fairy tale determined not by style but by content? To answer these and other questions, Jan M. Ziolkowski not only provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical debates about fairy tale origins but includes an extensive discussion of the relationship of the fairy tale to both the written and oral sources. Ziolkowski offers interpretations of a sampling of the tales in order to sketch the complex connections that existed in the Middle Ages between oral folktales and their written equivalents, the variety of uses to which the writers applied the stories, and the diverse relationships between the medieval texts and the expressions of the same tales in the "classic" fairy tale collections of the nineteenth century. In so doing, Ziolkowski explores stories that survive in both versions associated with, on the one hand, such standards of the nineteenth-century fairy tale as the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Carlo Collodi and, on the other, medieval Latin, demonstrating that the literary fairy tale owes a great debt to the Latin literature of the medieval period. Jan M. Ziolkowski is the Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Medieval Latin at Harvard University.
