Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medicinal Plants, Vol. 2 of 4: Being Descriptions With Original Figures of the Principal Plants Employed in Medicine and an Account of the Characters, Properties, and Uses of Their Parts and Products of Medicinal Value; Nos. 70-146, Leguminosae to Valerianaceae Habitat - This familiar and beautiful shrub is very common throughout this country on heaths and open places, and in woods, often growing in great quantity and forming a marked feature in the vegetation of many sandy districts, especially noticeable in May and June when covered with its brilliant scented flowers. It is found in equal abundance throughout Western Europe, but becomes rare in the central and eastern parts, and in the Mediterranean countries. It, however, occurs in Italy and in Central and Southern Russia, extending even into Siberia. The five prominent wing-like angles which give so striking a character to the young twigs are remarkably persistent, and can be traced on the very oldest stems; as the stem increases in thickness they become of course more widely separated, and at length appear as distant arching ridges, the summit of each arch marking the point of attachment of a leaf. Book Ethnopharmacology of Medicinal Plants

Download or read book Ethnopharmacology of Medicinal Plants written by Christophe Wiart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1860, Oliver Wendell Holmes pointedly expressed himself to the Massachusetts Medical Society: “I firmly believe that if the whole Material Medica, as now used, could be sunk to the bottom of the sea, it would be all the better for mankind, and all the worst for the fishes.” Should one think the same about the current approach in drug discovery from plants? Probably yes. Despite the spending of billions of US dollars, and three decades of efforts, high-throughput screenings have only allowed the discovery of a couple of drugs. One could have reasonably expected the discovery of an arsenal of drugs from the millions of plant extracts randomly tested, but “hits” can be inactive in vitro or too toxic, some molecules need to be metabolized first to be active, and false-positive and false-negative results are common. The bitter truth is that the robotic approach in discovering drugs from plants has proven, to date, its inability to excavate the hundreds of molecules that will contribute to the health progress of Man. However, one can reasonably see that the last patches of primary rainforest on earth hold still hundreds of spectacularly active drugs that await discovery.

Book Medicinal Plants of Central Asia Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan

Download or read book Medicinal Plants of Central Asia Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan written by Sasha W. Eisenman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book is a collaborative effort between researchers at Rutgers University and colleagues from numerous institutions in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. It will be the first book to document more than 200 of the most important medicinal plants of Central Asia, many whose medicinal uses and activities are being described in English for the first time. The majority of the plants described grow wild in Central Asia with some being endemic, while other species have been introduced to Central Asia but are commonly used in regional plant based medicine. The book contains four introductory chapters. The first and second chapters cover the geography, climate and vegetation of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, respectively. The third chapter provides a brief history of medicinal plant use and science in Central Asia and the fourth chapter contains general information about phytochemistry. The fifth chapter comprises the bulk of the book and covers 208 medicinal plant species. Nearly all species have one or more high quality, color photographs. Three useful appendices have been included. The first is a glossary of botanical and ecological terms, the second is a glossary of chemistry terms and the third is a glossary of medical terms. During the preparation of this manuscript we found there to be a deficiency in quality reference resources for the translation of many of the technical terms associated with the different branches of science covered in this book. In order to make our job easier we compiled glossaries over the course of preparing the manuscript and have included them feeling that they will be an extremely valuable resource for readers.
