Book Medicinal Fatty Acids in Inflammation

Download or read book Medicinal Fatty Acids in Inflammation written by J. Kremer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Progress in Inflammation Research is a unique compilation of work performed by a wide spectrum of investigators from different medical disciplines. It is fascinating that dietary alterations of fatty acid intake can result in a range of salutory changes in a great variety of medical conditions. Most of the good scien tific work which has led to these observations has been performed over just the last two decades. This is of course not a very long time in the context of the history of the human species. Recently performed analysis of fat intake from paleolithic times has indicated that our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed as much cholesterol as modern Western man, but strikingly less saturated fatty acid and more polyunsatu rates, including n-3 fatty acids. Wild game has the terrestrial source of n-3 incorpo rated in its fat since browsing animals derive 18:3n-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) natural ly from leafy plants. There is, however, little opportunity for modern Western man to get n-3 fatty acids from the diet if one does not consume fish. Modern agribusiness provides ani mal feeds high in n-6 fatty acids, mostly derived from linoleic acid (18:2n-6) in corn feed. Therefore, grazing animals have no access to alternative fatty acids in either feed or grasses, the latter containing little or none of these potentially beneficial highly polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Download or read book Lipids in Health and Disease written by Peter Quinn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lipids are functionally versatile molecules. They have evolved from relatively simple hydrocarbons that serve as depot storages of metabolites and barriers to the permeation of solutes into complex compounds that perform a variety of signalling functions in higher organisms. This volume is devoted to the polar lipids and their constituents. We have omitted the neutral lipids like fats and oils because their function is generally to act as deposits of metabolizable substrates. The sterols are also outside the scope of the present volume and the reader is referred to volume 28 of this series which is the subject of cholesterol. The polar lipids are comprised of fatty acids attached to either glycerol or sphingosine. The fatty acids themselves constitute an important reservoir of substrates for conversion into families of signalling and modulating molecules including the eicosanoids amongst which are the prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leucotrienes. The way fatty acid metabolism is regulated in the liver and how fatty acids are desaturated are subjects considered in the first part of this volume. This section also deals with the modulation of protein function and inflammation by unsaturated fatty acids and their derivatives. New insights into the role of fatty acid synthesis and eicosenoid function in tumour progression and metastasis are presented.

Book Anti inflammatory Bio activities in Fatty acid Fractions of a Lebanese Medicinal Plant

Download or read book Anti inflammatory Bio activities in Fatty acid Fractions of a Lebanese Medicinal Plant written by Sabreen Faraj Fostok and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of dietary fatty acid (FA) composition in modulating inflammation has b een extensively studied. However, studies were limited to food-derived FAs, rath er than those reported to occur in certain plants, such as members of the Ranunc ulaceae family. The purpose of this study is to investigate potential anti-infla mmatory bio-activities in Ranunculus constantinopolitanus (MP), traditionally us ed in Lebanese folk medicine for the treatment of fungal infections, to compare such activities to those of fish oil and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), via in- vitro and in-vivo models of inflammation, and to identify the bio-active molecul es underlying these activities. The endotoxin (ET)-stimulated mouse mammary epit helial SCp2 cells were utilized to assess the effect of MP on inflammation marke rs in-vitro. Wild MPI. 2 (wMPI. 2), the chloroform fraction derived from the crude methanol extract of the wild plant, in addition to wild Y2+3 (wY2+3), a FA mix isolated from this fraction and containing palmitic acid, C18:2 and C18:1, presu med to be linoleic and oleic acid, respectively, and stearic acid (1:5:8:1 ratio), reduced ET-induced interleukin (IL)-6 levels, as shown by Enzyme-Linked Immun oSorbent Assay (ELISA), without affecting cell viability or morphology. Our stud y also demonstrates that the observed effect of wY2+3 was not due to any of its individual FA constituents. Furthermore, Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (E MSA) showed that the reduction in IL-6 levels was due to an upstream inhibition of ET-induced nuclear factor-KB (NF-KB) DNA-binding activity by wY2+3. However, wY2+3 did not reduce the activities of ET-induced or serum-derived gelatinase A and B, as monitored by zymography. When compared to fish oil, CLA and an analogo us synthetic FA mix, wY2+3 exhibited higher potency in reducing ET-induced IL-6 levels, both at lower effective concentrations and within a shorter period of ti me. Similar effects to those of wY2+3 were noted in cultivated Y2+3 (cY2+3), tha t showed similarities in their infrared (IR) spectra. cY2+3 did not reverse infl ammation in-vivo. A single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of rats with cY2+3 a t 12 mg/kg was not enough to reduce ET-induced paw edema. Taken together, our st udies demonstrate the existence of anti-inflammatory bio-activities in MP, and a ttribute them to a FA ...

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Bioactive Lipids written by A Nicolaou and published by Oily Press. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bioactive lipids, Anna Nicolaou and George Kokotos have brought together an international team of authors to discuss the nomenclature, structures, biochemistry, pharmacology and recent developments in the main classes of bioactive lipids. These lipids are essential components of the cell membrane and play many dynamic roles in mediating and controlling a wide array of cellular activities including membrane structure and organization, metabolic and gene regulation, protein structure and function, energy production, and signalling pathways. The lipid interests of scientists in the pharmaceutical and food industries are converging as the broader significance of bioactive lipids is increasingly recognized. Lipids and lipid-metabolizing enzymes are targeted for the development of new drugs. Meanwhile, functional foods, nutraceuticals and supplements already have lipids as major active ingredients. The food industry will progress from simply using lipids as ingredients, to the formulation of products that influence the synthesis, metabolism and effects of bioactive lipids in the body. These advances in applied lipid biochemistry will build on the fundamental research of lipid scientists in universities worldwide, such as those scientists contributing to Bioactive lipids.

Book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field

Download or read book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-13 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every aspect of immune function and host defense is dependent upon a proper supply and balance of nutrients. Severe malnutrition can cause significant alteration in immune response, but even subclinical deficits may be associated with an impaired immune response, and an increased risk of infection. Infectious diseases have accounted for more off-duty days during major wars than combat wounds or nonbattle injuries. Combined stressors may reduce the normal ability of soldiers to resist pathogens, increase their susceptibility to biological warfare agents, and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines intended to protect them. There is also a concern with the inappropriate use of dietary supplements. This book, one of a series, examines the impact of various types of stressors and the role of specific dietary nutrients in maintaining immune function of military personnel in the field. It reviews the impact of compromised nutrition status on immune function; the interaction of health, exercise, and stress (both physical and psychological) in immune function; and the role of nutritional supplements and newer biotechnology methods reported to enhance immune function. The first part of the book contains the committee's workshop summary and evaluation of ongoing research by Army scientists on immune status in special forces troops, responses to the Army's questions, conclusions, and recommendations. The rest of the book contains papers contributed by workshop speakers, grouped under such broad topics as an introduction to what is known about immune function, the assessment of immune function, the effect of nutrition, and the relation between the many and varied stresses encountered by military personnel and their effect on health.
