Book Cherokee Astrology

Download or read book Cherokee Astrology written by Raven Hail and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-01-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explains the ancient astrological system sacred to the Cherokee and how to use it in the modern world • Provides easy-to-use format for determining what signs and numbers rule the day of your birth and what influence they have on your destiny • Includes a traditional Cherokee ephemeris through 2015 An essential aspect of Cherokee religion is the belief that everything on Earth is the reflection of a star. This includes not only people and animals but also trees, rivers, stones, and mountains--all sentient beings to the Cherokee. Astrology has always played a strong role in the Cherokee tradition because of this belief, but unlike our Western system of astrology, Cherokee astrology is based on a 260-day Venus calendar, which includes 20 individual day signs and 13 numbers. It was the task of the Cherokee daykeeper to coordinate this calendar with those of the Sun and the Moon to determine the most auspicious times for ceremonies as well as to understand the star wisdom carried back to Earth by each newborn child. The day sign of a child explains his or her strengths and weaknesses; the number explains the individual’s role in the great cosmic scheme. Raven Hail, an elder of the Cherokee nation, provides insightful descriptions for each of the twenty signs that identify characteristics of those born under a particular day sign and gives the meanings of the thirteen numbers that determine the significance of that sign in the larger scheme of life. The author has translated the traditional Cherokee ephemeris into an easy-to-use format that allows readers to quickly determine which sign rules the day of their birth and which number has influence over it.

Book The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees

Download or read book The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees written by James Mooney and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEVELOPED OVER MANY CENTURIES and in many cultures, traditions based on medicinal plants and calls to the spiritual world were applied by so-called "medicine men" to address the challenges of daily life. Passed orally from generation to generation, shaman to shaman, these secret formulas were kept alive. From only one Native American culture do we have an accurate record of these chants, medicines, and methods. Among all the tribes within the present bounds of the United States, only the Cherokees had acquired a written language. By 1821 its creator, the legendary Sequoyah had created unique characters to capture the vocal sounds of Cherokee speech. Cherokee shamans were quick to take advantage of this wonderful new tool. No longer would they be forced to rely on memory alone. When James Mooney, author of this text, began his research on the Cherokee reservation of North Carolina, many of the Cherokee documents were decades old. Building a relationship with certain shamans he secured permission to record their formulas for posterity-with the caveat that he would not reveal their individual secrets to other shamans. With their cooperation, he was able to give us remarkable insight into an important element of Native American life, an element that included not only the Native American approach to treat illness and wounds but also to influence battles, romances, games, and more.

Download or read book The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees Illustrated written by James Mooney and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The sacred formulas here given are selected from a collection of about six hundred, obtained on the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina in 1887 and 1888, and covering every subject pertaining to the daily life and thought of the Indian, including medicine, love, hunting, fishing, war, self-protection, destruction of enemies, witchcraft, the crops, the council, the ball play, etc., and, in fact, embodying almost the whole of the ancient religion of the Cherokees. The original manuscripts, now in the possession of the Bureau of Ethnology, were written by the shamans of the tribe, for their own use, in the Cherokee characters invented by Sikwâ´ya (Sequoyah) in 1821, and were obtained, with the explanations, either from the writers themselves or from their surviving relatives.

Book American Indian Medicine

Download or read book American Indian Medicine written by Virgil J. Vogel and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book, says the author, is to show the effect of Indian medicinal practices on white civilization. Actually it achieves far more. It discusses Indian theories of disease and methods of combating disease and even goes into the question of which diseases were indigenous and which were brought to the Indian by the white man. It also lists Indian drugs that have won acceptance in the Pharmacopeia of the United States and the National Formulary. The influence of American Indian healing arts on the medicine and healing and pharmacology of the white man was considerable. For example, such drugs as insulin and penicillin were anticipated in rudimentary form by the aborigines. Coca leaves were used as narcotics by Peruvian Indians hundreds of years before Carl Koller first used cocaine as a local anesthetic in 1884. All together, about 170 medicines, mostly botanical, were contributed to the official compendia by Indians north of the Rio Grande, about 50 more coming from natives of the Latin-American and Caribbean regions. Impressions and attitudes of early explorers, settlers, physicians, botanists, and others regarding Indian curative practices are reported by geographical regions, with British, French, and Spanish colonies and the young United States separately treated. Indian theories of disease—sorcery, taboo violation, spirit intrusion, soul loss, unfulfilled dreams and desires, and so on -and shamanistic practices used to combat them are described. Methods of treating all kinds of injuries-from fractures to snakebite-and even surgery are included. The influence of Indian healing lore upon folk or domestic medicine, as well as on the "Indian doctors" and patent medicines, are discussed. For the convenience of the reader, an index of botanical names is provided, together with a wide variety of illustrations. The disproportionate attention that has been given to the superstitious and unscientific features of aboriginal medicine has tended to obscure its real contributions to American civilization.

Book The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees

Download or read book The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees written by James Mooney and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sacred formulas here given are selected from a collection of about six hundred, obtained on the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina in 1887 and 1888, and covering every subject pertaining to the daily life and thought of the Indian, including medicine, love, hunting, fishing, war, self-protection, destruction of enemies, witchcraft, the crops, the council, the ball play, etc., and, in fact, embodying almost the whole of the ancient religion of the Cherokees. The original manuscripts, now in the possession of the Bureau of Ethnology, were written by the shamans of the tribe, for their own use, in the Cherokee characters invented by Sikwaya (Sequoyah) in 1821, and were obtained, with the explanations, either from the writers themselves or from their surviving relatives. Some of these manuscripts are known to be at least thirty years old, and many are probably older. The medical formulas of all kinds constitute perhaps one-half of the whole number, while the love charms come next in number, closely followed by the songs and prayers used in hunting and fishing. The great number of love charms will doubtless be a surprise to those who have been educated in the old theory that the Indian is insensible to the attractions of woman. The comparatively small number of war formulas is explained by the fact that the last war in which the Cherokees, as a tribe, were engaged on their own account, closed with the Revolutionary period, so that these things were well nigh forgotten before the invention of the alphabet, a generation later. The Cherokees who engaged in the Creek war and the late American civil war fought in the interests of the whites, and their leaders were subordinated to white officers, hence there was not the same opportunity for the exercise of shamanistic rites that there would have been had Indians alone been concerned. The prayers for hunting, fishing, and the ball play being in more constant demand, have been better preserved.
